    In China there is often a misunderstanding that "Chinese dialects with more tones are inheriting more traits from its ancestral language." In fact, Chinese likely started having tones not later than 3000 years ago. One motivation that made Chinese become tonal is the single-syllablization. Nowadays, almost all Chinese dialects have at least two tones (some in the North Western China may have 3 tones or fewer.)
