I live here in Maui. Been here 25 years. I’m doing work for try debris removal. I’m mostly working with the condo complexes such as Puamana and crossroads.
It’s a sad and painful process. There are a lot of amazing people working on this recovery. It’s going to take a long time but I’m so glad I can help others move through this awful time

I lived in Lahaina for 6 years. Best place on earth. We lived on 445 ilikahi street on a property that became the ilikahi hotel. It was a stunning property built by Mac Suzuki and Rosina Paris that stretched all the way from ilikahi to front street. They spent years building out that property. That was tough to watch thank you so much Steve for showing us, I couldn’t imagine the emotions as we were a mess just watching it here on CZcams.

God bless you for sharing this with us. It is totally worse than a war scene. It is truly confusing to see your apartment totally burned, YET there were some apartments that still had the curtains on the windows, there were vehicles right in the middle of others in the parking lot and lots of areas that everything was completely burned around it, YET the grass is still green, bushes and trees are living. This was definitely NOT a wildfire.
Fires are very fickle and capricious. It was a hurricane force wind event in a dry area with lots of fuel in the forms of brush, gas tanks, dry wood in houses and trees. Are you one of those who thinks there was an evil genius that waited until winds were blowing 80 mph to deploy an expensive weapon from outer space, targeting little Lahaina town. Was there a slight miss and they got parts of Kula and Olinda too? All part of a super secret grand plan? Get off the garbage part of the internet. The crazies always win the algorithms and go on to reinforce each other. Doesn’t make it true. We need to move forward and rebuild better, not sit around telling QAnon stories.
a lot of the grass and a good amount of the trees that you see 'green" has been new growth over the last 3 months. Maui has very fertile soil, so after a fire the grass always returns very quickly.

Yes, the 8 fires on the island that day, and your ridiculous "selective" fire in KULA ruined over 2,500 acres and many houses. Your "selective" fire almost took-out the Kapalua Airport two weeks ago. 60 Wildfires/Brush fires each month average. We "Feel" so selective. Thank You for not coming to Maui. We're so much better for it.

I live on Maui. So many memories of Lahaina. Seeing Longhi’s house, and the two plantation houses that survived, and what I called the concrete bunker house. And 730 Front, the Lahaina Pizza Company, which was the Blue Max for eight glorious years of live bands in the 70s and 80s. Elton John played there. I used to dance every dance until closing. I decided to move to the west side to ride out my final years close to Lahaina town. I closed on a house in Kaanapali four days before the fire took the town, and so many good people, away. Still grieving.
Interesting. So you were there for the Blue Max. I think that building that he is referring to as "Fleetwoods" was Renee's in the mid seventies. I worked there as a busboy. We had to wear tuxedos to work, if you can imagine that. Gerard, the head chef, opened up his own place on Lahainaluna Road after that. I remember a lot of those folks at the Max. Barry, Janine, John, the list goes on. I wonder if Hop Wo still had his little store next door when the fire hit...?

To be honest, I'm enjoying life more now than I did back then. All the meditation practice has paid off. The climate in northern California suits me better than Maui as well. Last I lived on Maui, in the early nineties, I lived over on the other side anyway. Hardly ever visited Lahaina. Windsurfing was better over there.
You got me wondering whatever happened to Gaylord...? The fellow who built the interior of the Max with all that eucalyptus. It was pretty impressive. I wonder what he went on to do...? I remember seeing that place under construction and being fascinated.

I am going to bare my soul with the following words. Please forgive me if it is a bit long winded, but my heartbreak is as devastating as it is to all of you who live in Lahaina and love that town as much as I did the short months I drifted through its streets and alleys.
In 1994 I worked with a production company that managed a troupe of traveling entertainers. We were contracted to do 2 shows in Hawaii for the Alltel which had just merged with Cantel Cellular. The first show was at the Hyatt Regency in Kawaii, and the second was at The Keilani in Wailea. In between shows we had 14 days to kill and were lodged at the Maui Islander. Once ev😮was was settled I extricated myself from the group and walked out to explore Lahaina. My dear lord in heaven, I was literally in tears because it reminded me so much of my hometown in Cuba, an equally historical site. I decided to rent a room at the Lahaina Inn. I became a Pacific islander by proxy. After all, Cuba is also an island geographically located in the same latitude as the Hawaiian archipelago if you look in a atlas.
After our contract was fulfilled I returned to mainland with displeasure. I went back to Lahaina alone for Christmas the same year and I rented a room from a local friend who's house was at the far end of Front street pass the cannery.
Between 1995 and 1998 I returned many times to Lahaina. In May of 1998 I made the move. I rented my condo in Ft. Lauderdale and off I went. Frankly, I can't remember any of the street names, but I was living right behind the restaurant Lahaina Coolers. I don't even know if any of those places still exist before the fire. I was in Lahaina for 9 months before I decided to settle in Puako, Big Island, where my girlfriend lived. I lived there until 2003 and I never returned to the islands.
Nonetheless, there was not a single day since when I didn't speak of Hawaii. The circumstances of my departure could not be changed. After Sept 11 life changed for all of us. I made a decision to never return to Hawaii until I was ready to stay forever and die there.
I have chosen Lahaina to be my resting place. My soul is there.
Little did I know that my soul would end up drifting like a lonely ghost through the devastation of our beloved Lahaina. I suffer from chronic illness being an HIV survivor going on 37 years now. I was home when I was alerted by a friend that Hawaii was on fire. Without even seeing anything, I knew it was in Maui. But I had no idea to what extent it was destroyed. I watched an aerial video from Maui Helicopter Tours.... 10 minutes later I was taken to the hospital with a myocardial infarction.
I have recovered as much as I physically can, but, just like your voice laden with pain, my heartbeats hurt.
My friends here are being argumentative. They say that I am torturing myself with something I cannot change. Perhaps they are right. However, my pain cannot be compared with your loss. To see your ohana, your life, your hale, all burnt to ashes.
I don't know what else to say other than, many thousands of miles away, one man whose life slowly extinguishes, still beats for what was left behind.

I am in sorrow now.....especially when you filmed the Wharf Cinema Center.....I remember arriving by bus to the bus dock in the rear and making my way via wooden steps and stopping by some shops sellling tshirts and other goods. Then looking down at their "watering hole"...forgot the name of the restaurant there. I would then go across the street to the piers to check in for a whale watch cruise.....SUPER SAD that nobody will be able to rebuild the WCC or the town of Lahaina, the way it used to be......

My wife and I celebrated our 30th Anniversary in Maui last October, and drove/walked those very streets. In getting ready for the trip, I spent time looking at videos, researching the culture, and learning about how to be as respectful as possible to this land. That work allowed me to have a very strong appreciation for it when I actually got there, and experienced an unexpected connection to it. No grief can compare to what's happening front-line, boots-on-the-ground, but my heart wishes I had the time, freedom & money to pack a bag and catch a flight there to just help any way that I could. Prayers for all lost, affected, hurting, and trying to figure out what's next.

We stayed in Kihei and every time we drove past Lahaina Town and seen the devastation, shock is all we could feel. Pictures and videos do not do justice to the tragedy you all are experiencing until you see it with your own eyes. God bless you all.

Dearest Steve & Patricia, tears run down my cheeks watching your video this morning. Seeing your home destroyed, the blessed Banyan Tree just ‘holding on’ and the cinema complex raised to the ground! We were just in Lahaina at June - shopping for our souvenirs in the lovely small shops and eating at Down the Hatch. Thank you for your update. So what happens now? How do you get re-housed? Where?

Yes, our "average" of 60 fires each month on Maui and the 8 fires that day did a lot of damage. The KULA fires was particularly bad as it destroyed over 2,500 acres and many houses, but took no lives. Perhaps one day you will come to Maui and fully understand life on an island.

I am so sorry for your loss and for our country's loss. My husband died a few weeks before Lahaina burned and it was the only time I was glad that he died because Lahaina was one of his favorite places on earth. We loved it there so much. He would have been absolutely heartbroken as we all are. I got choked up watching this.

I remember long boarding into the acb store for a cold water, then heading to cheeseburger paradise for a tasty burger.. Glad the Banyan tree survived. I spent a few days in Lahaina Feb. 2022, staying at the Aina Nalu. I went around Front St. of course; a good restaurant there was Paia Fish Market. And I took the ferry to Lanai, did whale watching, etc. I hope they rebuild the area soon, and give those locals who need it priority access.

We were building the Montage and Kapalua Bay. I lived in apt #3 from Nov. 07 to Jan. 1st then moved next door to 771 Luakini st. The green plantation house was being solid ny Sutherbys ? 2 bd/2bth with 694 sg ft for 1,200,000. I called the leasing agent on the sign and struck a deal
Our company was paying for our lodging and transportation to Kapalua
but the company"s policy was 2 men to a one bedroom or 3 men to the 2 bedr
Continue from Custom Drywall. The manager of the apt was Arron Kamauna and his wife Kathy. Wonderful people with the greatest of Aloha and Ohana . Arron was there helping people escape from the fire. Sadly he lost a friend in fire.

This is the fire that burns and melts only metal, not trees and their leaves.😮
Yes, we lost many trees. Outside our apartment was a wall of trees. But palm trees and several others hold water in their leaves, and a 78mph wind (measured with a whistle tree device outside our apt) just blows right over vegetation very quickly and stops for dry, old wood. I know the point you want to make, but it's not valid.
I think the Banyan tree and other big tress will make it.
Yes, it is extremely common with wind driven wildfires. The same thing happened to me when I lost my home in Santa Barbara. I don't believe in conspiracy theory nonsensical bullshit. You should give that a try.
