- Drawings and naming organic molecules leads to mass confusion for Biology students, most of whom have not yet taken Organic Chemistry. This video will introduce you to this strange world filled with chains and rings and help you to make sense of it. If you have watched my CHEMISTRY BASICS videos I and II (links below) you are ready for what comes next! By the end of the video you will be able to look at structures for aspirin and caffeine and figure out the chemical formula for each. YES YOU WILL!!!

Feel the Power of STRUCTURES
Recall: Bonding Rules are based on valence electrons
Hydrogen: happy with 1 covalent bond
Carbon: happy with 4 covalent bonds
Nitrogen: happy with 3 covalent bonds
Oxygen: happy with 2 covalent bonds
Organic chemistry codifies lots of things:
How Many Carbons?
Types of Carbon-Carbon Bonds
Let's get drawing and understanding:
Ethanol: (structure to formula: C2H6O
Ethanol has two carbon atoms (eth-) with a single bond between them (-ane), and an attached -OH group (suffix "-ol")
RULES:
1. Carbon lives at BENDS and ENDS
2. HYDROGENS bring carbon HAPPINESS
Let's try another:
Caffeine (structure to formula): C8H10N4O2
And finally:
Aspirin: (structure to formula): C9H8O4
Why cant everyone teach as easy as you. Great job Ms
+cu99460 Thank you so much!!!
+ThePenguinProf may i ask why does asprin called asprin and caffein called caffein? if i spell the words wrong sorry
@@Penguinprof mam I came to graduation but i don't understand chemical structure but thanks for your understanding i can't forget this thank you🧡
@@gbssport4835 that's why beta jee ka paper dena tha na🤣🤣
We actually have a chemistry teacher (His name is irrelevant, as we all call him Mr. White) and bro knows how to keep us listening. Very clear and most of the time leaning in a way to also cover topics we are interested in that correlate with the unit
Can we clone you and make you the chemistry teacher for every single school in this beautiful universe please!
Gerardo F Oh yes! If I'd had her in high school, I might have passed A Level Chemistry!
same wish here..
I agree totally 110%. She sound so nice with her tone!
No way, I've learnt more in 8 minutes than in 3 years in high-school... so crazy. Thank you so much
I commented this 4 years ago, I can confirm that i totally forgot about these struggles and that you will too soon!
Thank God for the Hula Penguin. I was about to have a panic attack.
These videos make me feel like a noble gas. SO HAPPY.
+Lindsey Skidmore Lmao no need to be so caustic
LMAO AHHAHHHA
You are all giving me great nerdy laughs right now!
HAHAHA, i get it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wish my science teacher explained it like 16 years ago!
She makes learning chemistry fun and easy, at least for drawing the chemical bonds part... I'm a happy penguine at last!
oh my goodness thank you so much. learned more from the past 4 videos than i have in my entire highschool experience!
Same!
=) i never made it to highschool, so this is great :)
Barely 30 seconds in and I’m already in love with your character and the way you teach.
That is so kind of you to say!!! Thank you!
I've taught chem for many years and have always struggled to get the carbon skeleton concept across. Loved the "ends and bends". many thanks!
So amazing. I loathed chemistry in high school and college. Now I see it wasn't so bad after all. My daughter loves chemistry and wants to be a biochemist one day - I've turned her on to your video series. Thank you very much!
Wow, I can't believe that a video that was a little under 9 minutes long explained more to me than this whole semester. So glad I found this right before my finals exam.
dude if i had this video 25 years ago i would have done amazing in chem instead of failing and hating it.. thats so messed up
This video is the epitome of what a tutorial should be...concise, informative, and easy to understand. Having practically zero knowledge of chemistry, I feel like I learned more in 8 minutes than I probably would have in 8 hours of regular classroom study. Good Job and thanks for sharing!
I love chemistry and hold a place for it my heart since I found out about it.
wow..after confused with chemistry for 15 years,(now going back to it) this video shines some light
I am so grateful that I found your account/videos because I’ve always struggled with these structures! Thank yiu
Even after 8 years, I’m learning something new this very day. Thank you so much ❤️
I'm so glad!
I love you penguin prof. I have been subbed for a long time now and have liked every video ive seen of yours. Youre by far my favorite vids on these higher level subjects on youtube. You explain things so clearly, giving us where to take notice and what to remember, have penguins to help us relax and most of all your voice that sounds like youre always smiling. Keep up your work, we really appreciate it. :3
I can only sit in wonder about how differently I'd view the world growing up had I been more opened mined to this area of study. But I must say, in this video alone you've provided a great deal of clarity to the miniscule understanding I possess. Can't wait to dive into more content.
Thank you
Thanks for such great feedback! All the best to you on the journey!
Yo, you've actually helped me make sense of this! Can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Keep it up!
Where have you been all my life?! You explain this so well! Thank YOU!
Thank you so much! Only 3 of your awazing videos taught me so much about chemistry! Because of you, I am very interested in Chemistry!
absolutely awazing
Never realized it could be that easy!!!!! thanks so much
I think I love you. You made everything easy to comprehend and with a little humor on the side made learning Biology fun.
Had 0 chemistry knowledge.. I got interested and im so grateful that i stumbled upon your channel, you make it look so simple!
Wow! Yesterday I was confused, after seeing this...I'm actually getting it! Thank you!
This video truly needs to be on every chem classes 👍
Thank you so much
After 40 years pause after the last chemistry lesson these that you make are the perfect ones! Thanks a LOT!
the first ever chemistry lesson that i found so easy yet very interesting. Thank you prof penguin ,you are a gem
Thank you. It was helpful for me. Also, you story-telling voice was easy on the ear. That is meant as a complement.
compliment. complement is a grammatical term
@@beef4589 its chemistry not english lol
The way you explained this makes it quite easy to understand.
Thanks tons!!! hope more teachers like you for every single field :)
Thank you so much for putting this together! I'm a cancer patient reading articles on the new drug I'm taking, and have never taken chemistry. I was tired of not understanding these diagrams, and this video somehow makes all this less scary.
I am so very glad to hear this. I am a long-term, two time breast cancer survivor. I am sending you all the strength and healing energy I can. Be strong, ask for help, and I wish you all the very best. 🐧🐧
@@Penguinprof Thank you for the very kind reply. I've always had a soft spot for teachers -- I've been married to one since 1987. Best wishes for your continued health and knowledge=sharing!
I am a nursing student. I find your videos beneficial!
Please more chemistry! You are helping me prepare for my advance chemistry class so much!!! You're videos are wonderful and I would be a grateful penguin if you made more :D
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS VIDEO🤍! YOU’RE HEAVEN SENT

Thank you so much! I am glad you found it so helpful.
Omg ! Thank you so much ! I finally understand lol Ps. Can you please do one explaining resonance structure :)
2020 and your still helping people. Thank You.
You are welcome! Thank you for watching!
I'm so happy someone made a video like this... I was looking up info on some OTC drug and got entrancrd by the molecule diagrams, but wasn't sure exactly how to read the different bonds and other marks...
This is the first video on google when I googled "how to read molecule diagram"
Thanks so much for making this video!
but how to make structures??
Thanks for the video ma'am. I highly appreciate your effort by making learning super fun! #notscaredofchemistryanymore
Amazing video!! Really has helped introduce me to understanding structures and formulea.
Thank you 🙌
Oh my god, it's you. I have missed your lectures, I am so happy to have found you again. You are amazing, and thank you!
But, what if there are like triangles or dotted line or arrows! please do a part 2!!!
Those are called 'hashes and wedges." Wedges are drawn to represent constituents coming OUT of the plane towards you and hashes (or dashes) are drawn to represent constituents going INTO the plane (away from you). Check out the FabioChem videos for more (and more of those are on the way!)
ThePenguinProf Ok, Thanks!
A few days ago was my first day of Orgo I and I was absolutely terrified because I'd never seen any chemicals structures before. Thank you! This video has helped me so much.
This is an amazing channel. Thanks for this.
Such complexity put so simply- Thank you!
Awesome!! Was freaking out before a chemistry test I have in 2 days, but this just made it click! Thank you so much!
At 1:13 min of explaining you got me hooked and answered one of my questions on chemistry with no complications, I'm definitely subscribing.
Thanks for the sub! All the best to you!
Amazing, you turned hieroglyphics into something I can now proudly read! Thanks so much!
This was so incredibly helpful. Your energy and the way you explained it made it so much easier! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very grateful for this video, broke down complicated ideas into simple steps. Thank you.
I have been searching for an explanation for months!! and I have just learnt it by watching 3 of your videos! Thank you so much!

this was the best video ever for me who made me understand chemistry so well within minutes,so thank you.
What superb simple logical explanation for what can be a complex topic! Well done.
It’s first video in your channel I have always saw JG video I didn’t thought others video will help me. Just love it and I’m going to subscribe and thank you 🙏 ❤
This helped me a lot studying for my exam, thanks!
Thank you!! This definitely made it way less painless to look at and understand!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
wow this video was the answer of all things i've been looking for a month thanks so much keep going. I subscribed :)
I cannot even begin to express my gratitude. I'm currently in chemistry for my nursing pre-req & for the life of me I could 't understand how to write the chemical formula. The ends and bends trick & the review of the four bonds of Carbon really helped me to understand more. Thank you so much!
I'm SO glad it was helpful!
Im a management consultant with a corporate finance education, who is on a project in the Pharma/APIs space, and these vids have been super handy to be able to understand the client's documentation!
Thank you so much for letting me know! Obviously you are not my intended audience, so your feedback is most helpful!
Look at you responding to all your comments!! Hi! im a 26y.o. from MA who just began dating someone with degrees in molecular and food sciences ! Its been a great motivator to find refresher courses!! I'm so glad your videos exist.
I wish I had time to answer them all... I try to get through some each week, but that's all I can do.
Here's an idea to impress your special someone... try making a homemade Valentine card with the structure of dopamine (love and pleasure) or oxytocin (trust, bonding and love). If you've got some cash to spend, check out this shop on Etsy: molecularmuse (Made With Molecules - science jewelry & gifts). Raven does incredible work. I'm just a fan - not sponsored. But Fabio gave me a serotonin necklace and I married him, so there you go... 🐧🥰
You are very good at explaining chemistry, I wish I had you as my chemistry teacher! Thank you
hi there, I just want to say thank you. I am going to be starting chemistry this year and I knew absolutely nothing about these strange structures. Before you gave the answer to the aspirin structure, i gave it a shot myself to see if I actually was taught anything. I did it. I actually learned more from this little youtube video than i did in a 40 min. lecture in my biology class. Thank you. I understand how to correctly view these structures now. It means a lot.
I am SO GLAD you found it helpful! You've got this!!! Good luck to you.
Thank you so much for this! I needed it for a Chemistry question as I couldn't figure out where the hydrogens came in, and I cannot thank you enough for how easily you explained this!
Amazing videos and love the way she talks, it just gets into your brain.
It was very helpful! Thank you!!!
I love the way you teach. Thank you for the effort.
You're very welcome!
Thank you this made so much more sense than anything I've read or heard before :)
Kudos to the way you made it feel so easy to understand. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
I am so glad I found this on utube. I watched the previous videos and it all now makes sense to me. Brilliantly explained with logical progression. Thank you.
You are welcome - thank you for watching!
Excellent presentation! So easily understood something i didn't understand for so long. Every Chemistry teacher should be like you.
Awww.. thanks so much!!!

I was never interested in Chemistry in high school, flunked one term and off the baseball team. At 60 years old I listened to you, and was able to draw and write the composition of asprin. She's great.
Thank you for this haha this is the first video on carbon chains that actually made sense to me so far!
You are so welcome - very happy to hear that!
