  • A former director of public prosecutions has warned that the UK could be facing "criminal justice meltdown" if the government does not take action over prison overcrowding.
Speaking on Sky's Politics Hub programme, Lord Macdonald said: "This is a catastrophic failure of public policy that's been in the making for many, many years, over many governments."
He added that he thinks the justice secretary's plan to reduce overcrowding by releasing some prisoners after they have served 40% of their sentence is "completely warranted".

Well part of the problem is that we can't turn away known criminals who enter the country illegally and then say the magic word "asylum", and Labour campaigns against deporting foreign criminals, and the politicians and the media look the other way when it comes to certain crimes and certain criminals. They're only too happy to go after people for being "offensive" or having the wrong opinions though.

There are a number of European countries that currently have empty jail space. This includes Ireland, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Spain, Germany and Poland. Surely the Labour Government could conrtact with these countries to accept the overflow from UK prisons. This would be vastly cheaper than trying to construct and staff newly built prisons. In the Baltic states there is enough empty capacity to lease an entire prison complex. Move the local inmates out and possibly run the leased prison complex with UK prison guards. don't think Kigali, Rwanda, think Riga, Latvia!!

Anyway, as for the solution about the prison crisis? I'm not sure. Interestingly i've recently been watching loads of documentaries about prisons. Most of them from the 70's to the 90's, but nothing has really changed and we likely have lots of the exact same issues now. And this guy touched upon it when he said lots of people who are in prison shouldn't be there. In the documentaries I watched there was so many complete loonytoons who should have been in hospital in a padded cell who were in prison (people shitting on themselves non stop, hearing voices etc). And lots of other people who were there for what I thought were silly reasons. I agree with that he said in that prison should mostly be about putting away sane, yet truly dangerous/violent people and for a long long time.
