- Tom Cole | May 12, 2017 - After four chords, the notes start to fly - Danilo Brito and his four collaborators, three Brazilians and one American, are off like jackrabbits in front of a hound, having hustled their instruments to the Tiny Desk at the end of a North American tour.
Brito a 32-year-old mandolin player, made his first record when he was a teenager, plays a type of music called choro (pronounced "shore-oo").
It's said that choro started in the streets and back yards and made its way to the concert hall. Brazilian musicians of all genres have drawn on choro, from popular composer Antonio Carlos Jobim to Heitor Villa Lobos, one of the giants of Latin American classical music. Its literal translation from the Portuguese is "to cry," but in Brito's dextrous hands a better translation may be "crying out to be heard."
You can hear Brito and his colleagues play their arrangement of Villa Lobos' "Melodia Sentimental," originally written for voice and orchestra, behind the Tiny Desk, but what you're actually hearing is a kind of formal Rodas de Choro, the circles of players who developed this music more than a century ago and have carried it on to the present.
Only - in the backyards, they don't wear suits and ties.

Thank you Tiny Desk for introducing me to this artist, I finally know the name of the genre I've loved for all these years: choro!!
Brazilian mandolinist are probably some of the most underatted players in the world. Like Hamilton de Holanda and this guy are probably some of the best mandolin players in the world
True
Temos muitos bandolinistas desse nível aqui no Brasil, atualmente eu escuto muito a Elisa Meyer Ferreira do Choro das Três (Grupo musical de Choro). Além de grande bandolinista é também uma grande compositora.
[We have many mandolinists of this level here in Brazil, currently I listen a lot to Elisa Meyer Ferreira from Choro das Três (Choro musical group). In addition to being a great mandolinist, she is also a great composer.]
Hamilton de Holanda created the 10 chords Bandolim. He became a perfect player studying music at university of Brasilia and practicing on Jam Sessions ("roda de choro" in portuguese)
Fun fact: the interpreter is Brito's wife, Maria Silvia. The Waltz "Tica" is dedicated to her (Tica is a pet name Brito gave her) ❤️
Que fofo! I had no idea it was her
Chorinho, definitivamente é a cara do Brasil. Coisa linda de se ouvir!
I have never seen someone that happy on a bike.
welcome to brazil, beside the problems we will always find something to laugh and be happy about

You know when someone is from Brazil, when they smile from simple things, Danilo is amazing! Viva Brasil!

I have been searching for these artists and didn't even know it! A couple dozen strings and amazing hands and they transform the little NPR studio into the streets of São Paulo or Rio.

Brian Rice to his mom in 7th grade, "But, Mom, I WANT to be a professional tambourine player, why can't I be?" and then he ran off to join a Brazilian traveling choro band, and the rest is history.. he's great! His Momma is proud!
hahaha Professional tambourine (pandeiro) players are very common in Brazil.
The guy in middle playing mandolin looks so in love with his music. Beautiful thing to see.
His mandolin as my eternal soundtrack is all I ever wish for.

Thanks, NPR for expanding our cultural horizons with this extraordinary group . They are amazingly proficient and disciplined musicians bringing us some wonderful music from far away and long ago. George Lewis, Sr.

I like the combination of suit and no socks :-D

This is literally what I listen to in my car and the baby loves it 💗
This reminds me to the wonderful musician Hamilton de Holanda. I love it!
Unspeakably beautiful
I saw these guys play at the Savannah Music Festival. They were freaking amazing!
Incredible! Undoubtedly the most difficult musical genre in the world!! In addition to a complex technique and a huge vocabulary of chords, it still has the Brazilian "swing" in its definitive essence!!
How can you not groove to this? Beautiful
Você é fantástico, saudações incríveis e sentimentos cheios da Grécia

These people and Chris Thile need to be put in the same room for a couple hours with some mics and cameras.
that would be amazing
lol at a certain point Tiny Desk is gonna be "the Chris Thile show"
I have no problem with that.
wow can you iamgine that!! it puts a smile on my face! such a fantastic combination, no, a legendary combination!
I have been thinking all day for the most appropriate response to this Tiny Desk Concert...but , before that, I must show my respect to NPR music for being so open-minded. I appreciate the efforts that you make in presenting to the CZcams community an interesting variety of dedicated musicians- virtuosos in their genre of music.
This results into showing small windows of today's cultures but at the same big balconies of today's humble cultures.
I personally enjoy this Tiny Desk Concert for that same reason. Mr. Tom Cole vey well pointed out that the mandolin "cries out to be heard". To my ears, its chords cry out for our sorrows and joys of our "every day life". I especially want to point out this phrase because it is the sum of our feelings, fortunes and misfortunes throughout out daily lives that create genres such as choro. Among the melodies and harmonies are entangled wishes and determination of managing life with all it up's and down's. All musicians have their own little space in the spectrum of music and each space says a little story. My wish is that, if my life, my own humble story, were to be interpreted with music, it should be played by a mandolin.
Well, thank you!
Well said but I prefer by a sax
Beautiful idea!
This transported me someplace amazing. Thank you. My mouth hung open for half of it, my eyes teared up for the other half.
you may will want to listen Pixinguinha. He's is the father of this genre.
"Choro" means "cry" in portuguese... its a very accurate name in my opinion :) btw the third song means
"Sentimental Melody" in portuguese wich is another precise naming for such a moving music.
Lindo demais, gurizada!! A música brasileira não poderia estar melhor representada!!
Wonderful to see and hear this! Watched (and listened) to it twice.
Que coisa mais maravilhosa, meu amigo! Extremamente revigorante ouvir sua música. Muito obrigado

Very Good Performance
Excelente, muito obrigado Danilo Brito!!
BRASILLLLLLLLL!
Lindíssimo! Parabéns.
Representaram! Vai, Brasil!
That dude in the back is playing a 7 string guitar! I had to pause to double check. As if he wasn't badass enough already.
Regi, Yes he is and he plays those base strings in counter point to the 6 string guitar. Incredible chording and rapid fills. Amazing stuff.
The 7 string guitar is tradicional in Choro. Since the beggining of the XX century it has been used as a accompaniment instrument in Choro and Samba to create counterpoint basslines. Usually it had steel strings.
In the 80's, the great guitarrist Raphael Rabello started to use a nylon string 7 string guitar as soloist instrument, creating a "new school" that has been followed by musicians like Yamandu Costa, Alessandro Penezzi and many others.
@@Music_RTV that is so cool.
Nossa que lindo! 🤗
Obrigada pela linda manhã! 😌🎶
