In this revered Western, Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) returns home to Texas after the Civil War. When members of his brother's family are killed or abducted by Comanches, he vows to track down his surviving relatives and bring them home. Eventually, Edwards gets word that his niece Debbie (Natalie Wood) is alive, and, along with her adopted brother, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), he embarks on a dangerous mission to find her, journeying deep into Comanche territory.

The Searchers is one of the best movies ever made irrespective of genre. This to me is John Wayne’s best effort in any of his films bar none. People like to say he was not a great actor but nobody could play an epic role in a movie like him!

Rio Bravo was good, also. I also like the Westerns that Jimmy Stewart made with Anthony Mann as director, literally they changed my life. Being a coward doesn't get you very far. So, I must, obviously, mention The Man who Shot Liberty Valance.

Speaking of John Wayne's acting abilities...There is a scene in "The Shootist" where John Wayne's character gets a diagnosis from the doctor (played by Jimmy Stewart) that is remarkably well portrayed. I didn't know how well it was portrayed until I was in the same position. I will take his naturalism over a hundred method actors any day.
Try The Naked Spur. Great actress in it also, in a good part, not always the case in Westerns. Janet Leigh. I absolutely love it. I used to have it on VHS! You can find it on CZcams.
Outside of two, maybe three Westerns, the Searchers is not only one of the best movies of its genre, but one of the greatest films ever made by one of the greatest Director’s to ever make a film.

Westerns didn't tend to get Oscars. The Academy is a crowd of leftists.
THE SEARCHERS is one of great Western movie ever made in 1956,John wayne should get the OSCAR for his great role in this film ,but that did not happened,I have seen this film many times in my country and in the STATES
The Searchers is a brutal yet powerful film, with John Ford at his directorial best and John Wayne in perhaps his finest performance. A fantastic Western and character study.

Greatest Western ever IMHO. One of JW's best roles...man, he is so dark. The John Ford company of players..."chef's kiss!"
Several times in the film, John Wayne says "That'll be the day." The inspiration for Buddy Holly's song.
I've always thought that the scene with Lucy, after Martha blows out the lamp, could be right at home in a horror film. It just goes to show that genres can cross the lines while being very effective.
I've often wondered if Ethan and Martha had a relationship before he went off to war,they seem close and it's her name he calls out while searching through the remains of the house.
Was Debbie Ethan's daughter?
The entire scene with Martha barring the window and blowing out the lamp is chilling and really brings home what many pioneer families must have experienced,the horror at realising that an attack by a brutal and unforgiving foe is imminent with no help for miles around.
Explains Ethan's intense hatred for her turning Commanche. But his love for her at the end saved her. That was Ethan's daughter. Ford hid it in the plot.
For an epic story, this movie flows, the acting is perfect, and it is no fluke that John Wayne is one the greatest stars ever. His character is unique to the Western genre but timeless in literature and movies. The writing is what makes the movies great; it is timeless. The best director and cast are nothing without a great screenplay. How many 'great cast' movies have been failures. The reason they don't make 'em like this any more is because Hollywood has become politically correct and social manipulation rather than reflection of society is the 'order of the day'.

C’mon blanket head. I love that scene. Great camera work on old Mose Harper when Ethan is explaining the Indian wondering in the winds.

And a truck went by in the background, but I've loved the film for over 50 years, ever since they showed it at school
God why do I love these old Westerns so much? The acting and the writing varies from incredible to downright painful to watch its so bad. Blue eyed "Comanche" blowing cow horns, lol, so bad but so good! And why is everything filmed in Monument Valley, what would be wrong with filming a movie about Central Texas in Central Texas? Why in every Hollywood movie of any kind from 1950 to now you always have a few guys over emotional like a bunch of thirteen year old girls?
They HAD blue eyed Comanches: such as Quannah Parker, one of their all time greatest war chiefs, who was half White.
The same actor who plays Scar in this movie, played Quannah Parker in another good Ford Western, called "Two Rode Together."
Sadly they cut this movie!!
Sorry. I know it's seen as classic.
But, although an excellent example of direction and cinematography for film students per many.......as entertainment, the movie is a dud, and sorry, a bore.

That is your opinion and you have the right to express it. Just as I have the right to express mine. There are many film goers, critics and historians - myself included - who disagree with your assessment.

Hombre, Unforgiven, The Cowboys, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and many more Clint Eastwood flicks.
@@MarcPaganA western of epic proportion not for the budget but for the story from the beginning to the end. Ethan Edwards is the most charismatic man of the west ever. John Ford is also the greatest western director.
