Lots of sound advice there. Been blowing lead in big bands for 30 years. Always good to hear someone else's perspective. Even better when it's mostly the same advice I'd give. There's a world of difference between playing lead and just playing 1st...

Bass player here, but these types of videos make me jealous of horn players who get to play in a section of their own instrument. Love the content, and jazz trombone should get more love!

I feel similarly about always wanting to be a rhythm section player. It seems like there are a lot more opportunities to make musical choices that impact the entire performance in the rhythm section versus me being one lowly trombone player. The grass is always greener I guess, haha.

I played lead trombone in the 80s. You can't compete with the trumpets. 😂

Would you recommend practicing with the metronome on 2 and 4?

I like to play with the metronome clicking on all 4 beats or on 1 and 3 if the tempo is fast. I think it mostly comes down to personal preference. I'm not sure that either way is necessarily "right" or "wrong".

Shawn - do you have a specific computer program that can generate the multi-not drone you are demonstrating. I've used CZcams drones before but the only ones I've seen just do one note.

Hey Jamie, this example was with a synth that is part of my recording software (studio one); however, when I use this approach in my practice I use an app on my phone called tonal energy. It is a tuner app that has a lot of features, one which allows you to set a drone to any selected notes. The app does cost a couple of dollars, but the drone feature alone is worth it in my opinion.
