I've lived in Shelbyville, Tennessee for over 25 years. Had no idea about either Dr. Key or Jim until i came across this doc some time ago. I'm now almost 41. No one I've ever met around here, no matter the age, has heard of them either (of the folks I've asked, that is). Dr Key is indeed buried in the cemetery on Lane Parkway, the grave is fairly easy to find. Jim is buried at the back of someone's property on the left almost as soon as you make the turn onto Himesville Rd from Old Tullahoma Highway. If you pass New Hope Rd you've gone too far (it's the road right before, assuming you're coming from Shelbyville). Thank you, Mr. Skinner, for bringing to life this grand tale once again. God Bless You.
Edit: Also, Shelbyville Is the "Walking Horse capital of the world". Not sure where the race horse info came from, but it's incorrect.

I am one. Not as significant as actual people who have the aura surrounding them. I have rescued dozens of stray cats, where most of them have found their way to me. Along with their kittens, and being pregnant. I taught one of our dogs canine sign language. Animals at zoos have come up to me where a zoo worker mentioned that certain animals have never gone up to the fence line to interact or visit with human visitors. I visited a neighbor once, where I encountered her pet cat. The neighbor said the cat dislikes strangers coming into the house. I sat down, and the cat came over to me, jumped in my lap and sat down..lol. I told my neighbor when I first came in the house, I saw the cat and told her she was so pretty, maybe nobody has ever told her before. ;)

I'm very familiar with this true amazing story!
It brings a tear to me glass eye...arrghhh! ")
We just don't live in a world where these kind of incredible stories are possible. Not slavery obviously, but the story where an unlikely bond between a horse and a poor man with all odds against him and how they lifted each other up and in doing so lifted up the entire nation at a time when the country was sorely in need of a wonderful heartfelt story which appealed to all people of all classes and backgrounds.
These were the precursor to movies and movie stars, only this story has real people, real history and an incredible real story the likes of which Hellywood is incapable of making these days, and at a time when the nation feels as though it could crack open and destroy itself at any moment.
Not so long ago, when I was a boy in the mid 60's children were still allowed to be CHILDREN!! Adults didn't act like lunatics freaking out because someone voted for a person someone else doesn't like, and they have no idea why they don't like him, they're told not to like him and therefore they dislike him!
I watched "Herbie The Love Bug" at the theater in Sudbury Ontario one summer with my older brother while we were spending the summer with our Unkie Frank! Unkie Frank was Dad's buddy from WWII. They both served aboard the carrier HMS Illustrious during the war, and both fought through horrific battles.
You would think that would have given them an excuse to be angry and out of control at the world, but the exact opposite was true. They knew the the true cost of freedom, they somehow managed to live through the war floating in a huge tin can thousands of miles from friendly shores and having bombs dumped on them from above thanks to the Luftwaffe!
They knew "freedom" was not "free" They knew the cost of freedom was blood! And so instead of being bitter and enraged, instead of going on pills and booze, they embraced life, they were peace loving men, and both tremendously powerful, very well built and not from weight lifting, rather, from hard manual labour.
They loved life they helped anyone in need, they sacrificed for their families, and were the very best roll model any child could even hope for.
There were adults at that movie, the theater was packed. Kids and adults alike laughed and had a great time watching that family movie.
No sex, no explosions, no foul language, no gratuitous nudity etc etc.
We went back to that theater a week later and watched a Western with my favorite actor Clint Eastwood! "Joe Kid" was an awesome movie!
Again, young and old were there together and had a great time watching that great western!
When I was a boy Disney was pumping out all kinds of classics! Jungle Book, Snow White, Pinocchio etc. At Christmas it was all a kid could take trying to keep up with all the different Christmas movies - Mickey's Christmas, remember Scrooge McDuck? Charlie Brown's Christmas is still one of my all time favorites and at 57 years old I will watch them ALL again!
Flintstones have two Christmas specials from that era, then those awesome claymation movies! "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town" with Mickey Rooney doing the voice of Kriss Kringle! Rudolf, Frosty, Scrooge cartoon version...
My all time favorite movie bar none is still "A Christmas Carol" with Alastair Sim!
    Wow...talk about your rabbit hole!
I guess my point is this story reminded me of a simpler time when people had a real appreciation for the simpler things in life.
When people cared about each other, when boys opened doors for ladies and had manners. Where you didn't lock your house or your car, and when movies had real stories and touched our hearts.
We've changed radically in just the 5 decades since I was a small boy growing up in Toronto. Today people are "outraged" and the smallest, most inconsequential thing sets folks off on violent tangents, and everybody's is gonna tear someone apart, and every second word is an F Bomb. Movies have no story, no content beyond unrealistic fights and explosions.
Today we're witness to an actual presidential coup attempt in the U.S.A.!!?? When one party lost an election, they used to spend the four year term licking their wounds and trying to come up with a better platform and be ready for the next election!
Today you just keep inventing lies and accusations and hope something sticks so you can steal the office!
We see the U.N. created the most deadly, wicked, deceitful Trojan Horse in human history called the European Union and they used it to destroy Europe and Scandinavia! This is undone everything millions upon millions upon millions fought and died for! My father and his brothers did not risk their lives and watch their brothers at arms get blown to pieces literally, so some elite arrogant self entitled monster could undo all that sacrifice and turn Europe over to Islam!
This isn't an attack on Muslims by the way, it's an attack on the elite globalists who are intentionally destroying Europe, and Western Society so they can finally realise their "One World Order"! George Bush Sr said that term over 200 times during his four year term "New World Order"
    Anyway, I'll stop now!
Awesome story, I do enjoy your narrative and stories, thank you for bringing me back!!

Very well said and so true !
When I was 8 we lived Up State New York in the mountains. I had to push a chair to stand on to use a wooden telephone, were you picked up the black ear piece and you'd have to wind up on the handle that was on the side of the phone then talk to an operator.
We had a big round washing machine with a wringer on top. Have things changed over the years. Back then no one pulled 'race cards', kids didn't shoot kids at schools, no guns in churches. There weren't drug dealers and gangs like today.
But you have to learn to take the good with the bad to a point I guess. Change will always happen and one has to keep up or be left behind.
Going to the 'movies' when I was a kid was a big deal like you said in your comment. We went out to play & knew when the street lights came on we needed to go in, our parents knew where we were.
I'm not saying back 'then' was 'better' it just was different. When I visited my grandfather on his farm I had chores and did them happily.
I served in the Army & I know freedom isn't free. Then you see the way over paid 'knee takers'...If they don't like the country they are free to move.
I got to take care of cows and chickens and horses while on the farm and I think I'll always luv animals maybe a bit more than most folks, animals keep it real, where some folks who knows what they might be up too.
We just have to truck unward, be kind to folks and animals alike and treat others the way we would want to be treated till out last train stop comes and the good Lord takes us home.
Animals are beyond 'cool', they could care less about silly skin colour stuff and greed, they just want to be treated with love and kindness and the respect they more then deserve and in turn they will love you back.

*WONDERFUL, Jerry, as always!* I really love watching your videos for us. I'm moving up to age 70 shortly and I remember many of these actors in black and white (which is what all we had on our TVs, to you young-uns!) and your knowledge about all things Hollywood is amazing! Thank you again, Jerry, for this particular video. Big love to you, sir!

Once again a fantastic story by Mr Skinner, been with Jerry for years now and still my favourite channel, often repeating a video to help me rest.
It is understood by tests done later on in life the horse could tell the slight differences in Dr Keys voice as he approached the correct letters or numbers to choose. Whilst this was unknown to Dr Keys at the time nor did he realise his tones slightly changed in anticipation of the correct letter
umber chosen, tests carried out with alternatives the horse did not get any answers correct. This is when Dr Keys stopped. But still incredibly intelligent for any animal.

I had heard about this story but was so glad to see that you, Jerry, made a video of it because I knew you would get more of the details and put it all together beautifully!
Thank you! It's such a lovely story but I wonder why so many of William's wives died young! How sad!

How is it that I grew up watching Mr. Ed, and yet never heard this remarkable story? This story could be the next blockbuster! A TRUE story about how a slave gained an education, made a fortune, rescued his former owners, who had been kind to him, and changed how an entire generation - and generations to come would treat animals. This true story could change our lives today, maybe teach us to treat each other with kindness.

This is an incredible story of kindness to animals and the love they return to their human. I’ve never heard of this horse until this day, thank you for telling this story. The next step of honoring this horse and his human is to make a movie of this incredible story! Needs to be made! ❤️❤️
