Green Monster ruined by Fenway Corners project?

- Boston officials approved Fenway Corners, a $1.6 billion project involving Red Sox parent company Fenway Sports Group along with partners WS Development and Twins Enterprises. The plan calls for eight buildings built around 111-year-old Fenway Park, ranging from two to 19 stories - and creating more than 2 million square feet of new space including offices, storefronts, residential units, street upgrades, and new pedestrian and public space.

As a Boston resident, and an architect, that render is misleading. The Monster is 37 feet tall from the field, but significantly taller from Landsdown street. So a 6 story building on the other side of Landsdown won't "tower over" it like these renders allude to. It will be different, but I think Landsdown street is ready for some new development.
Been there dozens of times. You are implying that the field is ABOVE street level. That is NOT the case. If anything, the field is slightly BELOW street level.
When Fenway’s selling point is the history and the aesthetic, you’ve got to protect that. Also great videos Brodie, loving the diversity lately

Speaking of Fenway Park, my late mother used always say jokingly that Boston will never get a new ballpark because people in Boston like "older" archetecture, which I belive is true. My family and I lived in New England many years ago and the majority of people at that time did not like things to change very much, as they were perfectly content to have older buildings as long as they were still structually safe.

The original purpose of the Green Monster was to keep spectators from watching the game from the buildings across the street and therefore, not paying for a ticket. It's the same thing with the new videoboard at Gillette Stadium; to prevent spectators outside the venue from watching the game for free.
The Gillette Stadium renovation had more to do with making FIFA happy for the 2026 World Cup than it did for not letting people watch the game for free from the CBS Scene.

Was it? I see that's written in a blog, but reality is Landsdowne is RIGHT there. 310 is an awfully short distance for a normal sized fence. So a higher fence makes it more equivalent to a typical height further away for homeruns.

In "Fallout 4", WW3 happens in 2077. Somehow Fenway Park survives, in the form it had twenty years ago (ie, before they added the seats on top of the Green Monster). Some of those shots of the streets around the park, give off real Fallout 4 vibes even now. In Fallout 4's world, there's no big office building past left field, therefore it won't happen. Video games predict reality, right?
Reminds me of pre and post 2008 Camden Yards when they built that "monstrosity" of a Hilton Hotel beyond left field.
Fenway Park is a relatively small park with no high upper deck seats. Most in the ballpark for a game can't see over the Green Monster now so this will have little impact. This project is great for the Fenway.
Looks like Mt. Davis. Just extend left field longer.
The people in the building get free ballgames. They can even put seats on the top of the building.
And Fenway really needs to replace the 1932 wood seats.

My mom worked in the hospital a few blocks from fenway for years. She parked in the garage right behind the monster. I can walk from where i’m typing this to Fenway in about 30 min. For the people that live here, this isn’t a bad thing. These areas aren’t primarily some aesthetic feature, it’s where we live. Id rather have these modern spaces than the golds gym, fences overlooking a highway, and barren, downtown wastelands at one of our biggest tourist destinations. On t.v they barely show the view above the monster, so why do you outsiders care anyways?
Boston guy here. As a park Fenway stinks. It's not nostalgic it just is a piss poor park experience.
I agree with you. Massive building just ruins the view. At Target Field they are building a 36 story building at the left field . Very imposing in the ballpark.
Boston guy here, we'll take whatever housing we can get. Don't care about the "aesthetic" of the green monster.
The buildings on lansdowne st are fine, they just need to replace the parking lot, plus what’s gonna happen to the cask?
From the perspective of the pitcher and batter, that wall may look even bigger with a matching green background the new building will exhibit.
Personal opinion: It's more exciting to see a ball hit a building on a homerun, than to see it disappear into a street. It's like a new giant target for righties.
That rendering definitely has the building above the Monster. It is grade A real-estate... where I stood for the 1999 HR Derby. The area around Fenway definitely is ripe for redevelopment. I would never want to live on that road owning a car. Nightmare. But... if they can make sure the Citgo Sign is viewable from home plate... that might be the move. Slide the top floor from "off to the side" to a split, and put the lawn roof in between that level so there is a view of the sign.
I'm already annoyed by the apartment sign that obstructs the citgo sign from a lot of street angles now
This just popped up for me even though it's almost a year old. I live 14 miles from Fenway Park on the South Shore. The area around the park is absolutely getting destroyed. The MGM venue in centerfield is so, so shitty. I hate it. And John Henry seemingly has been hanging out with John Fisher and taking lessons on how to be "frugal" even tho the team is better than what we expected on paper. I still think they're going to be trash by mid August. These ballpark villages are absolutely lame.
I don't understand why seeing a modern building beyond the left field wall is such an issue.

People don't like the fact it doesn't fit the aesthetics of the ballpark, a modern structure there will stick out like a sore thumb, that's probably why people feel so negatively about it.

It’s not the fact that it’s modern. it will ruin the skyline behind the green monster. Citgo sign will get blocked with most of the blue sky behind it. From business perspectives. The monster was to keep ppl out from seeing games for free. They build this building. Guaranteed they will have the same problem again. If it’s a 1 or 2 story. It wouldn’t be a big deal but from the rendering it looks like it towers over the monster. It’s gaudy, tacky, and has the smell of elitism
Hopefully they will be able to creat a view corridor so that you can see the Citgo sign. FYI, at some point someone will buy the air rights over Mass Pike and build something over it as well...
I grew up with the old screen on the monster. Later they added the Green Monster seats. I don’t think this is a big deal.
Green Monster seats are very well hidden with the bar top format. Does not change the aestheic much. This would.
Change in life is inevitable. If that building gets constructed then yes, there will be critics. There always are. But after a few seasons it won't matter. Fans will have gotten used to it and won't pay much, if any, attention to it, especially those in the lower level seats behind home plate and down the base paths. The Green Monster will still be the dominant view. Whether wind patterns will change is a good question. When Petco Park was built it was definitely a pitchers' park. After a lot of the surroundind development was completed (and some fence adjustments) the park plays fairer. Fear not. Fenway will survive and will continue to be a fun place to see a game. No buildings will be constructed on second base.
I couldn't agree more. Obviously change is hard but the city must grow and adapt and that means that Fenway won't look the same. Fenway is part of a living city. It's not an artifact in a museum.

I have no problem with the building beyond the Green Monster, but I do with its modern architecture. Better the building had a Edwardian architecture facade similar to buildings built during the pre First World War era similar to the rest of the Fenway Park neighborhood... Lots of stone and brick, not glass and concrete...
Right mine as well ruin it some more by adding a roof above Fenway

The building beyond left will tower over the monster as the field is lower than the surrounding street level.
I’m from the Bay Area; a lifelong A’s fan. But I grew up in New England, and rooted for my team, when they came to play against the Red Sox. A fair bit has changed at Fenway, since I was a kid. Would certainly be sad to see the iconic views be obstructed by new construction.

If they’re doing this then that means Fenway will NEVER be replaced. There’s no universe where the Sox play in a new stadium like the Yanks did
If they are going to build a bigger structure behind the Green Monster, might as well make it a loosely connected part of Fenway Park, with some specific conditions: at least make it aesthetically pleasing enough to play with and be a part of the ballpark (like the "factory building" in Camden Yards or the Western Metal Supply Co. building in Petco Park) and also name that building that will make the Green Monster and this new building can co-exist with each other.
I'm suggesting some names like the "Red Monster Hotel / The Red Monster" or "Red Giant Inn / The Red Giant" can suffice. (I'm picking color red because Red Sox, also the building needs to be red-ish btw)
That building looks boring. Make it brick... maybe a cool tower like in Petco or a warehouse feel like Ford Field or Camden Yards?

Some of these iconic venues go beyond the ownership of just the cities & clubs themselves. They’re American cultural icons & need to be preserved. I go to Boston every October for my bday. One of the main reasons is because of the history in the city. You add too much new, and that sense of history & culture just fades away & you’ve just got another city.

With previous changes, "The Green Monster" has already become "The Wall of Merchandising" and lost much of its unique character. It does remain an interesting obstacle to hitting a home run in left field, but the addition of a modern building behind it will further drag an iconic ballpark into the dark destiny of American baseball - a crass commercial endeavor appealing to modern convenience and maximum monetization. True baseball fans know how to look past all of these distracting trappings to see The Great Game, but its getting more expensive and more annoying to be one of the faithful.

@@GrimmelSummascriptus There are less advertisements on it now than there were in the 1920s thru around the 1960s from looking at historical photos. With the game becoming more televised in the 60s they decided to make the parks look "cleaner" and removed all the advertising. When the retro parks started in the 90s the advertising came back with them.

The neighborhood surrounding around Fenway park desperately needs a revitalization and the ballpark seems very disconnected to the Kenmore side of Fenway due to the Mass Pike which is just a busy highway. Other than maybe the Cask on the corner there isn't anything on Lansdowne that I would be sad to see go and if they can expand over the highway to connect Fenway to the rest of the neighborhood I would see that as a win. The building behind the Monster is certainly the most concerning factor especially considering that it seems very intentional that it was placed there. It's hard to imagine watching a game from the monster in the shadows of a 6 story building, how monsterous will the monster look then? I'm hoping they just included that building in the rendering knowing what the obvious public reaction would be, so they can get some good press when they announce they are revising the plans to appease the fans.
Actually forget all this garbage they better figure out the damn roster and get this team to the playoffs before trying to become urban planners what a joke

I thought you were an 80s fan Brody so why does the Boston Red Sox Fenway park green monster thing why does that what does that interest you so much I mean obviously they’re trying to do it to make it somewhat of a similar model to like Wrigley Field they want to drill more business more revenue so that makes sense but Fenway Park is still gonna be unique and from depending on which way you’re sitting if it even happens yeah I might be approved but something might come up and it ends up getting ends up not getting to happen so I just have to wait and see now I can see a lot of Red Sox fans not liking it says that you’re a season-ticket holder that makes sense
