The Numbers of the Arkansas CO
www.americanwh...
River Description
The Numbers is widely considered just about the best Class IV run in the state of Colorado. At low levels, the river channelizes and is fun IV- down to about 300cfs for playboaters. At about 1000cfs the rapids graduate to IV proper, and over 2200cfs they take on a IV+ character.
There are six major Class IV rapids creatively named number 1 through 6, although most takeout shortly after #5. Rapid #1 is the most technical, but #4 and #5 generally have the most carnage. Above 3000cfs, the run takes on a big water character, massive holes abound. At these levels, a powerful 8-foot surfing wave forms at the base of rapid #1.5.
Much of the land on either side of the river is private property, so scouting is most likely illegal. Do what you have to do to be safe. As noted above, most people take out just after #5 where there is an abundance of unofficial takeouts. If the water level is medium to high, consider making the most of a short run and takeout below #6 at the railroad trestle.
Elevations: The river at the launch area is about 8,640 feet, while the take out at the railroad trestle is about 8,247 feet.
Thanks for Watching!

First time testing out Super Thanks. Who better to send a little 💰 to for my first time. Thx for all you do. More Super Thanks to come, I’m sure. 🤙🏼
Awesome thanks Kevin
Southeast boater sends it on every rock in the numbers section . . . The level of enthusiasm you exude for our sport is amazing.
hahah yeah that sounds about right buddy very ocoeeish out there...
Thanks for the video. It shows me a section my daughter will be paddling all summer. She is normally in the Southeast, from WV to NC.
Your welcome
High water Ark is some of my favorite boating in the entire state! Love the Vid!
Yes so true all sections are awesome in their own way!
“I’m definitely semi-experienced”….
Very next clip doing a loop in a scorch. 😂
Such an epic way to sequence the video
Hahah yeah that was just too good!
And that park official I just was like wow 😍
I like the ranger warning intro. You shoulda just said… ‘Honey, I’m Wade Harrison and to me, a warning is a dare… now watch this!’ Glad you saved some CO content.
No way I would say something like that 😂
And FYI There was actually a lot to our conversation we chatted for like 15mins my group was leaving me. I had to edit that out 😉
what type of experience are we talking?🤫🤭
Nah, just kidding. Gotta appreciate the park rangers. They probably stop a lot of yahoos with inner tubes and pool inflatables!
"What are you doing this evening?"
My favorite section of the Arkansas. Even better in a playboat!
Yes totally see that being awesome in pretty much anything
Rafted this many years ago with my kids started our family whitewater journey , remember they had us put on wetsuits in July , was cold 🥶
Yeah crazy water temps stay cold and it’s 90 degrees air temps
Definitely one of the best skill building runs in the state! Next time you’re rolling through check out the stealth put in about a mile up. Number zero is my favorite - a sweet playful boulder garden. Or better yet double up w pine creek 🤙🫳🏾🔥 Thanks for sharing!
I did pine into the numbers off of the railroad tracks couple days later.
I really wanted to do the true numbers for the video. This is a fun run for all types of boats.
But still I love the slaughter house for just creek boat play.
Pine creek is so good. Triple drop and its runout is my favorite rapid on the Ark.
@@skaaddict2 oh it’s perfect easy access and can take about anything down it at all levels
😆🤣 definitely semi experienced
Hahah was just to perfect and there was way more to our conversation that I decided wasn’t good for the video 😉
That was so funny - I laughed out loud when he said that
😂😂
It mellows out from that takeout but still some fun stuff downstream. The Miracle Mile on Fractions section is pretty fun III+ stuff before turning into a fun Class II section. I usually like to do a few Numbers laps or tack on Fractions and the BV town run down the private Wilderness Aware river access or to the top of Brown's
Yeah I heard about the rest of the run is crazy how many moves can explore on a run like this..
I've run the Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas. But that's all. This looks like a good be-bop run to relax on.
So true I always dismissed it in my past CO trips for other runs but definitely recommend putting it on the list in have time and passing through.
shes every CO boaters ranger crush
Oh I’m sure!
You missed the Stealth Put In...Number 0. Numbers is an awesome run, especially as the "numbers" get higher
Yeah I have done a few runs there now are you talking about the putin on the railroad tracks
@@WadeHarrison Yep
That is some moving 🌊
Yeah glad could catch it at what I think is the perfect freestyle flow.
I think you caught it at close to its peak this year. My max was 900 this year. Nice video
@@skaaddict2 yeah it only was this level for like a day then was like way lower my next trip out
Gotta get out there soon!
Yeah buddy one the easiest and most satisfying trips to take late spring and summer so many possibilities to paddle there
Great looking section Wade! I see you're still rocking the Twister X-Creek. You must be liking it still? Maybe more, now that you've had some time with it?
I really like it a lot yes
Oh dang dude, why didn't you put it at the kayaker's put in? That first half mile of boulder garden is so fun
I did go back and put in up by some railroad tracks on another trip this I wanted to just do the regular putin
@@WadeHarrison Yeah the commercial put in bypasses all the good boulder garden stuff in the beginning. Glad you know about the kayak put in.
@@Badinboarder87 totally see that
Hahaha yeeees! Love that intro dude.
It was just too perfect but not to use it 😂
Hey Wade, what's up with your bow draw like at 4:24 where you use your right side blade on your left side? You seem to be using that technique a lot in this video. Does have an advantage over a regular bow draw?
It just a crossbow eddy turn it does help the bow from sliding out and let’s you stay more upright while keeping the hull flat instead of a hard edge drop and gives you a quicker peel out on the opposite side
is it necessary “no” is it fun and something different to work on and just another tool in the tool box yes!
😂 you boofed the swimmer!! 😂
It went
Hey , I still wonder if I should buy a Ripper2 L or M , 5'6 175lbs :) Were You paddling the Ripper L in that video , cheers !
No this is the scorch M the ripper 2 had not came to usa yet this was in June
And I agree your like me in that in between size for M and L ripper2 I like the large because my weight will flux a lot usually in the up way so I will be as heavy as 200lb and when traveling and paddling a lot 170lb I like a bigger boat so I’m probably going to settle on the ripper 2 L as my full time half slice
nice boat control is that a scortch?
Yes the scorch M
I hope you got her number.
🫣uh yeah sure just to check the water levels right?🤔
“I hear this is the numbers section, and I’d like to start by getting yours.”
@@MrKyleb21 😂 that’s pretty smooth actually
Was that a M Ripper @wadeharrison? Response to the park ranger “don’t you know who I am? I’m Dane Jackson”
I’m paddling the scorch….
@@WadeHarrison thanks didn’t recognise
Two rules for #s. 1. Boof everything 2. No Eddys 👍
yup that sounds about right!
Hahahaha semi experienced 😂 🤙🏼
Got to love it
