  • James Woods talks about the new version of Sergio Leone's 1984 classic Once Upon a Time in America that screened at the 52nd New York Film Festival. www.filmlinc.co...
    Sergio Leone’s final and perhaps greatest film, a New York gangster saga housed within an intricate construction that shuttles through time, with Robert De Niro, James Woods leading a remarkable cast. This restoration, including material previously unseen in the U.S., preserves the director’s original structure.

    I hope that within my lifetime I am able to see the film the way that Sergio Leone intended. Even the "extended" version is extremely cut down. They had over 18 hours of film and the story was meant to be told through two films that were 6 hours long. Imagine how much of this masterpiece we are missing. You can find some of the scenes online but most of it never made it to the internet. I truly hope before I die I am able to see it.

    Usually, I'd put James Woods on the acting scale of men like Patrick Stewart, he's a really good and talented actor and is an iconic legendary gift at voice acting like Stewart but he wouldn't be on the level of acting like say, Robert De Niro or Daniel Day-Lewis. But Once Upon a Time in America was his standout role. This was the role where he was every bit as brilliant and Oscar-worthy as De Niro was, the one where he deserved to win an Oscar alongside De Niro, the one to me that gives Day-Lewis performances a run for their money. James Woods went from his standard Patrick Stewart level acting in most of his films, to brilliant Robert De Niro and Daniel Day-Lewis level acting in it. He was absolutely brilliant in Once Upon a Time in America, and it is by far to me the greatest performance of his career. He, alongside Leone, De Niro and Morricone was one of the film's defining aspects. I wonder what it would be like if he played Dr. Zander Rice in Logan instead of Richard E. Grant?

    • @denisdaly1708
      @denisdaly1708 Před 7 lety +13

      Galaxy Red Woods outacted DeNiro in this film. He was also brilliant in Salvador. But this is his best. And it is DeNiro's best or second best. They were brilliant. DeNiro spent a year preparing for this film. And it shows.

    I remember vividly purchasing "Once Upon A Time In America" when it was first released on home video VHS (WB films used to release their films in those awkward clamshell cases much like those old Disney classics) - it was the shortened version, which I never realized then that there was this epic 229 minute release. I remember watching that short version and thinking that it was good (I'm a huge DeNiro and Woods fan as it is) but not blown away. Then, a few years later I found the original version of the film in a Blockbuster video store and rented it - It literally blew me away! Morricone's music was on n a par, if not better, than any top film score in movie history and the 'entire' cast was Oscar-worthy! Next to "The Godfather" (1&2), "Once Upon A Time In America" is the best gangster/drama film ever made!

    My friends and I always thought it was a masterpiece. Then again Leone was always my favourite director. So very sad he never got to see this day realised.

    I love this man!! I know he is deeply “conservative,” and all. But he’s a good guy, funny and passionate. These things are what make him such a great actor. As someone who’s trolled the shit out of him on Twitter, I don’t care about his politics. He’s a good guy with a smartass mouth filled with hilarious one liners that make me laugh in spite of myself and my own political leanings. I don’t get why people hate each other over that stuff or why I have to be so tribal over politics when things like THIS, the culture of our shared experience through the joy of film, music, art, and storytelling are that which should bring us all together not just as Americans but as human beings. Just saying.

    • @ianswift3521
      @ianswift3521 Před 7 měsíci

      because politics is intertwined into literally every action we take. everything a human being does is political. even if you're living without electricity in a log cabin you built with your own hands and only travel into town once a month to refille your propane tanks, you are taking a political stance. if you're living in a city and buying certain things, walking to work, taking a bike to work, taking a train, or driving a car to work and living in the suburbs or a rural podunk area. these actions and behaviors are all political. once you comprehend that, it's not difficult to see why people take others politics seriously. and if you think you're not choosing a side, your side has been chosen for you. claiming to be an " independent" fence sitter who has no quarrel with anyone is also a political statement. wake up.

      Um, so much of what the media says about Trump is garbage. Even if you're not a Trump fan, he is still a billion times better than Joe Biden, a career politician with a history of bigotry & a fetish for sniffing kids. He cannot form a coherent sentence, & keeps falling over. At least Woods still says nice things about other actors who aren't Trump supporters. He recently said on Twitter he still considers Whoopi Goldberg & Rob Reiner friends as they were kind to him when they worked together. People like these two, on the other hand, just spew vitriolic hatred towards anyone that say anything positive about Trump.
      You should look into who Joe Biden really is.

    What a poor excuse for a human being. I am quite sure that James Woods and (as he likes to say as though they are great friends: Bobby) Robert DeNiro. Do not even talk! Woods is a fool

    I know I'm a little late in watching this movie. Honestly, it was not worth the wait and all the hype I heard about it. It was boring, long for no reason. Deniro was terrible. Hard to follow. The only saving grace was a young Jennifer Conley. First acting job and she was superb. James wood did well. DID NOT ENJOY THE MOVIE. 4 HOURS OF MY LIFE WASTED.
