  • Legendary TV actor James Garner ('The Rockford Files,' 'Maverick') presents the Writers Guild of America West's Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television to writer-producer Stephen J. Cannell at the 2006 Writers Guild Awards.
One of TV's most prolific writers, Cannell scripted 350 episodes of series he himself created, and produced or executive produced more than 1,500 TV episodes during his career. The Emmy and Writers Guild Award-winning writer created or co-created more than 42 shows, including 'The Rockford Files,' 'The Greatest American Hero,' 'The A-Team,' and '21 Jump Street.' He died in September 30, 2010 in Pasadena, California.
The Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement is given to that member of the Guild who, in the opinion of the current Board of Directors, has advanced the literature of television through the years, and who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of the television writer.
The 2006 Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony was held at The Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on February 4, 2006.

The world is worse off not having Stephen J. Cannell in it anymore. The man basically created my childhood. From Rockford Files to The Greatest American Hero to The A-Team, Riptide & 21 Jump Street. The first twenty years of my life were spent being entertained by this man's imagination and it's because of CZcams that he'll never be forgotten!

Look up the term, "class act" & you'll find a picture of James Garner there. And if there isn't a picture of him next to that term, there sure as hell ought to be.

So cool. If it weren't for Mr. Cannell, I wouldn't have a love for writing.

I had the good fortune to see Cannell 2-3 times at book signings. After my father, he is the most interesting person I have ever known. What is totally amazing is that because of his dislexia, he was ‘flunked’ THREE TIMES.

When Cannell says that people always ask him what it is like to work with Jim Garner, that is no bull. At the Poisoned Pen bookstore in Scottsdale, AZ ( a great mystery bookstore ! ), that was the first question the owner/presenter had after introducing Stephen at the book signing.

@@tconnection7935 That's not what I meant. Cannell had this knack for storytelling, giving his characters flaws, quirks and troubles while solving crimes and taking down bad guys. It's no different from Stan Lee did with his own characters. Shared universes aren't necessarily the zenith of storytelling, and I'm not a fan of the MCU (I grew up reading comic books before it existed).
