What a Chicken Does BEFORE she Lays an Egg.

- This was her first egg ever. I've now learned the behavior that precedes the first egg:
-Running back to the coop alone when free-ranging. sometimes several days in a row before the egg appears.
-Obsession with the nest boxes.
-Walking in and out of the nest box area.
- Moving other hens eggs.
-Comb reddening.
-The rooster is suddenly interested in her when he ignored her before.
Of course she laid the egg RIGHT when I ran inside to charge my camera battery. Oh well.
This is JoJo, a 26 week old favaucana pullet.
We had chickens when I was young. When I was young I thought they were kind of stupid, Now, I'm old,and living in the country again, and I've been keeping chickens for about four years now, and my outlook has completely changed. They're not stupid at all. I love my chickens.
They are smart
Me too had chickens n ducks as a kid, now at 63 I'm back in the country and about to raise chickens
nearly 13,000 views! I see I'm not alone in my chicken obsession. Appreciate your quiet recording style and pleasant conversation.

Hehe, nearly a quarter of a million views two years on! :¬)
Lol thought im the only one with chicken obsession
As a child, I was fascinated about the chicken before, during and after laying eggs!!! I was just staying there, quiet, for hours......talking to them....
Awesome video....
Thank you!!!
I'm in the same stage rn😂😍
She is so pretty.
WHAT BREED IS SHE PLZ?
its a chicken -_-
@@reneebryant7349 she looks like an Americauna. Ok shes half.
Ikt
It says in the description she’s a favaucana
She is a BEAUTIFUL bird!
If anybody has a young chick/hen of this breed in the Arlington/Burleson area. I sure would like one. 🙏🏻
She’s so pretty!! And picky too, her nest had to be perfect ❤️
They need dark, quiet place to lay their eggs.
Oh my god. Am watching this with my African gray parrot. She has been watching intently. I think she understands what's going on. But it's at 7:17 and she said what are you doing? Her timing and choice of words tend to amaze me most of the time but this was just funny as am thinking the same thing.
Victor Baker i have African Timneh gray . He’s been a part of our family since he was 2 months old. He’s about to turn 12 next May. He also has a huge vocabulary, songs, words and phrases, and his timing to say the right thing has never failed. They’re just amazing
Lol
It’s because their as smart as five year old humans
So cute😍
First rule of filming animals: they live to make liars (no pun intended) of us! If you say they'll do x, they'll do y! Great video, thanks! She's beautiful!
Let my chooks out this morning and the leader didn't come out. I watched her and she laid our first egg at 16 weeks 4 days old. I'm over the moon
What breed? That’s young. Congratulations!!!
@@msdixie1972 Isa Browns. The second bird laid 4 days later, then the 3rd bird laid 3 days after her. They've each laid consistently 1 egg a day since they first laid. Had 4 double yokers as well. Really pleased with them, very easy to deal with
Antipodean33 very, very nice! 👏🏼
Wow, ISA browns? I have the same, mine haven’t laid yet but I think they’re going to lay about now (20 weeks.)
We have 22 Isa browns19 weeks and 2 days first egg today we're in Missouri
I know this is an old video. But I can’t stop watching pretty Jojo! I’ll bet she was a great mom to several clutches since then! 🥰 It’s so adorable how they nest and move things around until it’s just so, throwing things on their backs and what not 😆
Looks like she its moving the best top a preferred site outside the boxes. She is very cute. beautifully feathered.
my chickens will make really loud noises and that is bad because in the morning all I hear is BWAAAAAAAK!!!!!!!! over and over again.
Bethanie Snyder same XD they usually want food, water or a treat
Bethanie Snyder I love any sound a chicken makes. It makes me feel like the worlds in the right place. my mom's was that way too. first time I've said my mom was ouch! Love you Mama! I miss you. never dreamed I was going here.. meaning speaking about my mother just passing away it's very painful and the chickens are good thing she loved them I love them it's just pain that you don't know how to place. when they say time heals I don't know how this could possibly heal maybe when I get chickens again. and who doesn't love a chicken saying anything! it's the sound of life.
same xD
Just over and over again and again...

I enjoyed reading your post .I miss being around the animals too with living in a town now .I actually was just watching some N.D.E
accounts before this & i always find them affirming whatever your faith . If youve not seen them before would highly recommend.
These nest boxes are undersized. What a beautiful chicken. Her feathers are mesmerizing.
Have you ever had a chicken lay an egg in your hand? I’ve had it happen once, it was a strange event.
Hmm that's kind of cool
That’s absolutely amazing! I have chickens and I love them so much! I thought watching them lay was amazing but this takes the cake!
Her markings are astonishing!! Like they are pencilled on!!
What a beautiful hen! I'm new to this chicken farm stuff, so just trying to watch all the chicken videos like this I can help my 9 month old feathered ladies do as well as possible! They're all laying now, except for 4 chicks that we rescued from someone with mean kids.
Our neighborhood kids used to put sticks in our chickens vent/anus and would kick and choke them.
One of our chickens was completely plucked by the kids one night when they broke into our backyard then they broke her foot and smashed her beak, she died 4 days later
@@ayoutubecommenter1827 why mention this horrible story? Did you do anything to help the situation or do you enjoy being cruel?
me too love my chickens
chickens are so funny love to watch them run
THAT HEN HAS PUFFY FURS....ENOUGH TO KEEP THE CHICKS WARM ON THE WINTER NIGHTS...I JUST WANNA ADOPT THAT HEN AND CUDDLE IT.
HowardU Grad it's called a blue ameracana and they lay blue or green eggs(I don't know if that is how you spell it so don't come at me)
CharlesGreen22 In the description it says fauvacana
HowardU Grad ya, if it lets u
Neo Matriks there’s a reason u have no subscribers 😂
So relaxing! What a beautiful bird!
My dad had chickens when i was a kid, they roamed free and one hen dug a nest in the ground under our fig tree. My dad ended up putting a fence around her to keep chicken hawks and the cats and dogs away from her.
What a thoughtful chicken-shepherd. :)
Congrats for a wonderful channel, thanks for sharing knowledge very grateful. I am 14 years old and I just finished Junior High School from Ghana. Through research, I came across this CZcams channel and it is insightful. I have high passion for poultry farming. I need further experience and whoever can offer me grants
Oh what a floofy and pretty girl. She likes the deeper litter to nest in! I have hay and they love to form it into a perfect little bowl :)
WHAT AN ADORABLE JOJO AND WOW BEAUTIFUL COLORING, I LOVE CHICKENS THEIR SO FASCINATING, YOURE SO LUCKY TO HAVE JOJO.
looks like she's trying to shape a nest but there isn't nest material she can shape...
Yes...best to use some hay in the nest box. They make it into a nice cup shape. :-)
I use spaghetti
Theres not enough room. And the lip on the nestbox stoped her getting her egg in the nest so then shes stuck making a nest between the nestbox and perch which was an even tighter space.
She is trying to make hay nest, cup shaped nest for the eggs from a small dryed grass as they used to, but this hard wooden material is hurting her legs she is really confused as i think and hurting. Bring her to a grassed environment. That is her natural habitation. comfortable and saver for her and For the eggs.
Such a pretty hen! So cute!
chicken: *kicks egg calmly*
In my chicken nest boxes I have hay for their bedding after a couple of circles and deciding of the two nests which is best they go straight down. I have shavings and a mixture of Timothy hay where they roost and feed during the day they are free to roam around the garden.
Waiting for the hen to yell SONO CHI NO SADAME JOOOOOJOOOOO when laying an egg
The egg laying place looks so uncomfortable
No wonder she is trying to get it in shape
Lol
Mumtaz Mahmood totally agree
Ikr but they do scrape and so that
No - that’s what they love 💚
It's not uncomfortable. They just move stuff around, "nesting." My dog also did the same behavior right before she started pushing out puppies lol. They just like to personalize their space.
Cute 🐔I love all their unique behaviors🐔 chickens are awesome 🐓🐔🐣
Shes very cute and you have made a nice home for her
She is great looking bird, and well loved too !
Wood ship is no that good becouse hens spread everywhere, Hay or Straw is better. Every week or two just add a little more or change it if is wet or durty.
Beautiful Hen! Everything had to be satisfactory! lol
I would happily watch this all day as a live stream lol
Nicosaurus Rex I call that chicken TV
Hens ARE relaxing to watch.
My hens are lazy. They will lay one egg on top of another until I collect them.
Sounds like you are the lazy one by not collecting the eggs several times per day or offering enough nesting boxes for your flock. SMH!
must be nice if you can collect eggs several times a day. perhaps country bumpkin has to actually work for a living. SMH! Personally i have owned hens for years. most hens dont throw the eggs out of the nest. that is why people put wooden or ceramic eggs in a nest box. It is common for hens to all want the lay in the same box. Doesnt matter how many nest boxes you have. They will all pick one box and use that. Jojo is a cute hen. But her actions are kinda unusual.

I have plenty of nest boxes, I keep them clean, and I still have chickens laying their eggs on top of each other. Sometimes there’s even two in one nest despite there being empty nest boxes available. My hens seem to play favorites when picking a nest box.
And collect eggs several times a day? Honey, not all of us can. Some of us have jobs we have to go to.
My friend just sent me your video because we’re voice twins (I also raise birds and she thought I had a secret YT channel). And I had to comment because you’re also in my home state. I’m just amused. Great looking coop!! I’m getting ready for my Icies to start laying in maybe 8-10 weeks or so. Or 12. Who knows. That first egg is so exciting!
What a beautiful hen!!!
Will she flip her own eggs like that? The wooden eggs go airborne when she scratches stuff back behind her.
Awww, I have a pullet named JoJo too! She's an English Jubilee Orpington.
I should have videos of my baby Lenny that walked in my house jumped on my bed and made her nest and laid HAHAHA I love my baby girls so much great video by the way
Amazing!
Is that an Easter egger? Beautiful.
Love it, my new girls are going to start laying, yesterday(9/7/2020) someone lay a tiny lite brown egg. So excited and my old white chicken lay also her normal nice size egg.
Poor girl. She's trying to get the egg into the right spot. But it seems that a strip of wood is stopping her. Is that ok?
She sure is beautiful!! I've always loved chickens. Her color is so pretty!!
The nesting box is way too small.
The strip is fine, it makes sure the eggs don’t roll out and keeps the nesting in one area
She is very pretty. Glad to know what she is favorell and Easter egger Americana mixes are so interesting looking. Some of my chicks are week old 3 week old 5 weeks 6 week and 8 weeks. I enjoy people who actually tell you what a hen looks like
Beautiful hen! 😍 can’t wait for mine to start laying!
Even after laying one of my hens still picks up the hay in this manner.
The nest box is backwards the tall part should be in the back it would make it a lot more comfortable for the hens
One of mine did the same, pulling the long aspen fibers from a nest box mat out and making a nest, throwing them over her shoulder. First egg right outside the nest box with its ceramic brown egg. Next day she made the connection, laid her second right next to the brown one..yours looks uncomfortable, like she’s trying to find room..
my barred rock just layed her first egg. Did this little ritual for 4 hours.
Cute lil Easter egger. My first egg got laid in an open bag of feed. Been hooked since
At first I thought she was a Lavender Orpington, then I saw her beard. :) LOL My favorites are Orpingtons, Sussex, Wyandottes & Rhode Island Reds. ^_^
Jenn P. We have a sussex and Rhode island red chicken here! Love them🐓
They cover themselves with bedding or feathers, ancient jungle camouflaging trick 😆 Like when cats or dogs invisible “bury” their food.
She is my favorite breed! Wonderful personalities
MONIB AHMAD Blue Fauvacana
She's a beautiful color.
Dang this chicken have a huge beard
She's a beautiful little girl!
It’s like the chicken was waiting to show us how she does it- DIY Chicken Style
I have five chickens.
my hens haven't layed eggs cause they are still young
What colour eggs does she lay? I love her face!!
I love her little house:-)
I adore chickens. This is a fascinating video.
What a chicken does when a nesting box doesn’t have straw, hay or wood chips,
I'm sure most people do this before laying an egg.
before my chickens were laying there eggs under the tree and not in the hen house
Bethanie Snyder get fake eggs and put it in their nesting box
She is so cute!
Knowing this is an older vid, had to say thats a beautiful bird!!2019
Beautiful hen mama.
poorly designed nesting boxes Hens need to stand up and she isn't able to do that with her size and esp her tail,, gorgeous hen :) I love my Aras
What a Beauty - So sweet
How much preparation, my goodness 😃🐔🥚
I have one chicken that’s very broody She lays on her egg and then when she wants to leave she covers her egg with shavings.. 😂
I have the exact same breed and Chicken ☺️ Theyre so beautiful! I Love their Peppered colored Feathers
She might be trying to protect it.
She is gorgeous
I took my devider out 😊 my chickens love it and have more space. Have fun with your chickens ❤️🐓🐔
What a great idea!! I think I'll try that with our coop
The way the hen moves those eggs around and kicking them you would think the eggs would break open. For that size hen are the boxes too small? Oh, now I hear they are wooden eggs, I still wonder about the eggs breaking.
Such a beautiful hen! Wish I have one like that. I have 2 hens and do not make that much trouble.
Are you sure she isn’t broody? She is all up on those fake eggs! That’s how my broodies always act :)
Just watched this video of your baby hatching an egg n was just thinking...is she hatching or broady🤣 she is beautiful💕
@@brokengbax420 the video I am talking about is about what a hen does when getting ready to lay an egg...I was asking if she was going broody because she was collecting the eggs around her but I see in the video the lady actually says she wasnt sure if she was laying or of she was going broody...n yes I know roosters dont lay eggs🤣
She’s certainly a beautiful color..🌞🌻🙏
She is so beautiful!!!
The hen has a cute Fluff Butt!
Very cute video!
I love he little afroe
JoJo is such a pretty hen!
That is a one very beautiful chicken their
Very pretty hen, does she cuddle?
Our chickens had straw in their boxes and never scratched it out like this one is doing.
Beautiful hen
Such a beautiful chicken.
Not all hens scrape out the nest boxes...
She’s absolutely beautiful. What breed is she?? I love Lavender Orpingtons , but she is not one of those . Her color is stunning
She’s a Blue Fauvacana.
0:27 so THATS how our leghorn egg ends up in the middle of the coop.
So cute ❤️
My hens like to humm while sitting and waiting to lay an egg....so funny
I would not lay an egg in that dump either .
That's cuz your not a fucking chicken, your human 💀
