Approached Bobby as a 9yo for an autograph at Sydney airport after the race at Surfers 1991. Still have it, “All the best Luke, best wishes Bobby”. From then I was a fan. What a legend.
Bobby Rahal looks less like a championship-winning racing driver than anyone in history, but he could haul it. Can-Am, Formula 1, IndyCar...he was a beast.

I was a mechanic in Indy Lights and met Bobby at a party. He was the reason after his 1986 win that I fell in love with IndyCar racing. I said, “Bobby you’re the whole reason I’m here in this room tonight”. He said, “Really, did I meet your mother?” I pointed at the gap in my front teeth and over-bight like his and said “Jeez, I don’t know”. He laughed his ass off and somewhere in my old toolbox I have picture of me and Bobby Rahal smiling like long lost father and sone.

He likes single seater racing in general. He had F1 drivers and even the Late Murray Walker on the show, decades before DTS made F1 a thing in the US.
Letterman was one of the only normal nose

I meet Bobby at Gold Coast Australia 1998. He was just walking from one part of the pits to the othe. He stopped to talk. Even though he would have been busy as a owner/ Driver. He was the nicest person to talk too.

Closest I've come to see Bobby is at Texas Motor Speedway, he was hauling azz to his garage
Was standing on pit road with a group of people before the start of the Daytona 24 hour race. Kyle Petty, David Donahue and Hurley Haywood were nearby, as was Christian Fittipaldi. Bobby was at the center chatting with us, and said: "Excuse me one moment". He then turned around and gave the command to start the race. A moment I'll never forget.

David would later go on to become a co-owner of Bobby Rahal's Indy Car team. He still is to this day.
I remember that ad. I remember the Saab Drakken more than the woman.
The absolute King of Mid- Ohio. Was at his first Indy Car victory when he won the inaugural Cleveland Grand Prix. Sadly, Cleveland decided not to be on the Indy schedule as it was such a bother to rake in such large profits for the second poorest large city in America.
As of May 25, 2024, Bobby Rahal is STILL ALIVE.
