- Matamuhuri River a river that originates at 21°14'N and 92'36'E, only 1° to the north and 1° to the east of the source of the sangu river in the ranges of hills that divide Arakan from Chittagong. Matamuhuri is the Bangla version of the Magh name Mamuri. Like the Sangu, this river also flows northwest in the Hill Tracts and enters Cox's Bazar district from the east. Flowing west it falls into the bay of bengal at 21°45'N and 91°57'E forming a broad delta at its mouth extending from Bhola Khal to Khuta Khali. The delta is of the same character as the Sundarban, consisting of groups of islets intersected by a network of tidal creeks and covered by mangrove vegetation. The entire area has been brought under cultivation by erecting embankments. The principal upazila adjoining this river is Chakaria. The length of the river is about 287 km.
মাতামুহুরী নদী বাংলাদেশ ও মায়ানমারের আরাকানের একটি আন্তঃসীমান্ত নদী। সর্পিলাকার এ নদীটি বাংলাদেশের বান্দরবান ও কক্সবাজার জেলায় অবস্থিত। এর মোট দৈর্ঘ্য প্রায় ২৮৭ কিলোমিটার। বাংলাদেশ অংশের দৈর্ঘ্য প্রায় ১৪৬ কিলোমিটার, গড় প্রস্থ ১৫৪ মিটার। মারমা ভাষায় এই নদীটির নাম মামুরি।
মাতামুহুরী পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের উত্তর-পশ্চিম দিকে আলীকদম ও লামা উপজেলার মধ্য দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হয়ে পূর্ব দিক দিয়ে কক্সবাজার জেলায় প্রবেশ করে বঙ্গোপসাগরে পতিত হয়েছে। বঙ্গোপসাগরে মাতামুহুরীর মোহনায় একটি চওড়া বদ্বীপের সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। এটি ভোলাখাল থেকে খুটাখালি পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত। বদ্বীপটি সুন্দরবনের বৈশিষ্ট্যধারী এবং জালের মতো ছড়ানো খাঁড়ি আর গরান বনের আচ্ছাদনসহ ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র দ্বীপ নিয়ে গঠিত। মাতামুহুরী নদীর অববাহিকার প্রকল্প হচ্ছে ‘মাতামুহুরী সেচ প্রকল্প’। এখানে বাঁধ নির্মাণের মাধ্যমে সমগ্র এলাকা চাষাবাদের অধীনে আনা হয়েছে। সমুদ্রের লবণাক্ত পানি সংগ্রহের প্রয়োজনে এ নদীর সঙ্গে বেশ কিছু কৃত্রিম খাল সংযুক্ত করা হয়েছে। এই নদীর তীরে চকরিয়া পৌরসভা, লামা পৌরসভা, ঘানাশ্যামবাজার, আলিকদম বাজার ও মানিকপুর বাজার অবস্থিত। নদীটিতে বন্যানিয়ন্ত্রণ বাঁধ আছে বাঁতীরে ১৭.৫০ এবং ডানতীরে ৩৩ কিলোমিটার।
বামু খাল, পোপা অথবা বোপা ছড়া, লামা ছড়া, ইয়াংচি খাল এ নদীর অন্যতম উপনদী। বামু খাল লামা উপজেলার সারিয়া ইউনিয়নের পাহাড়ি এলাকা হতে উৎপত্তি লাভ করে লামাবাজারের কাছে মাতামুহুরী নদীতে পতিত হয়েছে। আলীকদম উপজেলার চোখং ইউনিয়নের মানগু হতে লামা ছড়া এবং লামা ইউনিয়নের নাখং হতে পোপা/বোপা ছড়া উৎপত্তি লাভ করে দরদরিতে এসে মিলিত হয়েছে এবং এই যৌথ ধারা মাতামুহুরী নদীতে নিপতিত হয়েছে। নদীটির ভাটির অঞ্চল জোয়ারভাটার প্রভাবে প্রভাবিত।

As we destruct the nature it actually jeopardizes our own life at the end. As human contributes towards environment pollution, green house effects or climate change, it brings down our own existence at risk.
Climate change is real throughout the world. Despite of not being a mass industrial country, Bangladesh is not out of concern from this rising issue. Due to its unique geographic, socioeconomic, and physical characteristics, the country is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Sea level rise, frequent storms and cyclones, less monsoon period, erosion, landslides, flooding and salinization are already occurring in our country. According to National Geographic, Bangladesh is one the most vulnerable nations to the impacts of climate change as it is located on the Tropic of Cancer and receives fairly direct radiation throughout the year and maintains relatively high temperature.
Though Bangladesh is a small and densely populated country, it is the home of 1952 species of invertebrates, 653 fish, 50 amphibians, 147 reptiles, 566 birds, and 127 mammalian species of which many of them are globally threatened. The continuous pressure of increasing population, climate and biophysical changes, lack of awareness, lack of enforcement and the policy and information gap is threatening their existence and causing their habitat degradation and fragmentation. Bangladesh is a riparian country, consisting of more than 230 large and small rivers. But most of these rivers are now choked by the pollution caused by mainly human intervention. Although 97% of the total population has access to water, the quality of water is always questionable (WHO, 2018).
We firmly believe that though we are the first generation to be aware of the importance of environmental conservation, we might be the last one too to take steps for its protection. Our mission is to create a platform as information booth that helps people around the world to know massively about the various phenomena of the environment of Bangladesh. We are aiming to create awareness among people regarding conservation of nature through our articles and work as a support for the government and other NGOs with necessary information.
