    I just finished making a round punch out of one inch S7 and I would have been lost without my power hammer. A slitting chisel is next on the list thanks for the video.

    Nice. I have yet to do anything with the H13 I was given. It's.. Huge tho.. It's 2 inch round stock that is 2 feet long.. So a VERY pricey piece of steel, and I have been quite leary of doing anything with it. I know it's properties, and I know it will he a nightmare to beat tooling out of by hand, but as far as I know it's about the best tool steel for a blacksmith. No need to re temper it really, no need to quench the tool, and as you demonstrated its harder than most things you would work even when the tool is cherry red.

    I was looking to make myself some punches, and this video was very informative. Thank you!

  • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead

    Roy thank you. I do enjoy seeing the power hammer in action from time to time.

    Yes H13 is tough stuff! For 16+ yrs I ran a forge press punching out high silicon based aluminum piston blanks! That type of aluminium is very abrasive and was really strange that what one would think was very soft material would eventually wear away H13 ! Any other tool die steel would be literally eaten alive! The aluminum alloy was 4032

    H13 is really tuff stuff!!!! Danial Moss gave me a chunk to make something out of. Lol i'm still working on getting it out of round. Lmao Thanks Roy. ⚒ On!!!!!

    Last week I made a slot chisel out of a spring from a train car. I figured the flexibility of the steel would keep the thin blare from snapping yet hard enough at the cutting edge to do the job. (I used your videos to tech myself how to harden and temper to accomplish this) How ever I believe my tool will be short lived and need a lot of matnens compaird to yours. So I will be remaking my slot tool in the near future with the steel you used. Thanks a lot for the extra work 😎. I found this video very helpful and the information will help me indefinitely.

      Yes, as you described, spring steels and carbon steels are not suited for hot work. They work, but must be kept quite cool. But that is the problem.....hot work tooling gets hot!

    H11 , H13. Both great hot work tooling stock!

    Well, not that I'm discouraged from working with H13 but without a power hammer I think I leave the stuff alone for now. Thanks for the video!

    Like the video Roy. Man, that H13 looks like some mighty tough stuff. I think it is going to be a very long time before I start working with steel like that.

    Music, in a CCI video!? What happened? 😂🤣
    Awesome video Roy, H13 sure is a tough material to forge. That looks like a great tool! I have found heating the whole tool to critical and sitting the struck end in vermiculite or a dying forge is a good way to keep a soft striking surface. Your way seems to work well!

    Good video. S13. Looks very tuff. I really like how you were explaining how the different drifts and punches and chisels. How they make different openings. Comepaird to each other. I would like to see a video on just that. But great video. As always. Thanks again. And God bless.

    Good Morning, H13 sure looks like a different animal to work with. I'm a Noob to blacksmithing. Thanks on touching the 2 types. Splitting or slot punch. I understand the slug or no slug options. I just don't know when or why I would use one v's the other on a project requiring a hole.

    Good video Roy. I really like the H series of tool steels. Expensive though it makes excellent tools that last a lifetime.

  • @hannemannironworks1651

    Great video as always man! I love these tutorials they help me get more understanding of the craft! That H13 looks like it is really tuff and would exhaust you real quick.

    Since it's so hard to hold with tonges, why not weld a handle on it?

    ah tool steel and a type of chisel, now if I could just get that tutorial on the cold cut I mentioned last year in a live stream.
    would not have thought it was that tough though even hot,
    oh and first comment here's a blacksmith shop cat >^o^

      well I mean do it when you get time, you dont have to interup your workflow just for my sake, after all beggers cant be choosy and one should not look a gift horse in the mouth I mean you have provided me much teaching and answered my questions many times on the live stream, and I have yet to do anything for you or your channel save for subscribing, eventually will buy something when the need arises or something I could actually use, but have no need for powerhammer yet, and dont just quite have funds to just send a donation just yet, as you said life gets in the way, family bills trying to help with and putting up a new workshop and driveway.

    • @ChristCenteredIronworks
      @ChristCenteredIronworks  Před 5 lety

      But your workshop will be so much more complete with a hand made cold chisel ;-)

    • @manga12
      @manga12 Před 5 lety +1

      I tried to make one but turns out asked my dad about the steel and turns out its just cold rolled, so while a bit work hardened not the most high carbon steel, will try again with rebar though like this channel or black bear forge did and try making something out of that but this time with a pile of hardwood charcoal and the hard bar of steel that I wanted to use all along and knowing how to tapper and better technique knowing what I know now, would love to eventually get a cross pein but I just cant spend 200+ for a tool like that, more then a walmart special and over 50 maybe but not 200 as pretty as it would be, and it would be from one of the youtube guys like you I am learning from, maybe purgatory but even he is a bit high for what he is asking on his limited runs of hammers, unless you want to make me a wood chisel as I am primaraly a woodworker, and propmaker, that dabbles in fabrication prep, and a touch of testing the waters blacksmithing

      Hey buddy just wanted to let you know I got that video filmed today and have your cold chisel ready to enjoy :-) thank you for always taking the time to watch the channel and hope you like the chisel once you get it.. God bless you

    Uhg it's to early for all this drinking 🤪 lol. J.K.
    Man that material is pretty resistant but it looks to make good tools. Thank God for a power hammer (did ya get the updated version of the plans finished yet? I need to send you some money if you did huh?😁)
    So what are the pros n cons of handled tools over hand held tools? That's probably half a video worth though...
    Thank you for having us over today for H13 lessons
    Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out

    What's the difference in cost betweem H13 vs S7 ... I assume S7 is more expensive ?

    How about explaining the actual time it took for projects? I would think to duplicate this by hand that I would have two hours in it at least.. But I am not sure.. Actual time constraints would be helpful to us beginners.
