The Edge’s guitar on this song is just so raw…love how it scratches and screams at
The same time. Timeless song
And the bassline
Although it is one of U2's most well-known tunes, many fans don’t realize that the song's lyrics are actually about the Polish Solidarity movement.
Now they should check out Sunday bloody Sunday ✌️
@@Joshuadgog some of us just know this cause we're old🤨🤪
@@Joshuadgog
Stolen? How is that "stolen"?? On the contrary, I much rather appreciate an informed response which reveals the true meaning rather than people speculating...and more often than not, getting things terribly wrong!
@@Joshuadgog So you had to search Google for info that many older people actually remember. Good for you.
@@Joshuadgog. You needed google to learn that?
Marshall law, in Poland, was lifted on New Year's Day in 1980, This is about Lech Walesa and Polish solidarity
This is half true. Martial law began on Dec 13, 1981, then was suspended on Dec 31, 1982, then ended on Jul 22, 1983. Jan 1, 1983 was the first day of normalization of political life.
Lex has a talent for describing music. When she mentioned brutal architecture, it just hit the nail on the head as far as the feeling. Wow.
Most early U2 albums contained songs with themes of war, oppression, and freedom. Often times those lyrics were juxtaposed with lyrics of love and desire. I always described early U2 music as having haunting Melodies particularly characterized by The Edges guitar riffs and piano playing. And punctuated by Larry Mullen, Jr’s drumming and Adam Clayton’s heavy bass. All the elements came together.
I've known this song since it was first released but never appreciated how heavy that bass sounds, until listening here just now with the sound up and good headphones. Brilliant.
And now they are puppets of the aggressors!
For those who didn't come of age during this time, it hard to explain how influential this song and U2 were during the early 80's. Simply mammoth.
I love how cold and bleak the piano sounds. It perfectly matches the tone of the song. Edge's guitar textures are always incredible.
For years -- decades -- this song always made me think of coldness and winter. I don't think it was the video, or at least it wasn't *only* the video. I think it's just like you said, the sound of the music evokes "cold".
This is their first big US hit. It was all over MTV in the 80s.
My favorite song from U2. I used to dance to this song every weekend at the club. There was a cover band and they always performed this song. Good times, good memories
one of my favorite u2 songs. The gutair solo is amazing and one of the greatest of all time!
The UNFORGETTABLE FIRE 🔥...so haunting and atmospheric. Bands weren't making music like this except them back then. It's one of those songs that always brings out the tears.
Yes. It’s one of my favorite songs from U2. Stories For Boys, Bad, A Sort Of Homecoming, and Another Time, Another Place are great songs too.
This song is actually off the album "War", and "The Unforgettable Fire" came out the following year, which contains one of my favorite U2 songs, "Wire".
@@centuryrox I think he's recommending that they check out the song
@@centuryrox - October, War then Boy (In that order) are my favorites.
After War it seemed as though U2 had to make everything political.
The first side of October (to me) is U2 at their peak although War is a better overall album.
At this stage I'd call them good postpunk. I love that vibe.
This song is from their 3rd LP War. The entire thing is fantastic. On my list of top 5 LPs of all time.
I agree, also Sunday Bloody Sunday on the War LP is one of my favourite songs of all time.
Except for the song “Red Light.” That song has to be one of the worst in their catalog.
I only like Boy, War, Unforgettable Fire and Red Rock live anything after that i don't care much not even Joshua Tree.
@@Bulshitero you should really give Achtung Baby a try. It’s right up there with War for me as the best stuff they ever did.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 I didn’t think The Joshua Tree could be beaten or exceeded, but Achtung Baby is one of the best albums ever made imo.
This was the first song MTV played by U2 and I was changed forever. They really didn’t get popular with this album but it certainly set them on their path. This is in my top 3 favorite U2 songs. Nobody rocked a mullet like Bono!
I saw gloria on MTV
GLORIA was the first for me on MTV same hypnotic jam.
@@bustos1959 That’s my favorite song of all time by them!
I will Follow
I believe I’ve seen “I Will Follow “ and “Two Hearts Beat as One” on Empty V before this song.
Νext song from U2 has to be "I will follow". Great reaction, keep up the good work! All love from Greece!
love that song. they also need to do desire and unforgettable fire
Lyrical meaning refers to the movement for solidarity lead by Lech Walesa in Poland. After this was recorded, Poland announced they would abolish martial law, coincidentally on New Year's Day, 1983.
YOUR CONFUSED
@@danreed5171 Did not your mother ever teach you not to provide negative accusations without providing positive solutions? So superhero, you tell me mr knowitall, what do the lyrics mean?
@@teamdata robust I like it.......It is a love song.....He is explaining in powerful war terms, his love for pamela.......Bazookas and tanks cant stop him from coming home
@@danreed5171 yeah, not so much. he originally wrote the lyrics as a love song to an old elementary school flame. Then changed them all for Poland's solidarity
@@teamdata no way dude, Ray sManzerak

“Gloria” should be next. I love young U2.
Live version at Red Rocks :)
My absolute favorite song by them!
Me too actually October is my favorite album by them... but I love the first 7 enormously...Gloria is so good!!!°
YES, PLEEEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEEE!!!
The lyrics, in fact, refer to the persecuted leader of the Polish Solidarity movement, Lech Walesa. Coincidentally, after the song was released Poland's Communist government announced that they would abolish martial law.
In 1980 the Solidarity movement in Poland, under the leadership of future Nobel Peace Prize winner and president Lech Walesa, challenged the oppressive rule of the Polish government. In December 1981, the Solidarity movement was outlawed and Walesa, together with the other leaders of the movement, was arrested and put in jail.
It is believed that "New Year’s Day" initially started out as a love song, dedicated to Bono’s high-school sweetheart, Ali, whom he had recently married, but this changed.
Bono told the Rolling Stone in 2012 that he made the lyrics up on the spot, as he often does. He said, "We improvise, and the things that came out; I let them come out."
"I must have been thinking about Lech Walesa being interned. Then, when we'd recorded the song, they announced that martial law would be lifted in Poland on New Year's Day. Incredible."
Probably my favorite song of all time. The musicality of it, the lyrics, the message. "So we're told this is the Golden Age, and gold is the reason for the wars we wage..." Oh! this is the radio edit! There is another verse. For me, the theme was that we look to New Years Day for change, but it often is simply a continuation of the status quo. The 80's were a huge time of political awakening.
Yes, I always forget that the video is the short version! I'm so used to the full version. [Edit: And by cutting out that verse, they short-changed us of more of Bono's soaring vocals. Not a good trade-off.]
Such a bummer. That's the best part of the song, in my opinion. I love that line.
Yes. Me too. Its so haunting and beautiful at the same time. I remember liking it when I heard it in ‘83 I was about 6.
Early U2 is really the best U2. Check out the live version of 'Bad' from the Live Aid concert in 1985 and watch the exact moment U2 went from an Irish post-punk band to a mid-to-late-80s supergroup.
for the most part, I agree. love the passion and kind of "rawness" to a lot of the early stuff.
yes yes yes please!
The Live Aid version is so burned up, I lately went back to the studio version, better, great, remember why I love this song again.
Prior to Live Aid, U2 were more than just an 'Irish post punk band' - in Europe at least. Your comment is a little disrespectful.
Early U2 is by far my favorite
my all time favorite U2 song, I try every year to make sure it's the first song I listen to every January 1st.
Yeah, U2 had a refreshingly minimalist, atmospheric approach to rock & roll, especially the Edge's guitar playing. It was influential.
Hi together, my name is Thorsten and I´m from Germany. I listened to U2´s music from their eraly days. This song I understood in this way, that in first world war there was a story, that british sondiers and german soldiers had fire breaks at the front on New years day and also that christmas before. In these breakes some soldiers start to sing and the other side of the troops started to sing with the "enemy" these moments it happened, that they played soccer after singing, they gave each other presents. A lot of soldiers may have thoughts to their loved family and girlfriends or wifes. So I think these pictures have been chosen for this song, This song to me sounds kind of melodramatic and is full of desire.
When U2 were pups, just when their rocketship was blasting into the universe.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Two Hearts Beat as One" and "I Will Follow"!!
They've done at least 2 of those songs already.
@@1989NickyD - Nah, they've done post-War songs already but this is the first one from any of their first three albums.
- "I Will Follow", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Two Hearts Beat as One", "Gloria", "I Threw a Rock Through a Window",..
I prefer the earlier U2 to their self-conscious post-War material.
@@johnstjohn6658 The comment I was responding to has been edited. It originally included 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' and 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. They have already reacted to both of those songs.
This album ("War") was their big breakout. It was released my freshman year at college and was played everywhere you went on campus - it was hugely popular
I keep hearing people putting U2 down lately (since the iTunes fiasco), but those people need to shut up and listen to some of their songs like this to remember why they were, at one time, the biggest rock band in the world.
The song came out in the middle of the Cold War. People in those days were very concerned of nuclear war.
This video was all over MTV back in the early 80s when I was in high school. Great song.
This is a very young U2
Sorta, they'd been together for seven years at this point.
About war pictures: You must see, WW II was just about 36 years over in 1981. That's like the span from 2022 to 1986.
This song was written. When their country was at war.
And it's some of their earliest stuff. It wasnt until the 80s that their sound changed starting with there. Album called the Joshua Tree.which began thier signature sound you come to know
And so we are told, this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
Saw U2 at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1984, I originally went to see Billy Bragg but U2 were brill in their day.
Greatest night driving song in existence (and probably the best song in U2's catalog).
Another is “Black Metallic” by Catherine Wheel. Give it a try.
Drove across many a mountain with this playing.
Yessss!!!!!
Yes or "Big log" by Robert Plant. One of my favorite driving songs.
My two go to songs for driving the hilly twisties just to drive were Barracuda and Pinball Wizard (Elton John's version).
Lex's intuitive feel is perfect for Eastern Bloc Soviet controlled Poland.
In the album version, I love these lines : And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Missing in the single version
Then there’s the Club mix version song with Two Heats.
One of my favorite b-sides of this era is Treasure (Whatever Happened to Pete Chop) (or is it Pete the Chop?)
Anyway. It’s try the video to the single version doesn’t do justice to the full album version.
that verse is a bit weak, like an afterthought
I like the idea of comparing this to brutalist architecture. Makes perfect sense.
War...an absolute must have album....and in my opinion, the creative peak of the band.
Excellent driving song. Don’t overthink it and get lost in the sauce
U2 RULES.... more albums sold than the BEATLES!!!!!!!!!!!
I miss this era of U2. I miss it so much. Then again I'm old
This and Sunday Bloody Sunday are my favorite songs by U2.
The war footage is from the eastern front, probably Stalingrad, where the Soviet army eventually encircled the Germans.
What a great band U2 are. Even in the punk rock era and the new romantics they just stood out as a great band. Try With or without you or Where the streets have no name.
WOW!!!! Brutalist Architecture!!!!!! You’re right Lex. Exactly what this sounds like.
IMO this is their best album ever. They had been together long enough to gel and figure out some of their iconic sound, but still had that rough edge.
It is about Polish Solidarity(Solidarnost) movement,Leh Valensa
BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE?
Lex, you just won my heart.
Bono (singer) and the Edge (guitarist) were inspired to start the band after seeing the Clash in Dublin
This brings back memories. I'm 51 now, and haven't heard this since I was in my teens. I still know ALL the lyrics. Brilliant album.
My favorite U2 song
Lex with the architecture comparison!!! That is some out-of-the-box thinking...Dude...!
Bono is the bard. His lyrics are very much on the poetic side. So you'll get lyrics like "I will be with you again". I listen to this song every New Years Day because really, nothing changes from Dec. 31st to Jan 1st does it. Love the description of it as "brutalist". Please react to U2's "Drowning Man". You'll like this one. To me it's one of their best songs. Thanks.
The video is the shortened single version that cuts out the last verse and shortens the end with the repeating I will be with you again . It leaves out "And so we're told this is the golden aga, and gold is the reason for the wards we wage" (among other words). I recommend checking out the full length version of the song, it's better than the single IMO.
One of their top 3 albums. "Brutalist" is a good way to put it. Starkly beautiful and haunting.
This song was released somewhere around 1983 and it sounds so much ahead of its time.
Early '83.
@@floorticket Thanks
For young men in the early '80s World War II was still heavily influential on how people looked at the world
Welcome to 1983, Brad & Lex! High school music for me! ~ Jenn-X 🎸
"I Will Follow" and "The Unforgettable Fire"!
one of my absolute favourite songs from the 80s
This is from way back, when U2 was... good.
True song nothing changes on new years day
Great great song. U2 is a band with heart. One of the best bands ever. More U2 please!
This is the shorter (single) version. The longer version has another verse.
And that last verse is fantastic.
That Bass is 🔥🔥🔥
U2?!!!! Oh, this journey is gonna be good- always classic.
The song that started u2 craze. Never got them, but shut my mouth they are a notable band
Excellent song by U2 🙏🏽✌🏽♥️
Great song i love u2 80s stuff
This is their first hit in America thanks to the advent of MTV. I wish they played more like this.
New Wave. Before Bono became the world’s largest #2.
This one still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
This is very early U2. Post-punk/new wave, which always has good bass guitars and dancy beats. They are one of the best alternative rock bands ever from 'late '70s to '00s. Very long career. Also influenced many alternative rock bands in the future like Coldplay, Interpol, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, The Killers and others. Need to do more U2! Also this video seems edited, missing an extra part of the song. But its ok still a great song and video! I think its about the Cold War which was common to sing about back then and U2 is very political in a lot of their music. Happy sounding music but dark topics. Also see bands like Killing Joke, Joy Division, The Killers, Interpol, Sioxsee and The Banshees , The Cure, Bloc Party, Psychedelic Furs, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, and others. Like older U2.
One of U2's best songs ever! Great job guys!
You both are truly endearing....
Next....Radiohead - Where I End And You Begin | Radiohead | From The Basement
With this song being about Solidarity starting to come into place in Warsaw after decades of communist oppression, Lex perfectly described the architecture behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Bland, colorless, cold and more like prisons than homes - or even apartments - it was so depressing.
I'm guessing Lex knows a bit about architecture.
Song still gives me goosebumps almost 40 yrs later. Brutal is a good word. Beautiful at the same time. This was only radio version. The full song much better.
Old skool U2 ! As good now as it was then
Such an effen cool song.. it's my FAVORITE from U2 --- the video is great, the music just pounds my soul. Love it.
Brutalist architecture? Wow, Lex surprised me! The quick of that is bunker, specifically, concrete bunker. If you've ever seen a large multistory building that looks like it's supposed to be a bunker, chances are great you've seen Brutalist Architecture. "New Year's Day" was U2's breakthrough hit back in 1983. Check out some clips from their Red Rocks concert on their War tour. Fire!!!
Also do desire, i will follow, the unforgettable fire etc.
With the album's Joshua tree and achtung baby u2 became the world's most popular band.
Exit, refugee, trip through your wire, MLK, Hawkmoon 269.
It’s useful to remember no other band had sounded like this before. Ever.
Video was from time before they made good videos. I remember seeing it on old show called Night Tracks. Not all of us had cable or streaming yet. This is from around 1982. Great song though.
Ppl love hating on U2 but they were so ahead of their time.
What an amazing song 🤘🎸
The Edge!!!! People who think they know rock can say what they want about Edge But The musician changed the game!!!! You can thank Edge for Rage against the machine and many other bands
This is my friends mug
U2 chose the idea of the snow and white flag as symbolic surrendering. With the album war the entire theme was surrender without a fight.
The Edge has one of the most distinct guitar sounds around. He really set U2 apart from other bands of time.
The missing verse! "So we're told this is the golden age / When gold is the reason for the wars we wage / I want to be with you, be with you night and day / But nothing changes on New Year's Day". The radio cut makes sense considering the length of the song I guess. IIRC, the Polish communist government had announced an amnesty of some sort for solidarity leaders, etc. set for New Year's Day (maybe 1983?) but then they went through with it kind of like you'd expect a communist dictatorship to follow through. I've always assumed that the song is from Lech Walesa's (look it up!) PoV in prison. Like an imagined love letter to his wife or something. But it could be a lot broader than that and also make sense.
I love that song. It sounds so 80s. When I heard "Clocks" by Coldplay for the first time I realized that they must have heard some U2 songs before.
Edge is a great guitarist with a great solo in this sad song about war ..
Interesting choice for the war footage in the video. Got the Russian front in WW2 with the T-34 tanks rolling through the snow...NICE!!
U2 is DEEP.
My fav U2 song. Very revolutionary sound for people when it came on MTV in the early 80's.
You might react to "Stay, faraway so close". According to Bono it is one of the most underrated songs in the u2 repertoire
Want really incredible U2, watch their Live Aid performance of "Bad." Many consider as great as Queen's Live Aid performance. Also, check out U2 with BB King - When Love Comes to Town.
That is probably my favorite live U2 song. My favorite recorded song is "Red Hill Mining Town", and I wish more people would react to that one. It's one of the best vocal performances in rock history, IMO.
Bad (live) should be next. Either from Live Aid or Wide Awake in America.
