  • The band Oasis was certainly a phenomenon. We all know the genius and accolades of Noel and Liam Gallagher. It's time to give credit to the original minds behind the Oasis sound and explain their history and how it all came to be. Rock on, Tony McCarroll. Your contribution is not forgotten by us.

Great video and I’m more than impressed with how you got yourself around the UK that’s dedication!
I’m a big fan of Oasis and of NG and LG but i’ve always felt their treatment of Tony McCarroll was just so wrong. I found my original copy of Definitely Maybe last month and my son who’s 15 and I have been listening to it non-stop in the car ever since. Not only is there nothing wrong with the drumming on that record, it is absolutely crucial to the record’s success. There is a lot of crap that has been spun around Tony that just shouldn’t be allowed to stand.
If you listen to the album Live By The Sea he plays really well all the way through. More to the point, Owen Morris is quoted in print as saying Tony had great timing..almost unnaturally good and he hit really hard and consistently.
That’s a very different story to the one that is spun since Tony was fired. It’s debatable as to whether he would’ve been right for WTSMG but I’ve always felt it was wrong of Noel to pretty much trash any career Tony might have had post Oasis by making him out to be damaged goods.
It’s clear Noel never liked Tony and perhaps because Tony was the only one in the band who was a father , he felt capable of standing up to him and obviously Noel never forgave him.
Noel should’ve just cited musical differences and given him a decent slice of the earnings and moved on, that would have been the honourable thing to do.
Either way if you like Definitely Maybe you have to accept that Tony was the right drummer for that record end of story. The drumming is solid,, he hits hard and he keeps it punk and it’s sold 8 million copies..
    I rest my case!

The city as a whole is changing fast and your documentary serves not only to remember a group of people at a certain point in time but also the places that formed the backbone to these people's story. It was bittersweet to see The Boardwalk mentioned. The Boardwalk, Hacienda, Roadhouse, Sankey's Soap, so on and so on all served to bring a certain appeal to the City only to now be replaced with soulless tower blocks in an unrelenting march to gentrify the place and line someone's pockets.

It’s funny. I grew up in the UK (Northern Ireland) 70s, 80’s and 90’s before moving to the US. But most people are totally unaware in America of the impact Oasis had both in Britain and abroad, but especially in Britain. They truly were a phenomenon. They will never be able to replicate it. They to me captured, or partly created, the essence of mid 90s pop culture in Britain. It’s sad that all good things have to come to an end, and it’s sad how oasis fell apart, almost like an invisible force was pushing against them. The mid 90s were probably the best time in my life and hearing certain oasis songs makes me yearn for those years again and I’m filled with melancholy

Liam should bring Tony Mac back on his 24 gigs. His compact drumming style held the early tunes together like glue. Gaps between songs can be key to letting through the instruments and vocals.

Perfect analysis.. I am a musician and i can see this. I dont even need to know any of them personally this is 100% agree with. And macaroll with the lazy swing. Thats EXACTLY what no other drummer has replicated.
Tony was a good guy.. I think problem is Tony was older and had a kid.. He was more mature, and noel couldnt manipulate him like he could the others. Plus lets say wheb you scared and and Noels things to hide in your own incompetence, its best to shift that problem onto someone else.. Noels 100% egotistic control freak psychopath and a bully... He probably wnated to be everytjig liam is.. And wishes he was liam aswell. Ive heard a thing about noel i hope isnt true... Something very serious and sick.
And i could see how their personalities would clash.. Tony wouldnt take shit from Noel and Noel wanted to slowly gain total control of the band. Noel was a dictator ego maniac that stole songs lol. Liam took them songs and turned them into Oasis.

@@SuperDavidGnomo I think Noel may have re-recorded some of the basslines, but I'm doubtful that he would have had time to re-record them all. I posted some notes on this a while back, hopefully this may be of interest. Also it might be useful to note the different versions of Definitely Maybe
      Version 1: Batchelor sessions
Recorded between 8th - 23rd January 1994 at Monnow Valley studio, Wales; Mix attempted between 24th - 27th January 1994 at Olympic Studios, London. Producer: Dave Batchelor. Engineered by Dave Scott. Unreleased.
      Version 2: Sawmills sessions
Recorded 24th February - 4th March 1994 at Sawmills Studios, Cornwall; Mixed on 7th-8th, 11th-13th, 16th-22nd, 24th-25th March 1994 at Eden Studios, London. Co-produced by Noel Gallagher and Mark Coyle. Engineered by Anjali Dutt. Unreleased, but the first mix of these sessions can be found on the Safety Masters set. A mix of Columbia from this session will be on the deluxe edition of Definitely Maybe.
Version 3 (released mix by Owen Morris)
Recordings from Monnow Valley (Slide Away), Sawmills (most of the album), Loco (some of Liam's vocals), Out of the Blue (Shakermaker) and elsewhere remixed by Owen Morris at Matrix Studios, London (2nd-5th May 1994) and mastered at Clear Studios, Manchester.
On whether Guigsy played bass on DM:
We don't have complete recording credits for every track on Definitely Maybe... but, putting two and two together from what is known, I think that Noel may have re-recorded some, but perhaps not all, of the basslines on the released version of the album. Rock 'n' Roll Star is a possibility. The Melody Maker article on the making of Definitely Maybe confirms that Rock 'n' Roll Star was one of the tracks that Owen Morris remixed from the Sawmills recording. And yet the original mixes of the Sawmills recording of the track (which can be heard on the Safety Copy of the Definitely Maybe Masters) feature a slightly different, less prominent bassline. I believe this is Guigsy's take.
My guess is that maybe when Owen Morris remixed Rock 'n' Roll Star and Columbia (at Loco Studios, 23-24th April 1994) he got Noel to re-record the bassline as well as re-recording Liam's lead vocals on Rock 'n' Roll Star (the album version uses a different vocal take than the original mixes on the safety masters).
Also, I'm not sure that Noel would have had time to re-record all the bass parts. As I understand it, by the time Owen Morris got on board, they were running out of time to finish the record and, after approving his work on Rock 'n' Roll Star and Columbia, they let him get on with remixing the remainder of the album whilst they were on tour. Noel mentions in the DM DVD documentary that whilst on tour they would receive mixes on cassette for approval. So I'm not sure how much time Noel would've had by that stage to re-record all of Guigsy's bass lines. I've put a recording timeline on this page, for reference.
I think that some confusion may have arisen due to how Owen Morris treated the basslines during mixing: "I put the bass guitar through a Mini Moog synthesiser and used the filter section to take all the top end off and just created a pure low sound… this was necessary and successful because it took away the hits of the notes and therefore hid the imprecise playing." Full interview here.
As a result the bass lines on many tracks are, deliberately, less clearly audible than they would've been before. Maybe this got misunderstood by Tony as Guigsy's basslines having been wiped completely...hence the bitter disagreement between them recounted in Tony's book. Or maybe he wrongly concluded that all Guigsy's bass lines had been re-done on the basis of hearing Morris's remix of Rock 'n' Roll Star? Just a theory though!

That's quite the discussion, because some great tunes certainly came from the Alan White days. The Zak Starkey days were a wash, with maybe a handful of good tunes at best. White was really smooth and expressive with his drum fills, which can be heard on tracks like "Stay Young". Starkey was more of a straight-forward thumper, like on "Layla". But Tony McCarroll was there when they had no particular sound and no hit songs. His style set the foundation for the first two albums, which are forever classics. Listen to the dance tunes Noel has been making this past year and see that he can definitely use Tony again.
