Smallmouth Bass Fishing the Upper Potomac (Early Fall on Big Slackwater)

- It was only an hour ride from home to the ramp at Big Slackwater on the upper Potomac River for some early fall bass fishing with my son Austin. There is nothing like than getting kids fishing and catching some feisty smallmouth and even a decent bonus largemouth bass made it that much better. It was a grind to find the bites and the boat traffic was tough, but the Pelican paired with the little 2.5hp Suzuki got us to the fish we were looking for.

Hi Cornell, I have a modification you might be interested in. I replaced the weight on a drop shot with a weighted bait such as a ned rig, a shakey head or a weighted worm or anything that stays on the bottom. Now there’s a bait for bottom fishing and a bait for suspended bass depending on where you set up the drop shot bait. I caught one this afternoon on the bait up the line. Let me know what you think!!

That's awesome! It was cool running into you out there. Looks like we walked out right after that last smallie. We ended up snagging some bluegill and Rock bass after you headed out. What type of drop shot weight do you use out there? We always get snagged up so curious what you use for that rocky bottom. You also confirmed what I was wondering about that log pile! Knew there had to be some nice fish over there. Love this videos man! Hope to run into you guys out there again soon!
Thanks Brandon. Cool running into you guys too. I never went heavier than 1/8 ounce. You may need go go heavier if there is more current, wind or if you use a bulkier bait, but the lightest you can get away with will definitely minimize the snags. Tear drop or round in the rocks is a must BTW.
