The french anthem is one of the most violent and martial ones out there, I only started realising it when I compared it to others - probably because it was written as a war chant during the war against Austria in 1792, while there was ALSO a civil war going on. It was actually a time of terror and desperation, and great violence & instability in society. That was a way not just to encourage people to go fight the Austrians, but also to stand against the monarchy and its principles.

  • @robinrehlinghaus1944
    @robinrehlinghaus1944 Před rokem +7

Well, actually, the Swiss flag IS related to the "Ambulance" symbol.
The Swiss flag is based on a war flag used by the Holy Roman Empire, that being a flag bearing the cross of Saint John (silver on red); it was originally the same as the Danish flag and the coat of arms of Savoy and the Knights Hospitaller (Saint Johns!) (though used with different cross arm lengths).
The cross was standardised/modified after Swiss independence to have equal-length arms, among other things symbolising neutrality.
The "Ambulance" red cross (with the Red Cross Foundation, incidentally, being founded in Switzerland, thus the crosses' similar shape!) is based on various crosses used by knightly orders from the first crusade onwards (including, again, St. John's!) who were founded to protect pilgrims and care for the ill in the Holy Land (thus the name Hospitaller). Most prominently, the red cross was used by the Knights Templar in its most well-known form, but it's a general symbol of the crusades and of Christian care for the ill and helpless.
Some knightly orders (such as the Knights of Saint John, again) survived secularisation and still exist today (though St. John's split into a catholic and protestant branch, the former being now called "Maltese").
These orders also still often care for the ill; the order of St. John is actually active in the country I live in as an integral part of the healthcare system. I don't think they still fight muslims, though.

For Colombian people, our anthem is one of the things that makes us most proud of being colombians, it was originally designee as a poem regarding the independence of Cartagena the first independent colombian city, written by Rafael Nuñez, president of Colombia around 1887, with a total of 11 strophes, with the full version lasting about 15 minutes. Also, I want tp watch an english musical now, if thats what they sound like.

Well honestly what do you expect from an anthem written about the Revolution ?
For example the bloody banner part is most likely a reference to a painting called "la liberté guidant le peuple" where a woman is seen waving the french flag over a pile of bodies killed during the fights of the revolution, the flag isn't actually bloody in the painting so maybe they just wanted to make it more epic or it's just symbolic like the flag is bloody because it represents a country that's wounded and torn apart by the revolution.

    2 Comments:
    1) You mentioned that anthems are their own genre. When looking at national anthems, a lot can be divided into 2 categories: Marching Songs or Hymns.
    2) The Anthem of the Soviet Union was so popular that when the Soviet Union was replaced with the Russian Federation, despite the government wanting to change the anthem to distance themselves from the Soviet Union, most people knew the old anthem and it ended up not being changed (I think they changed some of the words).

"yes" and at the same time "no" not necessarily about: "but everyone should know that the French anthem lyrics go back to the French Revolution"
Read this pls, It was for RoomieOfficiale
      :
      F000 Y00 RoomieOfficial
YOU ABSOLOTLY DON'T WHAT THIS LYRICS MEANS FOR US. And you put 2/11 ?!!!!!! WTF
I am French and proud of it, RoomieOfficiale ABSOLUTELY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE WORDS MEAN TO PUT SUCH A DEGRADING NOTE TO MY COUNTRY AND I'M AMAZED THAT YOU DID THIS.
The anthem was created to express all the suffering that my France has undergone because of the monarchies of the kings, the social inequalities and the barbaric killing that took place in my country. There were many problems and millions and millions of deaths and it was like that all the time before. My country was suffering a lot from the inside because of the almighty and at the same time because of those from the outside.
We had the worst sufferings in the world and many other countries had it too, we were humiliated, weakened both physically and psychologically, trampled and betrayed too, yes all that.
But the worst of all were the NAZIES and that's why we lost the whole northern half of the country and especially the capital Paris. The NAZIES had even put their symbol on the Eiffel Tower to express the total domination of my country which almost belonged to Hitler's Germany.
Just like Russia (USSR), France suffered more than any other country in the world because of the NAZIES, especially in the domination.
Only Russia can understand us about the danger of the NAZIES of Germany and even the USA helped us because they knew that if France lost, the USA would lose too.
The "Marseillaise" is a song that encourages all the French people not to let themselves be done against the enemy and to REVOLVE that in spite of all the sufferings, we will always get up again and that we never give up. And even if the enemy dominates us, we will fight until the end and if we have to die to do so, this is our determination and our will. We will never fail.
So if for you RoomieOfficiale the words of the anthem of my country shock you, well it proves that you have never suffered in your life and that you do not know the TRUE SUFFERING.
And France proves through this song, even if we lose battles, we NEVER lose the war and that we will do everything to go to victory even if we have to die for it.

someone should have told Roomie that the french anthem was written during the french revolution/ Napoleon wars. It's a marching song because all European countries were at war footing with them. Makes it a lot more logical

Exactly-the Russian, Israeli, Romanian and French are my favorites (minus USA of course my bias). Everyone should take each county's historical context into consideration at the time their national anthem was written in. Obviously that was not this case w/this video.

France's anthem has a deeper meaning than just blood and slaughter. Our soldiers knew they were marching to certain death when they sang it during the war. It conveys their fear of death but their determination to fight. Its lyrics are gruesome but so is history. France never forgets its soldiers

However I refuse to accept that you look down on men who fought on the orders of their ruler and died on the battlefield. The dead deserve respect, no matter what they once dis.
