I did that with 6 Saigas in 2014 when Obama banned the import. All unconverted except 1 (the 5.45). Man, that cost a lot to convert 4 of those, and one unconverted I sold for a meager $200 profit a couple years later. I had something done differently to each one that was modded. Different gunsmiths too. All received threaded barrels (costly, about $80 each). I wasn't interested in high-end ARs as I didn't want the upkeep after shooting though I'll clean them every 3-4 outings of 5-6 hours at the range. I have one still left unshot in perfect condition. My fav, of course, is the 5.45 and I should have bought the other 2 identical at the time for $550 converted. I was concerned at the time about ammo/mag availability of the 74 in the US. Was so wrong on that concern.

A WASR-10 is great as it is. The laminated wood stock is far tougher than any polymer stock, while a tough but compact wire folding stock is great if you want to be able to discreetly transport your AK. The hi-viz sights from XS Sight Systems are great if you want to upgrade your irons, though the primary sight should be an RDS like an Aimpoint H1 or Trijicon Mini ACOG 3x24 scope via a side mount from RS Regulate, which also makes an accessory mount for a white light.

I bought my first AK about 2 months ago and I'm kind of in the middle. I put an RS regulate mount on it with an LPVO, but as far as aesthetics are concerned, I'm keeping it with wood furniture and not decking it out with quad rails and whatnot. I did swap out the furniture for better quality USSR wood furniture, but in the end I want it to look like an AK.
Although I am contemplating SBR'ing it, and if so I'm putting a triangle folding stock on it just because.

Since you had a x54r in there, I’m going to do something similar with my 91/30. I have an M44 that I love and would never modify beyond a modern sling. But I’d like to turn my 91/30 into a practical hunting rifle. Chop the barrel down to 20”, thread the muzzle and put a Scout Scope on it. With a sporterized or modern stock you can get the weight down to something comparable to a Ruger Gunsite Scout. No reason some of the more reasonably priced warhorses can’t keep on trucking in the modern world with some slight modification.

I do both, the plus side of the modernized AK's is Americans have improved some things on a ak like krebs safety. One of the best innovations on AKs in the past 20 years. But keeping it O.G. is awesome for the collectors life.

I built an amd 65 from a classic firearms kit. Other than it coming pre headspaced, I built it from the ground up so I made it the ak I knew would work for me. I dropped the sheet metal hand guard, added a Magpul. I put a us Palm grip on it for ergonomics. It's not an original import so I guess no body could really say much about not keeping it the way it was intended? Most ak "upgrades" could be swapped back to original pretty simply, unless you have to drill out rivets and change trunnions. I wouldn't buy anything that I'd feel like I couldn't modify to my liking. I know that's just me. Love the topic.

The only reason why people say the ergonomics of the ak sucks are people who never handled one and are so in love with their ar they can't fathom that there are different ways to operate a gun.

The Texas Weapons Systems dogleg improves the rugged nature of the dust cover and you get a pic rail.

Nice Spiker. I have one as well. Inherited it from my father in law. Found it under the bed with a 1000 round case of ammo with 3 rounds missing. Polytech was still new in the box and found 3 spent casings in the box. Father in law bought it in 89 and got a 1000 round crate of ammo, shot it 3 times and put it under the bed. I looked at my wife, like "Want to go to the range?" We took it out and shot the 997 rounds of ammo.

I'm not necessarily a "purist" unless it comes down to a rare firearm that really shouldn't be molested. But when it concerns a properly functioning firearm that is doing it's job well and as intended, I see no need for wild modifications outside of maybe sighting systems to help when you get my age and iron sights just don't work for you anymore

From what I understood reading a lot on forums (also getting to know the 3-4 types of gun guys) and watching a few hours of interviews with Jim Fuller (yeah there's people that knows more, and he's never claimed otherwise, but IMO they're not as much "out there" and relevant to status quo as he is) you wanna leave the receivers on these things darn near alone, they're like the rotary engine of the car world and what that means is the AK receivers were stamped, riveted and welded in such and that and this "a'way" for a reason and the SECOND you start thinking you're smarter than the ones that designed and built it and try to AR15'izing it, impacting the factory steel's flexibility and stretch/give abilities, it's gonna start giving you trouble.
From there it's back and forth between gun shops to fix things that ak owners claim the gunsmith did wrong but the ak owner goes "he/she/it/they/them had one thing he/she/it/they/them had to do and I told he/she/it/they/them what to do and he/she/it/they/them didnt do it", ar15 and ak forums are FULL of those, they always go "I never thought this or that could do the job right but I didn't have the time so I thought what the heck", people that literally LIKE drama and SEEK it on purpose.
So long as you understand that the receiver = holy ground, and go from there, there's apparently a couple of things you can do to the gun to make it a tad more comfortable and effective.

I think the part about the gun being made last week or one that is more collectible is the determining factor. I’m not a purist, but agree with that notion and wouldn’t mess with a poly or something else you can’t just run out and grab.

Okay but the standard tiny grips for me feel like I am holding onto an elderly woman's hand
The magpul pistol grip actually fills my man hands, and allows me to manipulate the rifle from the grip far easier.
There is room in my heart for stock AK's, but I wouldn't buy a WASR and try to preserve it for history either lol

Only time I’d tell someone they shouldn’t be messing with an AK is if it has legit collectors value and it’s value is going to drop if they make an irreversible modification to it. If it’s a WASR, PSAK, Z-PAP, go to town on it. If it’s one of the Norinco’s or Valmet in original shape, I’d be warning them to go find another AK to start modding just because it’s a collectors piece at this point.
