  • Humans are really bad at responding to ideas that conflict with our beliefs. Why are we so closed minded? What can be done to increase tolerance and promote real conversions across ideologies?

Ali, this episode gave me a real ego boost ~ at times I feel wishy-washy in my views as I can usually find something I agree with on both sides of most rational debates. You have reaffirmed what I have known all along ~ finding common ground is the first step in bringing about compromise and meaningful change. I love The Psych Show ~ you were truly meant to do what you are doing, Dr. Mattu !

This is awesome. I love it. It's even more necessary to understand this right now. I like the advice that I can work on my own biases by befriending others who share different views. Great video!

    I really enjoyed this video.
When I was little, every election year my parents and grandparents often agreed on who to vote for. However there would always be one or two who would take on a polar oposite view and play devils advokate in a debate in our living room.
It was a great way to learn to understand that people you may not agree with have put at least as much thought in their ideas as one self. It tought me to use empathy to understand the oposing view and their needs, but keep my own thoughts and ideas as my own.
I wish more people grew up with that in their childhood, every two years a new series of debates in living rooms, and one or more people choosing actively to take on views they themselves did not agree with in order to create a debate, and teach us who were kids at the time that it is OK to not agree, the important thing is to make sure we understand and try to persuade using proper tools.

A great video. I wanted to hear more about how emotions affect our thinking. I'm currently reading _Emotions and Convictions_ - how feelings affects our thoughts_ by Nico Frijda (with others). How is the process made for how we create a decision? Been reading Edward de Bono and Simon Sinek on the same subject.

Discovered "Brain knows better" when I was avoiding reading this week's reading in my psychology degree (with Open University). Have just watched all 4 episodes and am feeling motivated to get stuck in again. So thank you Dr Mattu!
However, I started off by searching for a psychological perspective on "The Walking Dead" and just slid into other nerd related stuff and I am wondering if prevarication and displacement activity are on your list for future episodes?
I'm also going to share your link with my fellow students - maybe there are other sci fi geeks in amongst them!

Would you agree now, post pandemic, about free speech that causes vaccine hesitancy? I do. Just curious if you do.

Great video Ali. Love your show and your opinions. Sorry you have to deal with people like Joe Citizen though. John Oliver did a hilarious bit on internet people like him, always makes me laugh - czcams.com/video/fpbOEoRrHyU/video.html&feature=player_detailpage#t=663

Free speech is totally different from hate speech. You don't have to like every human group, it's your right do not to, but if you defend the extermination of any human group is a totally different thing.
