    It's amazing that Iommi left an imprint on every sabbath song - something unique and fresh each time. No guitarist has done that to my knowledge. Not jimmy page, not even Hendrix for me at least, not blackmore, not Clapton. Maybe david gilmour. Technically I dont know because iam not a guitar player but man Iommi is so the most pleasing metal guitarist to hear even after so many years.

    If you want to pick up something that is not custom, and hard to get that has this sound try the Bare knuckle pig 90. Another I use is the dimarzio Dp209 super distortion soap bar. It is technically a humbucker, but it gives me that sabbath sound with a little more crunch, and sustain. You can go wrong with either. BTW this guy plays the best Iommi riffs I have heard on CZcams

    I like playing Sabbath stuff but only play the tunes that are in E because I can't be f'ed tuning my guitar down to C# or whatever it is. The much hated Gibson auto tuners actually appealed to me for that reason. There are also quite a few tunes in Eb that I don't play due to that reason. Van Halen for instance, Heaven and Hell era Iommi, or even Jimi Hendrix stuff. I thought it was a good excuse to have a bunch of guitars for different tuning, but I always go for my favorite and end up selling the others. Plus keeping strings fresh on a bunch of guitars is a pain in the ass.

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 5 lety

      When you tune a guitar down to C# permanently you also have to adjust the neck, the intonation and all this. It’s OK to leave it as it is just for playing a few tunes and then tune back to standard again of course. Most of the time this isn’t worth the effort for me (and then keeping the guitar in tune in the new tuning), so usually I play only standard tuning, too ;-)

    Sounds great, I have been checking your channel since you removed the last video, the gain is kinda low for hole in the sky maybe, idk, everything is spot on. Also, do you have the schematics for modded rangemaster? I want to built one myself

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 7 lety +2

      Hey, thanks!
      I have used the stripboard layout from here:
      woodylaboratories.wordpress.com/2012/08/26/rangemaster-in-an-altoids-tin/
      For the mod I have added a switch (ON-OFF-ON), that adds a higher capacitor in parallel to the .005uF (.0047uF/4.7nF would be the standard value that you can buy) on each side. The higher the value the more full range boost. So I have another 4.7nF cap on one side (so combined with the one in the middle that is always active that’s around 9.4 nF) for the Sabbath sound. On the other side I have a 10 or 15nF cap (I don’t remember, I never use this side) for more full range boost (around 15 or 20nF in total then combined with the one in the middle), but this combination has too much bass and too less bite for my taste.
      Or you could just build it without a switch as in the layout and replace the .005uF cap with a .010uF/10nF cap to have "only" the typical Sabbath sound (but note that Tony’s Rangemaster had not been modified yet on the first two albums - so you get closer to this sound with the standard value from the layout, around 4.7nF. If you want Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage, go with 10nF).
      And note that this is a positive ground layout, so don’t daisy chain the pedal with your negative ground effects (if you want to daisy chain it, add a negative voltage inverter to the pedal). I use mine with a battery, so no problems anyway.

  • @OmniMaxXII
    @OmniMaxXII Před 6 lety +1

    Very nice! Although this is probably just a tech/rig demo of a admittedly very awesome rig, some constructive critique:
    1) Tempo, seem to be rushing a few beats in various places.
    2) Don't be afraid to slide where appropriate (Into The Void, Sweet Leaf, etc... sounds glorious with the gain 3 semitones down).
    3) Vibrato! Iommi has crazy insane vibrato (and trills for that matter) and great control of it. It can be difficult to get down well, but places like the Snowblind solo feel a bit stiff. Don't be afraid to bend two or three semitones or even have a bend that is slightly off pitch, barely dissonant... one of The Godfather's trademarks!
    Otherwise than that, it sounds and looks great. The feedback even sounds right when you let the strings rest, although Monkey's P90s were pretty noisy/harmonic and those Laney stacks he had were usually cranked loud! Live At Last or bootlegs? --REEEEEEEEEeee!
    Maybe missing some treble or top end but probably not? My headphone amp is on the fritz so I've had to drive my cans in messy ways and my equalization is a bit screwy.
    Great to see you know the details in the responses to comments, too! Always a pleasure to meet another Sabbath fan and a researcher of Iommic studies. ;)

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 6 lety

      Nice, thanks your your comment! It’s really helpful for me to read constructive (and legitimate) critique! Yes, I agree. In the recording situation it’s not so easy to keep the tempo down sometimes and really just let go - thus also the vibrato and bending stuff: I really need to slow down and just let it happen. I was a bit too tensed up and maybe too afraid of mistakes, so sometimes it doesn’t flow like it should and the intensity of the fingers’ tone (and the vibrato and bendings) suffers a bit. So you are absolutely right here!
      The video might be missing a bit of top end, but this is due to the mic position, not the actual amp sound - although my Supergroup clone is surely not the most trebly amp in the world. But I haven’t had the chance yet to play through a real Supergroup. But there shouldn’t really be an extreme difference, except for the different transformers (and thus different plate voltages, different preamp voltages, and so a little bit different sounding) and that mine is only 50W and doesn’t have the same headroom. But anyway, I have used a power soak in the video - if I hadn’t, there would probably be quite some more feedback (and more authenticity perhaps ;-))
      Thanks again for your input - really good to read!

  • @elehnartz
    @elehnartz Před 6 lety +2

    Hi Matthias, My son and I watch this video over and over again. Your playing and tone are amazing. I am currently modding his Epiphone SG special with humbucker-sized P90s and your tone in this video is most definitely the target tone.
    I’m wondering what pots and caps you are using. The pickups to be installed in guitar are a Bryan Gunsher Pure 90 in the bridge and a GFS Mean 90 in the Neck. The Pure 90 is an actual real overwound (10K) p-90 under the hood (base plate is trimmed to fit inside a humbucker cover) so it is pretty close to the output of your 11K bridge pickup.
    I was planning to go with 500K volume pots and 250K tone pots, which apparently was the stock setup in the p-90 equipped SG and LP Specials in the 1960s. But I’m curious what you are using because it sounds perfect.

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Eric! Thank you sou much! About your questions: I’m using 500K audio-taper CTS pots (Volume and Tone, no linear pots at all) and 22nF Orange Drop caps (same values for both tone pots). I wouldn’t use 250K tone pots combined with overwound P90s - might not be bright enough. But it’s a matter of taste. :-) Anyway, you can’t go wrong using only 500K log pots for Volume and Tone. Concerning the caps: In my opinion only the value is important. You could as well use cheap ceramic caps instead of Orange Drops or similar - it will sound the same. The pickups that you plan to use sound like an excellent choice for this kind of tone! I think the P90s make a huge part of the overall sound. Playing the same stuff with the same pedal and amp settings on my Les Paul with PAFs sounds way different and doesn’t have that Sabbath feeling at all.

    @benzit1 Před 5 lety +3

    Wow you closed your eyes and you think it's Tony Iommi who's playing. Incredible playing! I got a question. How important is the rangemaster to get that sabbath tone?

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 5 lety +4

      Thank you so much! Well, interesting question! On the one hand the Rangemaster really has a very special sound which is also different from other treble boosters and it gives this unique 70s sound in combination with a Plexi style amp such as the Laney Supergroup, Marshall Super Bass or JTM50 or similar. And this in combination with the P90s of course. But on the other hand you can get a sound which is not too far away from this with a Tube Screamer and JCM 800 for example, too. The most important part is how you play it. If you play it with the right feel and try to get the vibrato and all this stuff right you can achieve a good Sabbath tone on quite a lot of amps. Tony Iommi has played without a Rangemaster and without a vintage style amp for the longest time of his career since around 1980, and of course he has always sounded like Black Sabbath, no matter which amps, boosters or pickups he used :-D But if you’re really looking for this 70s tone I personally would say the Rangemaster is even a bit more important for this sound than the P90s or a Laney Supergroup.

      @MatthiasStockert  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks! Usually I don’t downtune when I play, so in this case I didn’t tweak anything for the video and just tuned the guitar down. But If I decided to play this guitar always downtuned I would adjust the neck relief and the intonation and perhaps also the action on the bridge.

    Hey man, love the video you just seem to perfect those tones every time! and beautiful playing !
    I've been looking into finding some Tony Iommi sounding pickups lately and, unfortunately as i have a budget i'm not sure what to go for, I've found a few promising options but could use a second opinion, and as you seem to have the sound down, and have tried both P90's and the Magnum 4 and Hyperflux 5 pickups...
    I was wondering which you'd recommend, I'm a big fan of the early sabbath sound and I love the live sound and have been wanting to try out some P90
    s but I've also been loving the live he's been getting lately through the Jaydee 'Old Boy" guitar...
    anyway if you have any suggestions it would help me out so much! thankyou :) (oh and happy Easter by the way)

      Thanks, man! Well, if you’re after the 70s sound, you might rather want to go for P90s. They make a big part of the sound. Mine are a bit overwound (as was Tony Iommi’s bridge P90 back then), but you will get closer with normal P90s than with humbuckers. But I would not recommend the Bareknuckle Pig 90 - they are way too overwound and modern sounding and sound really dull when using a vintage style amp, even when using a Treble Booster. Even with my P90s I never have the bridge volume pot fully turned up or it becomes too muddy and the amp starts to squeal. ;-) And I’m quite sure that Tony Iommi did it similar and only had the volume pot turned up fully when he needed a muffled sound as an effect. You can see and hear him using the volume pot quite a lot in old videos and recordings, and not only to get a clean sound.
      The Magnum and Hyperflux are more like Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules (and also a bit more similar to the Jaydee pickups, but not the same). I found the Magnum 4 and Hyperflux 5 good on the a bit more modern Laney (GH50L) that I used in the other video. But they were also way too dull and dark on my Supergroup/JTM50 clone, so I sold them. But I have pre-ordered the new Magnum 5 and Hyperflux 6 from John Carling of John Birch Guitars now for my other SG, because John said they will have a bit more edgy sound than the last ones. I will try to get a nice Heaven & Hell tone with these then - but I’ll surely use my Marshall 2204 clone for this and no Rangemaster, because on Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules Tony Iommi didn’t have his Rangemaster anymore and used an extremely modded Marshall with an extra gain stage. I’ll rather simulate the extra gain with a standard overdrive then that doesn’t color the amp sound as much as a Treble Booster will. But I will also try these pickups with the Supergroup/JTM50 plus Rangemaster to see if this gets me in the ballpark of his latest live sound.
      In the end it’s all a question of how you combine the stuff (and how you play it). And the Magnum pickup combined with a Plexi style amp like the Supergroup plus Rangemaster will of course still sound more like the 70s stuff than a P90 combined with a modern amp.
      Happy Easter! :-)

      haha thanks for the reply ! nice, I'm leaning towards the P90's anyway ! I've never tried them and i'm not sure which ones to go for, thanks for the tip about the Pig 90s, they were a bit over my budget, but so far i'm thinking of looking into these www.tonerider.com/hot-90 as they're also over wound and hotter, so hopefully these would be good... I'm going through an Orange Duel terror which granted has it's own Orangy sound but it's still a vintage British amp sound so hopefully they go good together, i've also built a Rangemaster clone which i'll try with it too, though that thing is really noisy.
      goodluck with you testing out the Magnum 5 and Hyperflux 6 again ! eager to hear how that goes, i've been also curious how John Birch P90 CEM pickups sound but I haven't found any demos of them...

      what would you say are good specs for a classic sabbath p90? I'm pondering the idea of getting a pair custom wound, any suggestions man? :)
      I also ended up pre ordering a set of Heaven and Hell JB ones to compare them to the p90

      I just measured my custom P90s. Bridge: 10.25 kOhm, Neck 8.83 kOhm. Alnico V magnets of course. My guess is AWG 42 wire. As far as I know you can’t go much higher than 11 kOhm with AWG 42 on P90s. So this would make sense.

    Hi Matthias could you make a video of black sabbath period paranoid?

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey! Yeah, I can try! But it might be nice to try it with a G12M Heritage speaker. I don’t have one at the moment. I’ll either get one, because I could use it anyway, or I could use my G12-65 - which would probably sound quite close, but it would not really be authentic 70s, because it’s an early 80s speaker ;-)

    Hi Matthias I find that the celestion g12m 25 is close to the sounds of the album paranoid that think you?

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Nick! I agree. Speakers are often underrated. In this video I used Celestion Heritage G12H(75), because they were used by Tony Iommi for a long time and I fitted my Laney cab with them some years ago. But it’s much more likely that Iommi’s cabs in the Paranoid era were equipped with G12M 25 or similar. I have G12-65s in another cab (which I believe were created to be higher power versions of the G12M 25 and they sound quite similar) and they do sound much closer to the Paranoid album!

    Hi Matthias, i'm very impressed, amazing job! Just one question....I just bought a used SG Classic with the Lindy Fralin P90 set which has a little thin tone for my taste. I'm trying to achieve the Iommi Monkey SG sound for a early Sabbath era cover band. Which pickup set do you raccomend? Bare Knuckle Supermassive, Stockholm or Pig90? Something else? Please let me know. Thanks.

    • @MatthiasStockert
      @MatthiasStockert  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey, thanks very much! I have tried the Pig 90, but they have way too much output for the Monkey SG sound. They sound very dark, are too modern voiced and are missing highs, especially on vintage style amps. I also thought about the Supermassive or Stockholm then, but I feared they would sound too modern, too. So I went to the luthier and they made me my own P90 set (the ones in this video) to match the Monkey SG sound better. They are based on vintage (!) Gibson P90s (the current Gibson P90s don’t have so much to do with the vintage ones and are quite cheaply made), but overwound (not too much, not higher than 11 or 12 kOhms - but I would have to measure mine to tell you the exact resistance. So you see: the Pig 90’s resistance is way too high with 21.5 kOhms!).
      So I would recommend: Go to a pickup winder and let him make you your own P90s - this shouldn’t be much more expensive than Bareknuckles and you’ll get exactly the sound that you want.

      I hadn't realized those sabbath tones were single coil, i have some John birch p90s in an odd guitar of mine, didn't he make T.I.'s guitar or pickups? Here's the guitar.. czcams.com/video/enCU9Zmwqes/video.html
      did u use a rangemaster here? Doesn't sound like it really.
