  • We are a family of Full-Time RVers living in a fifth wheel. Having a 40' fifth wheel, we needed a big truck for the job. During our first year of travel, we had a 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty Dually. This year, we upgraded to the 2021 Ford F-450 Super Duty 4x4 Dually. This video gives a review after 4 months of pulling and driving with the F450. It also compares some of the differences between the F-350 Dually and the F-450. Watch this video to see how we like the F-450 and we hope it helps you determine if the F-450 or the F-350 is better for you.

    Good video. We are truck campers. We have had all three 350/450 and now F550. We have. We have been through many sets of tires over the years and every imaginable combination of airbags, leafs, etc. the last two sets have been Michelin XDS2. Goodyears wear too fast and have the harsh ride you are talking about. Toyos have a little better ride, wear well, and do not track grooves in the road as bad as Goodyear’s. But the Toyos are near impossible to keep balanced. It took us four shops to even get them initially balanced. The Michelin’s are near perfect. They balance easy, do not track grooves at all it seems, are the quietest as the miles increase. They wear nearly as good as The Toyos and provide a much smoother ride. It is never going to ride as smooth as an F350, but the Michelin’s are as close as you are going to get. Another hint, for the best overall ride, lower all pressures to 80-85. Your Tpms will show you that they will increase to 100-105 anyway as the ambient temps increase. That seems to be our sweet spot for a decent ride and high capacity on our F550. (That’s with 7000 lbs of truck camper and gear in the bed). Good luck. You can make it ride better. I’m with some of the other guys who responded, I’d take the turning radius over the ride anyway, it with our tires we have both.

    F350 vs F450 for me is a question that engineers ask - "what is the duty cycle"? A F450 is engineered to have a 100% uptime duty cycle - brakes, axles, tires,.. I keep mine at max payload 80% of the time therefore F450 for me. If not pushing max at full time duty cycles then F350 makes more sense.

      If you are not a full time traveler, maybe the ride isn't as noticeable. We have adjusted the tire pressure which has helped marginally. Recently the turning radius on the F450 has gotten us out of a couple jams - that's about 4 times we needed the radius. Jury is still mixed I am afraid. I have a nearly identical setup: 2019 F450 / B&W hitch / Rock Tamers / Garmin RV / Tireminder / Pulling a 2022 Montana 5th Wheel 1-1/2 bath with Disk Brakes. Great Review! My only thing would be to add that the 19.5 truck tires last considerably longer than LT tires, and are regroovable, and can be retreaded, and the brakes on a F350 and F250 are the same, but the F450 brakes are larger.

      I'm on the fence about the F350/F450 myself. The larger brakes would be great to have but here is my dilemma. If the trailer has disc brakes (I can't speak on drum setups) and is set up correctly, there shouldn't be any difference in stopping distance for the truck (in my mind at least). The truck brakes stop the truck and the trailer brakes stop the trailer.... right?

    You have a Beautiful Truck… The upper trims: Platinum & Limited Seats are more comfortable in 450 than Lariat Trim.
    Moving to Michelin’s and retaining 19.5 commercial grade but moving up from stock 225 size, increasing height with 245 or 265 series… provides smoother ride and reduces final gear for little better mileage, calibrate tire / speedo with ForScan. My opinion, fills out fender wells great, rides smoother & tracks highway grooves better than F350 stock tires while retaining tighter F450 steering and all the other F450 HD benefits. Weight limits are Derated especially with F450 to remain within Class A rating… actual "Design" weight limits of F450 are much higher than F350; if payload exceeds Class A 14k limit the F450 handles it so much better than F350… as many F450 Owners often already do with large & loaded 5th Wheel Toy Haulers unknowingly or unconcerned intentionally.
    Before you go back to F350, try little taller tires in better Brand… improvement may surprise ya!

    Just went back to a F350 (22 model) traded my 2019 F450. I loved my 450 but you give up economy, ride quality, payload and you pay more for insurance. I am 4mpg+ better off already with less than 1000 miles on my 22. The better economy you speak of in this video is not much I was getting average of 13.8mpg-13.9mpg with my 6 speed F450 unloaded and around 10 loaded hauling my Momentum triple axle. The 450 has larger brakes & better turning, it is great to have but not a deal killer for me now. So, you're saying that a trailer loaded with lots of weight to the front, a family of five adults in the truck, a heavy hitch + lots of tools in the truck that causes the payload weight to exceed the truck's limit is impossible? I bet the insurance company would ask that question after a crash. I think it's an EXCELLENT question and 100% a portion of the safe towing formula.

    • @BrightDaisAhead
      @BrightDaisAhead  Před 2 lety

    • @kevinrcoffman
      @kevinrcoffman Před 2 lety +1

      You're very wrong Chris. People who pull 5th wheel campers absolutely need to mind their truck's cargo capacity. The weight of the trailer pushing down on the rear axle + occupants weight + total amount stuff they're carrying with them needs to be taken into account. If you're pulling a heavy load and get into an accident, the insurance company will ask about how it was loaded, and God help you if someone got injured! Ignorance is NOT bliss.

  • @dr.michaelbennett8597

    If you are that guy who is a “spec guy” who built stereo systems based on the best of breed components, you are already disqualified as you were WRONG! Then and now. The F-450 is a different (higher) class truck than the F-350. The navigation system is a zero difference and should have never been mentioned as a difference. This video is completely ignorant and dumb. The TPMS is not available in 19.5. The truck itself is no comparison. Engine and transmission are the same, after that STOP! Most of this video is irrelevant in terms of comparison between F-450 and F-350.
