  • Winston (Korona Pictorial View 8x10) and I ventured into Little Swan Creek along the Natchez Trace Parkway in Tennessee to fire off a couple 8x10 sheets. This was the first TRUE on location shoot and development since the entire mobile darkroom (The Hive) was built and tested back last spring.

I really enjoyed this. Some of life's most precious moments are the between moments, the broken car adapter, the development in in woods, your sweet pup keeping watch. And yeah, that first print is especially gorgeous, but the whole ride's sweet. You tell a great story. Still waiting for you to get discovered. You do great stuff, and to your own drummer. Always appreciate that.

Haha thanks a lot, man. Looked like a crazy person actually shooting it...which is expected.

    Love 8x10.
Have you considered doing plates? You can travel with the process and develop in your hive. It may fit you well!
    Thanks!

I'm so close, so so so close to at least trying wet plate. Actually, I got the idea for the Hive from a few collodion shooters I admire. My main concern is the space vs outcome problem of the additional chemicals and gear for the process; meaning I would likely have to go strictly wet plate and nothing else. Still, I will likely eventually try it or at the very least I've considered trying some dry plates first. I'm always on the lookout for a plate back for the 8x10 that I could adapt to fit.... Thanks for watching btw.

Label the bag. It might help. 😅
Many years ago (1990s? Maybe.) I was at a photo gathering in northern lower Michigan and one of the attendees hauled his wet plate chemicals in the trunk of his car. The odor of ether was striking and easily recognizable from a good distance. One of the other attendees was a volunteer fireman and told him that if a cop ever followed him they would haul him off for making meth and throw away the key. Label the bag, dude.

On a technical point, why radiographic film? High resolution, to be sure, but there's got to be more. I was an x-ray tech at one point in my life. Quit many years ago. Fun fact: The magazines those films were placed into for patient studies, they were lined with a radioluminescent layer. So the x-rays would trigger that layer to glow, and it was the visible light that actually registered the medical image. While it would be possible to only use x-rays to expose the film, the radiation dose would be significantly more dangerous. Of course, it's all digital now, but I guess there's still a global market for the older tech.

Brace yourself because this will be a lengthy response.....
That's extremely interesting because I was an x-ray tech myself for about 12 years. I've kept my license up to date so I suppose I technically still am haha
You're exactly correct about this film requiring green intensifying screens when used clinically. I came into the field just as digital was becoming mainstream. There is a singular reason I use radiographic film for my 8x10 work: COST. The price of 8x10 film is obscene. Even for my favorite "budget" conventional stock, the cost for a 50 sheet box is around $250+tax so I'm shooting at around $5 per sheet. With x-ray, my source (makes it sound like a drug deal) sells 100 sheet mix and match boxes for around $65 tax and shipping included. So I'm shooting 8x10 film for around .65 cents per sheet and for that I deal with its little "nuances". The biggest issue goes back to what you mentioned about radiation dosing in that virtually all radiographic film is double emulsion (front and back) and the emulsion is scary delicate. It scratches/smudges horrifically easy. I think I mentioned in the episode that I forgot to put my plexi bottoms in the trays and the result is those scratches you see in the scans but it's virtually impossible to avoid scratches entirely. It's also true that this film carries an extremely high acutance and is quite contrasty, which can be an issue but I've found the contrast to be completely controllable (to an extent) during my caffenol developments by regulating the amount of relative ascorbic acid. For me, it's greatest drawback is the orthochromatic nature. While it allows me to develop by inspection it virtually makes all my skies quite bright, which I don't particularly care for personally.
All this to say that if I could shoot regular film stocks for this price I would but that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon. However, I'm about to invest in a couple boxes of color 8x10 film because I simply must see how these lenses render color. Of course that will be over $25 per sheet without the cost of buying my color chemistry....
I'm patiently waiting for a deal on some portable daylight 8x10 development gear first.
Wow...that ended up being even longer than I expected.

@@AdamWelch Thanks for the details. I always enjoy data. That caffenol blend blew me away. Loved your sniff tests. My x-ray license expired at least 20 years ago. I can still mutter "greater trochanter," but that's about it. Crazy that it was all manual exposure guess work with ionizing radiation. Anyway, thanks for sharing your work. It's a great reveal. Happy TG.
