I rememember the first albumn I heard him play on. It was entitled Farthers and Sons. That album featured the father and son combination of Mr. Von and Chico Freeman. And Mr. Ellis Marasalis and Branford and Wynton. It was the first time I sat down to listen to a Jazz record. I remember the selection ' A joy forever' played by the Marsalis family. And it has been indeed a joy to witness Mr. Marsalis's long absolutely stunning career and his enormous contribution to the artform. His accomplishments speaks most eloquently on his behalf.
When your drummer knows your music without looking at the page........ WOW. Obed is incredible at playing all the nuaunces and emotions for every part of the ensemble colors. I met him in cuba and watching and listening to him is like a lesson on KNOWING EVERY PART OF YOUR MUSIC. One band.... ONE SOUND. ONE LOVE . ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.
Echoes of tradition, in a perfect groove, resonate in today's times with today's soloists. In "That Dance We Do That You Love To", for example, Abdias Armenteros and Chris Crenshaw remind me of how Sidney Bechet and Dickie Wells might express themselves today. Music to enjoy with an incredible and perfectly assembled orchestra.

Thank you. I have been to the last two Newport Jazz Festivals and Christian McBride really has the jazz that is fresh and exciting and not so handcuffed to pretty notes and the past. Plus, Marsalis has disrespected decades of jazz that didn't fit into his narrow definition of the genre, great Black music by people in the 1970s like Sam Rivers, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and many others.
