Uchida ‘Kiev’ 42” Ceiling Fan | Pre Restoration

- I don’t need another heavy project load at the moment, but because of a little accident that happened this week, this fan landed on my hands.
I’ve wanted one of these for quite awhile now. I like the old school stenciled blades, lack of air vents on the lower motor cover, and how as a whole this fan just looks pleasant & calming. What I didn’t expect is that I acquired this fan in this terrible condition, and at a time when the name used as a model code for this fan is such a big deal in the whole world.
The person I was going out with when that accident happened told me not to tell the story until a later date, but what I can tell you is that the first time we saw this fan, it had far less damage than it has right now. I’ll let you fill in that time gap with your imagination. Anyway, I really don’t want to back out of this situation, 1st is because I’ve wanted an Uchida Kiev for years and now I have one given to me for free, and B, I actually want to use this fan to learn the inner workings of a decorative ceiling fan, and how I can repair or make some things on it better since this is my first decorative ceiling fan. And to be honest, I feel like something is pushing me to take care of this fan & bring it to better than new condition as some sort of a piece of hope for the current global situation.
Let’s set the coincidental & political realms aside now, and talk facts about this fan. It’s missing one of its fan blades, one of the blade arms is bent so far that the pitch is actually backwards, 2 of 3 lampshades are missing, one of the light sockets is detached from the light kit, the blades are in absolutely terrible condition, the bracket for installing this fan to the ceiling is missing, and the paint is desperate to get a real good polishing. I’m fairly sure this project won’t consume a lot of money, but it certainly needs a ton of elbow grease. I have a rough idea on how this fan will turn out once it’s done, and I hope I can do better than the picture that I have in my head for this fan

Neat fan! It definitely stands out from the big crowd of industrial style fans you guys have. The gold bands along the motor looks good. I didn’t think you’d actually power it up and let it dance! Looking forward to seeing it after restoration. Knowing all of the projects you’ve done, I’m sure this one will also turn out great.
It really is. Uchida sells several different variations of this fan, one of them have cane blades, but I think this one looks the best. The part when I run the fan is actually a 2nd take. I'd filmed it running on just 2 blades & have gone so far as to writing the description, but I later decided to film & re-upload it running on 3 blades just for funsies hahaha. Restoring this fan will surely be challenging, but I'm honestly up for it

Brief history about this fan :
The fan was entered in Indonesia in 1990s (and still assembled in US, and locally assembled in mid-1990s (if i'm not sure)).
The design of the fan is same like US market one, but There are some minor differences with Indonesian market : The Alaska logo in switch housing, Speed sequence. In mid-1990s, The Alaska has some minor improvement, which is blades design, the rounded tip-end blades were replaced with Dome-like tip-end blades with stencil (only available for Indonesian market)
In 2000s, when the Alaska turned into Uchida, the fan is still retaining its old design (until 2012). The bladearms and stencil were replaced with Thinner one (like Niko one, later replaced with same design like Alaska) and Skull arts in 2007.
In 2012, The design were changed like Thinner Motor housing without any Nuts, Pull chain sounds. The design is still retaining until now.

Tidak mesti bisa. Lubang downrod kipas ini terlalu kecil utk downrod yg sudah terpasang di ruangan saya, jadi terpaksa downrod bawaan kipas ini saya sambung ke downrod ruangan

I'm sorry for being a bit intrusive and its not worries if its private, but what was "the little accident" that happened that week? again, absolutely no worries if you don't want to respond, as I myself recognize I'm being a bit intrusive. This fan needs MAJOR work, but after seeing your amazing restorations, I don't doubt you. That fan has a major difference between med and high though!

Hahaha it's alright. That story makes the other persons involved feel very awkward, I'll have to ask their permission to tell it, heck even my closest friends & fellow fan collectors don't know. Yeah I'm really surprised as well by the jump from medium to high speed. I think the capacitor is a bit problematic as low & medium are currently drawing the same amount of power & have no difference in RPM.

this fan is definitely a Kmart Atlantic air Alaska ceiling fan because i had one just like this its on my channel
Uchida//Maspion worked together with Alaska//Sheng Yuan back then, and they brought in several ceiling fans with Alaska's logo & branding on them. I'm not sure whether Uchida later manufactured these themselves in house or still relying on Alaska's help.

Well, National once made a decorative ceiling fan with blades pulled off from their industrial. Looks weird, but in the modern world, India & China are probably the only countries left that still make decorative ceiling fans with industrial blades.
