No doubt the composition is amazing, but considering that it's all pre-recorded and he's just picking and choosing what to play (Ie he could hit a button, step back and the song would be 100% fine w/out him touching anything) I give him a "meh" at best. It's more for show than it is for music.

those are custom made midi controllers with a lighting system. there's a video on youtube where he talks about how he built them. really cool stuff. i wish i could go back 10 years and gone to more of their live shows. miss them and love them
They sound good but i can name over 5 bands that sound almost exactly like them and byork being one of them so they arent sounding very orginal to me but they do sound good
I too hear how they can be compared to Bjork. This song in particular sounds similar to her songs Hyperballad, Joga, Hunter, and Hidden Place. Other bands that sound like Purity Ring are CHVRCHES, Phantogram, Sneaker Pimps, Bjork, Trifonic, Portishead, to name a few.
+11cylynt11 maybe Bjork's latest effort with Arca might sound a tiny bit like them, but i think phantogram is the only act to come close to their specific sound imo
+Euan Connor If you've listen to Bjork over the years you can probably hear the occasional similarities in singing style. It's not a constant or anything like that, just every so often, especially when she's talking in a lower tone and not singing, she sounds a bit like Bjork. You can really hear it in Begin Again. Nothing negative about it, Bjork is incredible and one of the original singers to change the stylistic way people heard music. To have those hints only makes people like them more.
I really with they would do more live instrumentation. His drum sticks don't appear to be linked to actual sample pads, it's just the lighting effect. They are both extremely talented and I'd like to see them actually play something instead of just singing over a base track. They have the talent! Just do it instead of turning a high pass filter dial. Don't get me wrong, love them and listen to each album daily (literally) , just don't try and pull the wool over people's eyes.
+liamvg He's explained the drums in an interview. The light posts are pressure sensing, and generates a midi sample when hit. It's not different to an electronic drumset. He wanted there to be light so that there is some more immersion than just watching someone play electronic samples. But I agree with you, I hope they do acoustic versions of their songs that have no electronics at all. That would be a pretty awesome thing to hear live.
Her vocals are run through his machine and he manipulates them at will. She doesn't even know what he is going to do and many times it will change from one performance to another. You can watch any live clip of theirs and see what I mean. In fact the reason I watched this one clip was just to see what he did with her vocals on this song.
