Some comments on the seating for hockey at the Kohl Center:
The sight lines in the KC are absolutely made with basketball in mind as the primary tenant. This was the express wish of Herb Kohl when he made the donations to build the arena. He hoped the angles of the upper deck would mimic the similar angles at the old Field House which also have an upper deck that feels on top of everything.
He also wanted a basketball centered arena because at the time he was also the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, who played in the Bradley Center which was made with hockey sight lines in mind. This meant that for Bucks games, the seats at the end corners were pointed inward, slightly behind the backboards, which Kohl hated. As such, the basketball-centered sight lines are why the corner seats at the Kohl Center point more towards the middle and why the corners themselves are so open (for when the extra risers come in for the basketball layout).
One unfortunate aspect of the layout is that the angle of the third tier is pointed more towards the outline of the basketball court, and most third tier seats beyond the first several rows have obstructed views of the near side boards in the hockey layout. It’s a non-issue for the hockey team at the moment, since poor attendance has closed off the third tier. But it came into play if you bought cheaper seats back in the first 12-15 years of the arena’s existence.
Fantastic overview! Thanks so much for all that insight and detail. I’m going to pin this so more people will see it. Thanks!
Man, if only you could have seen that arena 10 to 15 years ago when every single night 12 to 15,000 people would show up watching Wisconsin hockey.... Times have changed 😥
Immediately came here to say that same thing. The mid and late 2000’s were an ASTOUNDING time to see a game there. Amazing student section then as well.
@@ExileOnDaytonStreet exactly! Hopefully with whoever they bring in as the new coach, that person can turn this program around and bring some excitement back to Wisconsin hockey
Will add: I was in the student section from 03-04 through 07-08. Absolutely the glory years for the Crease Creatures. Student section went all the way through the third tier, lots of coordinated cheers and some songs. We’d go on Facebook (back when that was a student-only place) and poke the opposing goalie. The chants to summon Phil after goals. Absolutely a blast and the best time I think I’ve ever had at sporting events.
That’s what I’ve heard! I’m hoping that the new coach they bring in will help the program because it has the history and the potential to be big but their current form isn’t bringing anyone in.
Ditto, I remember as a late stage 20-something playing the gophers in 06 and it was such a crazy and wild atmosphere people were driving up and down Dayton, university and west Washington towards the capital with GIANT motion W flags. I think we were going for the season sweep maybe? Can't be certain, I was in a bit of a barley fog 😅
You should redo this video for a game this year. Definitely a better atmosphere this year. Can’t wait for the Minnesota series in Madison. Gonna be a rocking building!
With this break in between games and not having another home game for a while I am so excited for the home series against MN!! Place will be PACKED considering what it was for Michigan
Maybe I should make the trip out for the Minnesota series, eh?
Guess I need to make the trip...

@@SACSportsAdventures The saturday night game already has the 100 and 200 section tickets sold out, only 300 level tickets remain on the school website. Could possibly be a sell-out crowd which would make an amazing video!
YES YES YES!!!
I was born only 3 blocks away from this arena, the memories.
Nice! It’s a fantastic venue!
They also have the LaBahn arena next door where the Badger women play. Its like the first ten rows of an NHL arena.
I’m hoping to get there this year but we’ll see!
I miss those packer kohl center hockey nights. They’ll get there again someday
Hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later. The potential is there…
@@SACSportsAdventures I was excited when tony got hired. the really brought in top talent, it just didn't equate to wins :(
@@SACSportsAdventures it’s happening! Mike Hastings baby!!
@@baseballhockeyman1372 the turnaround is astonishing!!
Back in the day the Wisconsin badgers hockey team used to play at culex stadium right next at my middle school on 2019 the badgers hockey team had to move back to Kohl center because Culex stadium is a old arena because it was first open on 1/24/1945 and sometimes the badgers hockey team play at the Kohl center but I've been to Culex stadium in the past to watch a few badgers games but I've been to Kohl center once.
Is that the Dane County Coliseum? Didn’t they play there before the Kohl Center?
@@SACSportsAdventures yeah like that
I'm hoping the Badgers fanbase will be more lively once they get their new head coach and turn their program around
I’m also wondering if people are still Covid concerned about going out?
@@Officer_Boat the badgers regularly pack the Kohl Center for Basketball games, so I’m guess it’s not that
@@Lancer21 ahhh, was not aware, thanks for the correction
I completely agree. They seem to need a culture reset. It has a lot of untapped potential.
I think it’s more of the programs current form that’s keeping fans away.
Great review. I also went to NMU.
Thanks! That’s awesome. Go Cats!
13:09 as somebody who works at culvers that is 15 years old, that’s a nightmare🤣
Hahahaha! That’s completely fair. I think all the ones I looked up on the way home were closed though.
I was at this game
Nice! It was a fun one!
Go badgers! I wish I could come to a game here but I live in the Waukesha area
No way! I live in Waukesha! Totally worth the trip out and not a bad drive at all.
@@SACSportsAdventuresAt least we have the ads to watch which is the closest to us!
@@C-ROY57 yes! I have a half season ticket plan to the Ads. Love going to their games!
@@SACSportsAdventures no way your in Waukesha? You play hockey in southeastern Wisconsin area? I might have played with you at a point. I grew up there. I live in Milwaukee currently as I went there for university.
Holy crap i remember when Badger hockey games were often sellouts
Yeah, things have really changed since then. Would love to see this place get full again.
I did a hockey camp there and they made us do yoga in 90 degree wither in all of are gere
Hahahahaha! That’s so odd.
What's the next USHL stadium on the list
Youngstown Phantoms video will be out in a few weeks and I’m trying to visit one more before the end of the season. It’ll probably end up being Green Bay in April since they’re close and I’ve already travelled a lot recently. I’ll also be travelling coast to coast next week.
Ralph Englestad Arena is the nicest in college hockey.
I think you may be right. Haven’t made it up there yet and judging using that in the thumbnail with the question mark. Haha!
Yeah not going to lie haven't been to a hockey game since the 2010's but this is the deadest I've ever seen it. I guess the program was rougher than I thought. But I guess it can't be helped when most of the roster is away for most of the season for Olympic games.
Yeah, hopefully the new coach they’re bringing in for next season can shake things up some. They need it!
Go blue!
Going to have to disagree with you on that one there! ;)
🤣🤣
Ralph Englsted Arena is 100% times better than the Kohl Center
You’re the second person to comment about Ralph Englsted Arena. Starting to look into a North Dakota trip next fall/winter now!
@SAC Sports Adventures the arena is amazing probably nicer than a lot of NHL arenas
