      Why did he not slug higher? I know his avg was .277 but it’s shocking he didn’t slug closer to or over .600 given he hit 46 jacks and had over 40 doubles. Maybe I’m tripping, was just surprised to see his ops was only .911 this year.

    A note on his 2002 season where he finished one HR shy of another 40-40 season. The Yankees only played 161 games that year. Soriano would go on to hit a HR on opening day of the 2003 season.

    • @mattray9904
      @mattray9904 Před 2 lety +13

      Interesting, I just remembered that Soriano hit his 39th home run with plenty of games left, but then appeared to be trying for the 40th and never got it. Indeed, he had 11 games to get that 40th. Likewise, Vladimir Guerrero fell one home run shy that same year and as I recall, ESPN was showing both of their at bats at the end. I was happy Soriano finally got it in 2006, but he was getting far more recognition chasing 40-40 in 2002. Interestingly, Carlos Beltran fell 2 home runs shy in 2004, but actually hit his 38th and final home run on September 7th. In the shortened 1995 season, Sammy Sosa played in all 144 games and had 36 home runs and 34 steals, which put him on pace for 40 and 38 in a 162 game season. Barry Bonds was also on pace for over 50 home runs and over 40 steals in 1994 before the strike.

I remember his homerun in game 7 of the 2001 world series to put the yankees up 2-1 in the 8th like it was yesterday. I got out my radio so I could listen to Jon Sterling say the yankees win, theeeeeeeeeeeee yankees win the world series. That didn't pan out but I was livid the yankees traded him away for A rod. Honestly held that against A rod as a yankee, and Ive hated him ever since. Anyway if Sori were to make the hall of fame (I kind of doubt it, just not enough of those special epic plateaus, 500 homers, 3000 hits), I would legit fly to Cooperstown to see it

    Skinny Soriano used to swing a heavy bat standing in the front of the batter's box (closer to the pitcher) and hit god damn rockets, almost everyone else uses a light bat and stand in the back of the box... heavy bat requires great strength to swing but gives you more power upon contact if you got the talent to get the bat on the ball, and standing in the front of the box reduces the late break of pitches which is the calling card of pro-pitchers... one of my favorite players to watch hit ever... fax!!!

    That Vlad season where he hit 39 hrs with 40 SBs, he actually hit 40 hrs. The ump missed the call. I was watching the game. It hit just over the fence and hit a wall just behind the fence and bounced back onto the field. You could only tell on the televised replay.

    Soriano was one of a kind. He played a position that almost never hits for power, but he was a power hitter. He was a power hitter, who hit lead off, struck out like a power hitter, but REFUSED to walk. Strikeouts are acceptable for power hitters. They come with the job. Walks and a high OBP are also supposed to come with the job. Walks and a high OBP are supposed to come with playing 2nd base and batting lead off. Using the club of a caveman and belting 40 homers a season are not supposed to come from a lead off 2nd baseman. He walked so infrequently that in 2002 he had 92 extra base hits, a .300 average, and still didn’t slugg .550. Like how is that even possible? Most seasons he would strike out 3x, 4x, even 5x as much as walk. He also made errors. A lot of errors. Yet he played a premium defensive position. A guy who hits 40 home runs and is a defensive liability is usually stuck in left field or even DH, but Soriano didn’t play the outfield until he got to Washington. He played 16 seasons, was a 7x all-star, a 4x silver slugger, hit over 400 home runs, almost 500 doubles, had more than 2,000 hits, stole almost 300 bases, and had more than 1,100 RBI’s and runs scored, yet his career rWAR is 28.6. Soriano was the Charlie Sheen of baseball. He was really good. But he sucked. But he was good. But like, he sucked.

    Very underrated player, Soriano had some monster seasons throughout his career.
    Also it would be interesting to think back to that Rangers-Yankees trade between Arod and Soriano. In addition to those two players involved in the trade, the Rangers also had the option to pick between Robinson Cano and Joaquin Arias as a prospect to be included in the trade. Rangers ended up picking Arias (who hopped around teams before eventually becoming a pretty good role player for two championship Giants team), but it's always fun to imagine how things would have been for the Rangers had they chosen Cano instead..
