York 100 Vise Restoration

- I picked up this York 100 vise for $10. I cleaned off all the crud, grease, and dirt with some varsol. I used my die grinder and wire wheel attachment to clean off the rust and finally painted and re-greased the whole thing. I made sure to tape off the critical areas to keep them clean. The jaws were pretty gummed up with aluminum but they cleaned up very nicely as well! This vise is sure to last another lifetime!
I only used a couple tools in this video...
Nitrile gloves - amzn.to/2kFq8Bc
Grease: amzn.to/2rhTMPG
Wire brush (die grinder attachment): amzn.to/2JObjGL
Paint Stipper: amzn.to/2Ks19xA
Die Grinder: amzn.to/2GNa7EJ
Metal drift/punch set: amzn.to/2YHSL1U - Jak na to + styl
Concise, not too much talking heads, good camera thus easy to follow. Thanks!
I liked you didn’t polish it too much, saving the character of the tool.
Nice colorful restoration of a good little York.
Thanks Thomas!
I love vintage tools I subscribed your channel.
Great clean up of a badass vise! 👍👍
Thanks!
Beautyfull vise,and color also.
Nice restoration man! It came out nice. Also I like the camera and the attention to detail. Good job. 👍👊
Thank you!

30? Hah! Try 100

We’ll done ! Awesome job
Thank you!
Good job!
Thank you Ed!
Hi bro 👋👋👋very good restoration 👍👍👍👍
very my type of restoration...not super polish....excellent work
That's fantastic :D
Thank you!
Restore that Wilton it would make a great project ☺️
Thanks for the video, very useful tips for my own vice restoration.
That's a sexy vice!
Thanks!
Nice restoration, cool vice. Surprised you didn’t highlight the logos but impressed you masked all the touching faces. Possibly a file to run through the jaw screws to tidy them up but overall a vice I would be happy to own. Keep up the good work!
It looked original when I got it and the logos were painted red, so I went with that. The jaw screws were in rough shape and I didn't show their clean-up but I did file the heads and clean up the slot quite a bit. Maybe I'll look for new screws next time and save myself the trouble. Thanks for commenting!
Is it good that much ?
I just bought a 150 A in excellent condition here in EGYPT and wanna to make sure is it cast or solid iron
Thx guys

Good vice, a total steal at 10 bucks!
Gread job restoring it, it looks superb when you're done but I was disappointed at the end when we could see that the screws hadn't been tidied up and the holes in the jaws still had rust in them. Both minor points but 9/10 instead of 10/10.
I agree. I didn't show the screws as much as I should have but I swear they were much much worse when I started. High humidity and sitting for a few days between filming is the rust culprit. None the less, thanks for commenting!
Great job. I’m about to redo my dad’s old vice that I found in his basement. Can you tell me what paint you used?
Я тоже люблю заниматься такой работой. От конечного результата, аж самому приятно.
благодарю вас!
I have York 150mm and York 80mm. Larger one is very tough. Smaller is also hi-quality, but I use it as mobile unit attached to a piece of wood when working outside. I can step or sit on that piece of wood and use is at stable holder for angle grinding, cutting, welding etc.
This is not restoration, rather quick cosmetic re-paint. Not even proper primer base was used. But it is vise at the end, not a sportscar, so it does not matter. Just keep the main parts lubricated and it will work for several generations.
Thank you! In my experience using a primer only worsens the paint adhesion, especially with cast iron. Putting oil-based paint directly onto the cast iron allows the paint to grip into the pores and imperfections in the casting, resulting in a very tough paint job. Applying primer first effectively smooths out the cast iron porosity and provides a smooth surface for the top coat, which is typically not a good thing. Different strokes for different folks though! 👍
Hmmmm, the shoemaker's kids ran barefoot. YOUR vise needs a little TLC to be as fabulous as the ones you repair. ;-)
Thank you! The Wilton is a work horse through and through, there’s a big chunk busted off below one of the jaws so it’ll need some invasive surgery to bring it up to my usual standards.
Nice job. My put a coat or two of primer on first before final paint. Just a suggestion.
Thanks, but this paint is meant to be applied directly to metal (plus it’s oil-based). Saves needless extra work.
Oh got it. 👍
Que irónico, utiliza una prensa Wilton para desarmar una prensa York, jejejej . De seguro sabe del pleito por patentes que hay entre esas dos marcas.
What color red did you use? I have a York 100 I am going to restore. Thanks!
It’s Tremclad “Gloss fire red”, and is oil-based. 👍
Wonderfull job
I just bought a piece 150 A
I just wanted to make sure is it cast or solid iron ?
Greetings to all of you guys from EGYPT
I have a 150 at home as well! I’m not sure what type of metal they used, maybe a ductile iron?
👍👍👍
De que año será la fabricación de esta prensa???
Nice vise, wonder how old it is.
How old is it I just bought 150A piece excellent condition and it was very expensive here in EGYPT
i have the same model how can i know what year it was made
That’s a good question. I don’t think I saw a date anywhere on mine, maybe you can do some googling to get an approximate date?
👏👏👏🇧🇷

Now it’s time to make a real project....
Get off my vise!!!! She's cute is she a honey of a vise!!
She’s a good one!
Another example/proof that WD40 does not penetrate at all....
Bone dry!
It’s like you got half way through cleaning it up and thought, sod it, I’ll just put it back together now and paint it!
The magic of editing! If I included all of my cleaning efforts the video would be hours instead of minutes!
@@PatonHaus show me every second….. I restore vice and have two York’s. I like to see how other people do it.
@@wac36 Mostly varsol to remove the grease and oils, and chemical paint stripper to remove the paint. After that some citrus degreaser takes care of any residual oils and once it’s down to bare cast material it doesn’t get much cleaner than that.
@@wac36 I just bought one 150A here in EGYPT is it good and old that much ?it was very expensive here in EGYPT and in very Excellent condition
And wanna to make sure is it cast or solid iron?
They still manufacture them: www.york.cz/en/
$10 for a vice?? Where is that? Because I can’t find for less than $50.
Right? It was definitely a good deal back then, and the prices for vises have just gone through the roof since.
@@PatonHaus I know. Maybe is the amount of restoration that has been done. Cheers.
5:27 Its not hard to restore those screws
They were in very rough shape
You could have done a better job at paint and rust removal. You just basically just gave it a mild cleaning and new paint job.
Thank you Gayle, that's really wonderful of you to say.
I am sorry PatonHaus, but some just have the need to criticize and can't find joy in other people's projects. It a great vice, and personally I would not have done the restoration differently. Subscribed.
Fan of gay restorations (better than new and super shiny) detected 😅
Bu restore değil bakım olmuş
Spray painting a York 100? shame on you, take the dirt off, maybe a wire brush and give it to your kids(and they will give it to their kids). Also, you didn't actually take it apart, you missed the rear plate. (christ, spray paint on vise like that) Shame.
I’m not sure which rear plate you mean, but the whole thing was taken apart, maybe you can review and expand on that a bit more. Also, the paint is oil based so it’s really no different than brushing on a similar type of paint, plus aerosol paint tends to go on smoother and level out faster. That paint took ages to dry though, really stunk up the place. I still have this little guy and use it all the time, thanks for dropping by 👍
