Naomi and Jack he did really well. African parents defiantly appreciate that.. I personally think that a man should always go to the parents to ask for their blessing. They raised his future wife with love an effort making her into the women he fell in love with. It’s the best way to start a loving respectful relationship with the two most important people in her life.. soo well done jack 🥰

This was so funny to me. As Jack was telling the story I assumed mom was praying. Mom was waiting to hear from God. Jack you did the right thing. That was the ultimate act of respect. Don't listen to other people you did right.

Glad it all worked out though. Lol. All the best to you both. My parents are Caribbean and my boyfriend is Italian. He met my sisters and father and not my mum who is kind of like Naomi’s mum... No boyfriends etc lol.

You got to admit, African parents can make it really hard sometimes. Jack and Naomi, your story telling is everything... LOL.. I hope Naomi still has family in Zambia, it would really be interesting to hear what the Zambian relatives say after they meet you and all the different types of feed they will try and make you eat. LOL
Asking for her hand in marriage is a sign of respect. Very proper. It lays a foundation for a good relationship with the in-laws, and family unity is very important.
since you asked for hand in marriage stories, my husband is from Africa too, Egypt specifically and we met in germany although I am American so neither of us had our families in Germany with us. He didn't ask my father to marry me in part because in the late 80s it was difficult to get an international call though. Usually one had to pay a high price for a few minutes and arrange the call from a center outside of the home (this was before international home calling, computer, cell phones etc). He returned home to Cairo, sent me a ticket to join him and we were married in the foreigner's office. It was on the honeymoon in Bankok that there was a possibility to call the US and my father answered but had no idea that I had left Germany, traveled to Cairo, got married and was now in Bangkok. Once I covered all of that I told him I got married and he was quiet and then my husband with his thick Arab accent said "Hi Dad it is nice to meet you!"...now my dad is not a real friendly guy and is a Trump voter etc....but he says Hello and the call was very awkward. Then a few weeks later we flew to the US unannounced and took a shuttle to my parents house late at night, knocked on the door and my parents were surprised we came back! So that first night was awkward introducing my husband and then taking him into my childhood bedroom (I was raised Mormon so no boys ever came before my husband). That was in 1988. We are still together today

My boyfriend is American (white guy).
For me there will be no surprises because both our parents already know about us. We have no way of hiding it because of distance. We are forced to share all our plans especially vacations taken together because no African parent will allow their daughter go where they do not know 🤣 even though I am in my 30's now.

I think that tradition should continue reason for that it is respect for the parents and also it is the right to because it shows very much that you are a good person and the love you have for this person whom you're dating.

Naomi and Jack You’re Swedish now so it’s time to get used to informality. Partner parents never go by Mr & Mrs X. Always first name only. Informality and intentional economic use of vocabulary is particularly prevalent in Norrland where e.g. pulling air in through your lips you can convey entire concepts. Ask one of your neighbors to explain.

I love the idea of asking for someone’s hand in marriage prior to proposing. In some ways I think it is asking for the parents to accept you as part of their family and a respectful and loving thing to do. Although you are marrying one person, you are marrying into their whole family, and these parents are people who you want to accept and support that.
That is so true, you cannot escape the family. when you marry a person you are marrying the whole family! I know my parents were so happy to be asked it is the best thing to do in our opinions. ❤️

Well when i was 19 long time ago. Some 30something years ago, a guy i liked wanted to marry me but i was not sure. He was kind of nice but wet blanket. I said please write to my dad and he is very intuitive enough to make me know we are ready.
So he did write. My dad was a Rwandan Aristocrat, stickler for detail, etiquette and good manners.
Your man as they would say in Ireland pulled out a scrap piece of paper from a shorthand lil book and using a pencil jotted some words down. I was not there where he was in Kenya, i was in Uk and papa was in Uganda. So he posted the omnious bit of paper to a man who is very kind but cant abide by foolishness!
I was minding my own business in London when the familiar papa writing arrived by airmail.
