Going Inside the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant | Super Users

- 35 years after the worst nuclear disaster in history, parts of Chernobyl are still too radioactive for people to go to.
Abandoned and frozen in time, the site of the nuclear plant in Ukraine has posed unanswered questions for decades. Due to the scramble to leave the site following the accident, there was no record of whether the holding pools in Reactor Five stored nuclear fuel.
For the first time since the 1986 disaster, drone pilots and researchers were able to go on-site and use state-of-the-art technology to answer some of those questions. Their Elios 2 drone explored areas not seen in decades while searching for signs of nuclear waste.
In our series Super Users, VICE World News explores the latest technology being used to fight crime, trafficking, climate change and social injustice.

"I didn't come here because I wanted to, but because God sent me" John 8:42 I paraphrased that but the gist is right lol. If God and Jesus were the same he basically would be saying "I came not to do what I want, but what I want" - makes 0 sense

That’s good😂😂care about machines over life😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 the world has gone mad
It’s probably because the drones can be contaminated by radiation and when it comes back, contaminate the team
In high radiation areas electronics can stop working allso
Beacuse the drone can be contaminated and they are most likely going to retrieve the drone afterwards.

I've always been so fascinated by the Chernobyl disaster ever since studying it in school. Hopefully someday when it's safer I can go to see the historic ghost town for myself. So much history in this place albeit it not so good history as nature keeps repeating itself with humans destroying the planet.
Same. But you don't have to wait. They actually give tours all the time
Been there before the tourism boom from the TV series. It is quite interesting. I recommend it. However, I get the feeling it isn't really possible to do UrbX there anymore. When I went, already some years ago, it was already quite regulated and controlled. Most guides (obligatory) came with buses, big groups and you aren't allowed to go anywhere. We had the chance to have a guide that would keep security "busy" a few more adventurous people from our group could walk around. Until part of a building's rotten floor nearly collapsed that is :)
I learnt about this place from COD 4 lol
It‘s already super safe. The radiation on the flight to Kiev is higher than a whole day in Pripyat.
It is safe to go. I went there in 2019. If you wait few more years, buildings will start collapsing. already it is not allowed to enter many buildings but its Ukrain so :D
It's fascinating that even that area is radioactive still nature finds it way
because the radioactive material is from the nature itself duh

It was not a "routine test" as the narrator said. The operators were performing a first-time evolution to experiment if they could achieve the necessary power required to maintain the primary equipment for core cooling in service from the power solely generated from the rolling turbine (after the plant's main power was shut off). They were testing to see if the spinning turbine could continue to cool the core during a loss of off-site power event, prior to needing to run the emergency diesel generators. So no, this was not a routine test and it was not properly planned for.
Wow.. great information
Nope, it was not the first time. It was the fourth time. And they were testing capability that was supposed to be part of the reactor's overall design.
Also your characterization of the test is incorrect. The RBMK was already provided with backup power in the event of a blackout condition. Upon loss of off-site power the inertia from the main circulation pumps' counterweights would provide enough voltage to bridge the gap to diesel generator startup. The turbine inertia rundown procedure was needed ONLY if a blackout coincided with the rupture of a 900mm coolant pipe (a design-basis accident). This is an important distinction, because it meant that according to regulations, a failure of the test did not threaten any interruption in coolant supply. Unfortunately for them, the reactor did not at all resemble the reactor described in the regulations.
Seems like only a few dozen people in the West understand any of this, which goes to show the dreadful state of public knowledge on the subject.
The HBO series was shockingly accurate and actually does educate the laymen on nuclear fission.

@@alexandertheresurrection2810 Those horror stories were from people that had been there for hours very shortly after the fission was still going on. After the fission stopped (when the reactor exploded) the radiocativity steadily decreased and the area has been mostly cleaned. Check a channel called Kreosan they go do cool stuff in Chernobyl
What I learned:
1: They went there to check for radioactivity, but were only allowed to fly in areas already known not to be radioactive.
2: Despite seeing the drone's light reflecting on the water in the cooling pool, they were able to confirm the pool to be "completely empty".
Neat.
An exaggeration, perhaps
Regarding the second point it seems that he was referring to the pool being empty but only from a point of containing radioactive material not whether it had water in it
I lived in germany at the time of the disaster.
The German government knew the radioactive cloud of would effect as far west as Germany.

Wow very interesting … I’m most fascinated by the fact that at 1:43 we hear the same music when picking dialogue in NHL 21’s Be A Pro mode…
I want to see more about that exploration in Greenland. I wonder how the drone needs to be modified if at all to fly in such low temperatures. Is the battery life just shorter? Obviously I want to know about the data that was collected there too.
This video is very misleading. This is not the actual nuclear plant, let alone the exploded reactor. This is an unfinished reactor building not even connected to the Chernobyl plant. The building is just a concrete construction site. No danger for short visits. Tourists go to that building all the time.
If I’m not mistaken he states that initially they were there to perform a technical test on an outlying building, but when they arrived they were asked to image reactor 5 (which as you mention was not completed) as to prove that radioactive material had not been stored there and I assume to allow the pilot the opportunity to gather a better understanding of the terrain for potential future inspections of the destroyed reactors.

That is pretty neat but, I was somewhat expecting it would be used for reactor 4. I guess they thought they used 5 and 6 as dumping grounds?
I was kind of hoping to hear more information about what is inside Chernobyl, rather than the drone and how cool it is. It's cool that the drone is robust enough to handle it, but they repeated it so many times rather than talking about what information was found inside of Chernobyl.
This is very interesting good video
Finally, a good VICE video
Fun fact, I have been inside Reactor 5. Quite an intense experience.
I wanted to say it's ridiculous clowning level where they try to make it sound like they needed the drone because of safety when you can just walk into the abandoned Reactor 5 buildings that they explored here.
@@zolikoff I guess not all of the Reactor 5 building can be accessed easily - while the main hall can be entered, the structures below it might be a bit complicated. So, although the drone might have been needed and the building itself is in no doubt contaminated at some places, it is unclear for me too why this level of hype was needed.
@@ajurjans True, drone can be useful to look into some tighter spaces, but all the more reason to go into the building yourself and ensure you have a good close connection to your drone at all times, maybe even a wire so you can fish it back out if it loses signal or battery or anything.
