      Question: how do you feel if the meteorite is actually real? I recently received a meteorite ring. The widmanstatten pattern doesn't look smooth though, it looks scratched or etched. The rest of the ring is titanium though and it's magnetic. Just curious how one could tell.

    Our wedding rings are made of meteorite. The outter ring is meteorite, the inner ring is white gold. We were advised this combination because the meteorite we use (from Sweden, which is dated older than the earth) is quite rough (similar to the one in the video) and would potentially irritate your skin over time. Plus we really liked the combined look :-)

    • @caidNL
      @caidNL Před 7 lety +3

    Great video, I like that you kept it longer, even if it's a simple ring. When you buy meteorite, what kind of assurance do you get from your supplier that it's authentic? Now I'm curious how common meteorite fragments are and what is the reason is for the long crystal structures, you'd think cooling in the vacuum of space would cause a small crystal structure.

    • @vaultman88
      @vaultman88 Před 7 lety +16

    • @Nick-zp1dw

      About the long crystal structures, google: 'steel dendrite'. It is kind of difficult to explain, partly due to the size of the explanation xd. Science of materials is a study which also covers this subject, so for further interest, google that or go to a university :)

    • @Nick-zp1dw
      @Nick-zp1dw Před 7 lety +14

      The crystal structure is partly due to it existing of multiple 'fases' (materials) which each have a different melting point and saturation point. A lot of complicated processes later, this form or shape appears which is called dendrite.

      seems to mee that it is made up of a mixture of different metal crystals, mostly iron i would assume. but there is usually non metals in there too which could cause the drill bit to snap. and almost definitely dull. but with enough lubricant and the right bit, you can drill through stone.

      @Vizual_Racing Před 6 lety +1

      I'm almost 100% positive that it's not a real meteorite ring. Meteorite is roughly $300.00 per GRAM. Unless this guys has deeper pockets than Bill Gates. That big ass chunk of "Meteorite" would not be possible to buy.
      Figure at $300 a gram, 1 pound of meteorite is about a million dollars.

    • @caffeinatedspider3224
      @caffeinatedspider3224 Před 6 lety +3

      You are misinformed. Only top-quality or significant specimens go for hundreds of dollars per gram; you can get random fragments for a few dollars per gram. Either way, it's obvious that it is real meteorite by the crystal structure revealed by the acid etching, which doesn't happen to terrestrial iron.

    Just think about what the meteorite must have seen during it's travels, over millions of years. Just knowing that its elements were created during nuclear fusion in a star, possibility dwarfing the size of our sun. That is what makes this ring increadible, thanks for posting!
