    The students in blue uniforms are members of the university's corps of cadets. They are (for the most part) part of the Reserve Officers Training Corps, or ROTC (pronounced ROT-see).
    Military track cadets are enrolled in the ROTC program of one of the branches of the armed forces. They take courses on military science and leadership in addition to their normal class load. Upon graduation, they are commissioned in the armed forces and serve a number of years in the military. The obligation can be anything from 4-8 years, depending on their military job. Doctors, pilots, nuclear specialists, special operations, etc have longer education or training pipelines, thus the service commitment is longer.
    Most universities have ROTC programs of some sort. A select few, Virginia Tech amongst them, are called "Senior Military Colleges" and have a more formal, traditional and comprehensive ROTC program. Texas A&M, the Citadel, and the Virginia Military Institute are other SMCs.

    Football is a religion in America. It is never "just" football. To repeat, it's just another Saturday afternoon/evening across 100's of college campuses between August and December.

    I was there that night. I'm a Notre Dame fan who traveled to Blacksburg, Va. to see that game. As much as you felt the energy watching it, in the stadium it was fucking unbelievable. That being said, we beat them by three TDs. Great night. Great atmosphere.

    Be careful! It’s never “just” college football. College football is a much bigger thing than NFL. The small ‘case’ being carried by one of the players is lunchbox (standing for the school’s blue collar beginning) containing the names of the 32 victims of the campus shooting on April 16, 2007.

      College football is not bigger than the NFL. The NFL is one league and it's massive. The superbowl is basically a holiday. The Orange Bowl or Rose Bowl is not nearly the same. There are colleges across the country and it is big and it has rabid fans. The NFL is a beast in an of itself.

    Season tickets for top colleges have 25-year to 30-year waiting lists & people sign up their kids as soon as they are born. Basically you have to wait for someone to die to get them.

    My first cousin’s son is on the team, entering his 2nd year. He said coming into the stadium and onto the field is nothing but an out of body experience. The crowd registers the seismograph, used to detect earthquakes. Truly insane

    There is nothing quite like American College Football. Older and bigger than the NF, with pre game atmosphere at many a school that would put the finals of some sports competitions to shame. You want to see just how serious this can get? Look into a little annual competition called "The Iron Bowl" *The yearly game played between the University of Alabama, and Auburn University*

    Being a long time Notre Dame fan I do have to say, sometimes I'm jealous of these entrances, and I think Notre Dame's is pretty good in and of itself -- running onto the field while the Notre Dame Victory March plays, pretty iconic song (you've heard it not only if you've seen "Rudy" but "Airplane" as well) and they add flashing lights and flames on night games. But it's damn hard to compete with freaking Metallica. (ECW knew this back in the day and played the song for the wrestler The Sandman and didn't even pay for the song, _somehow_ they got away with it even on national TV for a while, though that may be why WWE got charged a million dollars for one use of the song years later.)

    Consider, literally hundreds of thousands of teens and early 20s, leave home and go to college and live there. They grow, chases the girls to date, drink, and have all those life experiences you have at 19, 20, 21 etc. And College sport are like it's Friday night and a chance go honestly, get drunk and scream, with a bunch of college friends. And many live there for 4 or 5 years. They rep their college for 4 or 5 years. And forever, like in this case, You're a Virginia Tech Alum. And when you graduate and go off to life, you're still an alum of that university. And more will come behind you. So that's why you root for your old school. And it's different with every person. And look some go to schools with no good sports teams but often they still have sports and you root cause it's yours. And that is why sooo many people will identify with a college team, and will go back and watch a game, and they will put 80k, 90k 100k in a stadium. It actually is very similar to the regional or association a population has with a local football team in England. This is simply college.

  • @jordankennerknecht4929

    You definitely gotta experience Enter Sandman in person. It’s an electric/chilling experience. What makes Lane Stadium and Enter Sandman more of a very special tradition is that it can show multiple man made earthquakes on the seismograph like what that sports announcer said and it’s throughout the season. With the rest of the NCAA college football traditions…not really.
    The only other college that can maybe probably can cause a lot of man made earthquakes is Wisconsin and there Jump Around tradition.
    If you play Enter Sandman in any other stadium outside of Blacksburg it does hit the same.

  • @ajrocks44
    @ajrocks44 Před 4 dny +1

    You should see it live, but Blacksburg, where Virgina Tech is, is way out of the way. My sister has lived there for the last 20 some yrs I go down once or twice every year. Now, her and her husband with teen kids in their third house live like a mile away from the quarry they minds and stones they used to build the campus and around the stadium. It's a really cool place, all this white beautiful stone for like a mile down in the middle of the virgina woods.

The uniformed students are part of VaTech's Cadet Corp which are students who have commited to enter the millitary upon graduation. BTW, VaTech played University of Tennessee (about 3 or 4 hour drive away), in Bristol at the NASCAR track in front of 150,000 fans, look for that clip.
