I’m about to meet some horses next weekend. I’m gonna look the horse in the eyes, talk to it, pet it, scratch it, and feed it. I’m not scared because you’re taught me a lot. By talking about rider- horse relationship. As a beginner, and starting training at a school (so with different horses). Any suggestion how i build my confidence, thus the horse's trust, starting from mounting the horse. And i am also being thinking all of the time the horse (even the beginner horse) may do a sudden movement which would cause me to lose balance. Sorry this would direct me to another question 😁. As a totally beginner who is never rode a horse. And also frightened and not yet balanced. Any idea what procedures/steps should the trainer follow? Thanks a million
Hi Dalia😊 When it comes to building confidence nothing replaces time spent around horses and in the saddle. As you gain your balance and increase your knowledge your confidence will grow. Hi Joan, Great Video! I found that when working with my horse, consistency is extremely important when developing trust or learning a new task. Each day I would start out with the same routine I did the day before. For example, when asking him to walk up to me in the pasture, I would try to do this at about the same time every day, use the exact same cues and rewards. BTW I met you at our EAGALA training session. I live on the west side and actually am leasing an arena and a few horses and will soon launch a small EAP and EAA program! Something I do with obstacles sometimes, is I walk on the ground with my horse. Sometimes she needs to see me or another horse do something first to be comfortable, and I'm okay with that! As long as she understands, and as long as we eventually get her over the obstacle comfortably? That's what's important. After one or two times of me walking on the ground, I can usually go over on her back just fine!
I have a young horse who is barefoot and I was letting him walk where he felt more comfortable but I realised it wasn't good for building trust because he needed me to make the decisions and give direction. Since I have been directing him more on trails it has really helped. Sometimes he is happy to go where I ask and sometimes I need to get him to refocus on me before hand. If he gets worried I ask him to do something (anything - just needs clear direction) which is great for reducing his fear and gaining confidence in me as a leader. I like your videos, they are clear and straight to the point. I love the way you show two different horses with clearly different characters. I think there's a delicate balance between trust and respect which might be a good subjet for another video ...?

Hi😊 I am 5’11 and a half. So I feel your pain😂 While many of the horses I ride are 15-16 hands they look small when I ride them. There are some advantages to being tall as a rider. For one having long legs can definitely come in handy when you have a horse who is trying to buck you off or spooks. This has have saved me a few times. ☺️

Another tip is, feed your horse with own hands. Even if you are a beginner and want to learn riding, get some Jaggery for you horse. Pat him feed him and build your friendship💕
I agree, but if you do that they will just look up to you coming to them and just feeding them and not anything else. If you want to do that put it in there grain and not by hand 😁
Hi😊 Wile it is wonderful to have your horse show affection. It is important to have some clear boundaries. Doing this keeps you and your horse safe. For this reason I would not let your horse push his head against you unless you have invited him to do so.🐴

If the horse is doing this, its not on purpose and the horse could have been trying to back up or look at what you were doing, since it cant see you from certain angles. I recommend talking about this with the owner, or whoever is in charge of the horse(s). Horses have 3 blind spots and its bound to happen that they accidentally bump your head. If you are in front of or behind the horse, keeping one of your hands on them and keeping an eye on them can help to make sure they dont accidentally step on your foot or bump into you. 100% discuss this with whoever is in charge!

Hi Kirstin, This is a great question😀 There are a few things I think about when it comes to gaining my horses trust under saddle especially in the canter. The first one is working on making sure my horse is moving in good balance. A horse that is weak or out of balance will often have more tension under saddle and this can appear to be a lack of trust. To strengthen my horse I make sure that all my basic work is really solid. The walk and trot are adjustable and my horse is able to be soft and balanced in his lateral work. Once the walk and trot are soft and balanced you can add in more strengthening exercises at the canter to help increase your horses strength and flexibility. The body is the gateway to the mind. The second thing I think about when getting a horse confidant under saddle has to do with me as the rider. I ask myself, Am I being clear and consistent in the way I am cueing my horse? Am I riding with a balanced position that is making it easier for my horse to relax? How much am I looking for good changes and rewarding my horse? Because every horse and rider are unique. It is difficult to give you any exact exercise. I hope this information gives you some food for thought and is a help. Is anything different or unusual, is your horse looking to you for cues, are you both paying attention to each other? I agree 1,000% - if your horse is not calm & relaxed at a walk, don't move on to a trot. Same for trot, if you can't ride w/ relaxed reins at a trot, don't move on to a canter. Not paying attention to these small details & not being fully present can have bad results for horse and/or rider.

We went to meet her about a week ago, and she was super sweet let us ride/walk her. And now that shes here she is testing my limits I guess. I am scared to ride her and she started freaking out when I go up to her:( Is it me? Am I approaching her wrong? I know nothing about horses. What should I do? The lady before me always gave her treats for everything walking up to her, putting her halter on and way more. I guess she was treat trained. And she wont let me put her halter on without giving her a treat😕 I really love her, but don't know what to do. If you have any ideas, please share.🙏

It look me a week to teach Legend to lay down😊 He has always been a relaxed and confident horse. Every horse is different some take long or shorter depending on their personality.
