  • In this Derby then and now we are standing outside Derby Museum & Art Gallery on The Strand looking north to Bold Lane. In this old photograph from 1976 the road had collapsed where Sadler Gate Bridge is located. Sadler gate bridge was at the bottom end of Sadler Gate where it meets the Strand, Cheapside and Bold Lane. The bridge referred to in the street name was one which had been built over the old Markeaton Brook, which was rebuilt by William Strutt in 1786.
It disappeared during the work which was carried out to culvert the brook in the late 19th century. This work led to the construction of a new street, which was called the Strand.
Originally, the bridge gave access from the town centre across Markeaton Brook to Cheapside and beyond. The structure was not actually demolished when the brook was culverted and the road was created.
In the old photograph you can see Allsops garage, with an old Mail Coach from the 1800' on the roof. Mr Allsop of Allsop Garage got the idea of putting it on his roof when he saw a French garage with a car exhibited on its roof. When it was acquired it had no colour left, but Mr Allsop had it painted crimson and yellow. When the garage was demolished it was looked after by red House Stable at Darley Dale and has been fully restored.
In the 2024 view you can see the Electric Daisy community garden and modern buildings that have replaced the old garage.
Here is a Google Streetview of the "Sadler gate bridge" :

You can see the sign half way up Number 2 Sadler gate.
Do you have any memories of this area ?

"A truly unique way to see changes in time using two perfectly lined up images, one old & one new." Best viewed on a large screen in full screen mode.
Derby Past & Present - in fading Photographs.
High quality resolution fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point. Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!
The presentations you can see here are the result of many hours of work put in by myself ensuring that the old and new photographs line up precisely, I don't publish any if I'm not 100% happy with the match.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime Im publishing then on my CZcams channel like this one.
Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the CZcams app?
