    I'm surprised you titled this video "The ACCIDENTAL History of the Zombie Genre" without referencing how the zombie became a lot more widespread due to the film being in the public domain because of an accidental lack of copyright indication after changing the title from 'Night of the Flesh Eaters' to 'Night of the Living Dead'.

    It is widely believed by many historians that the word *Zombie* is derived from the (Kikongo word Nzambi), which means a ''spirit of a deceased person'' Or the (Haitian Creole) word ''Zonbi'' which means a person who died and was somehow brought back to life without speech or free will.

    Hitchcock created the template for what became the "zombie movie" with The Birds. Put a disparate cast of characters in one location, provide an existential threat trying to claw it's way in, and watch the personalities collide with each other under the stress. Romero took that, and made it his own.

    I think,George R. Romeros zombies could establish this frightening feeling because they were not really different from us. Walking dead for example fails this,as it establishes a zombie that is more "brainless". For the audience it`s nothing more,then a monster,that looks a little bit human. But that`s it. After a while,the monster isn`t frightening anymore,because we see something,from that we automatically reesume,that it can`t be real. But the Romero Zombie frightens us constantly,by showing us:
    THIS.
    IS.
    YOU.
    They go to normal places,that they liked before they died. Restaurant or malls. They use shovels,stones and more.
    But mostly,they *behave* like us. Like that scene,from Night of the living Dead,when a zombie gets a piece of meat. Some other zombies follow him,in attempt to steal it from him. That`s a VERY human thing. Not exactly,but the concept is really human.

    • @JcBravo8
      @JcBravo8 Před 4 lety +3

      Paul S I’d argue that Walking Dead’s zombies are the setting not the monster. They’re omnipresent, that threat you know is there and will always be there. You can be fighting the Governor or Negan or even yourselves - and the Walkers will still be there. That’s the horror.

    • @nitsuagaming6121

    Regarding Dawn of the Dead, while I see that you allude to it, you might have considered more emphasis on why Romero chose the Mall as the backdrop. Yes it is a place of survival, but Romero was also making a clear social comment on consumerism and greed.

    • @Jimmyduudah
      @Jimmyduudah Před 7 lety +8

      That and the fact Romero had a friend who owned the mall, giving him access to a great location, cheaply. You could argue the mall was chosen as a backdrop by chance and to save on budget, as much as Romero making a clear social comment on consumerism. In fact, Romero has come out and said he had no direct intention to make a social commentary when filming Dawn of the Dead. However a good script will contain hidden or even unintended meaning/nuance.

    Brilliant. "Night of the Living Dead" is one of my favorite movies of all time. Duane Jones is fantastic, and I always saw it more as a culture piece/ racism allegory. The ending is soul crushing, yet so so important. This may sound ludicrous, but I always thought (although with in the confines of the characters in the house racism isn't much of an issue) that the undead are really the only people that don't care about the color of one's skin. The fact that Romero made the hero, the main character, the only leveled headed person in the film a black man in 1968 is incredible. The ending hit me so much that I was 99% sure that the ending to "Get Out" would end the same way. I love that movie as well, because it's an amazing meta horror film as well as a satire on society in general.
    Anyway, I love your work. I try to watch your videos as they come out, but I've recently been watching some older videos. I can't get enough. You guys are fantastic.

    • @jthompson7175
      @jthompson7175 Před 4 lety +1

      This is definitely a case where art can take on a new meaning when it's unleashed on the public. Duane Jones was hired because he was the best actor for the budget, but given how the movie plays out and the it had a black lead, it ended up taking on a new meaning and gave the movie more impact than it might have had before. I saw a recording of a stage version of NotLD on CZcams and they'd cast a white actor as Ben. It felt so wrong. And it's funny because the character wasn't written to be any specific race, but it ultimately became a huge part of the movie's identity.

    It's getting a 4K transfer and the missing 10 of footage that was deleted from the film before the original release and was long thought destroyed as been found and for over a year they've been restoring it and transferring it into 4K to be put back in the film ready for the rerelease 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Okay so, you kinda missed a few things on Haïtiens zombies and Baron Samedi (wich you butchered the prononciation in like, incredible way, it took me a moment to get it XD).
    Baron Samedi IS a god of death. But he isnt seen as a "benevolant" god. In fact, he is the "evil" one that tough sorcerer how to make zombies (go read account of haïtiens real zombies, its terrifying). His name and look actually really remind of plantation owner, and it is REALLY badly seen in haïti to "pray" the guy.
    Also, Duvalier (an haïtien dictator) actually dressed up as the Baron, and his troops were know to dig up graves on occasion. So yeah... Zombies are a real, deep scare in haïtien culture.

    I feel like Shaun of the Dead did justice for George A Romero.
    I haven’t seen any other zombie movie like his vision or any similar work to his.
    I can’t care for zombies today, they run, their cliché and very repetitive.
    George’s Dead movies will always will and have been the best zombie movies, I’ve ever seen.
    Also it did give the idea on the News on TV of a satellite that went to Venus, I think? Then crashed down and brought back Cosmic radiation.
    But it’s never stated, it’s more based on theory. So you never really know and it’s never focused ether.
    I love this. It’s unexplained horror that can’t be understood from the terrors of space.
    Why is the dead walking? Is it a punishment from a higher power? For the way we are and how we treat the world or ourselves?...is hell, full?
    I love these ideas of these films.
    I believe the humans are the real villains and the living dead are just...there.
    They have no intent on killing everyone. They are based on pure instinct, like a lion after Zebra. You don’t blame it because you know why they kill and eat.
    It’s the same with the zombies.
    They are just things that ruin your day. Like the inconvenience of everyday life itself.

    This is off topic but I guarantee Stranger Things Season 3 is going to have a zombie-like trope that imitates Dawn of the Dead. Noah Schnapp, when asked to use one word to describe the season, chose “spreading.” I think there will be a virus from the Upside Down that worked its way into the real world somehow (maybe through Dustin or Hopper since they inhaled that stuff that the Upside Down sprayed at them in the tunnels). I think the virus will spread and will end with an apocalyptic type showdown in the Starcourt Mall.

      renew1098 The Last Airbender was directed and written by an Indian man. I don't think that counts as whitewashing. It is definitely perplexing how the meant-to-represent-Inuit people are white and the meant-to-represent-Japanese people are more Indian, but it's not whitewashing per se. I would say its simply the failure to adhere to source material, just like the rest of the film.

      All the triggered alt-right needs to calm down. "White washing" has nothing to do with social justice, it just means taking media from foreign countries and westernizing it, its not always a bad thing to white-wash something.

    Since the modern understanding of zombie is nowhere close to the Haitian lore, can you still claim "whitewashing" especially since reanimation is not a strictly Haitian concept? No. Not really. There's one thing in common, dead people come back to life. And that's pretty much it.

    Blah, blah, fukin blah! I've recently watched WAY too many of these over-annalizations of the "deep meanings" behind movies. I understand the need to explore the human condition, but these endless, wordy videos just suck all of the fun out of the movies original intention...to entertain you for an hour and a half. Lighten up Francis.

      Kind of sounds like your the one that needs to lighten up, but hey that's just my opinion.
