Still thinking about the pineapple scene from Only Yesterday

  • To avoid D*sney lawyers, I'm showing myself making pineapple fried rice instead of showing clips from the movie. Normally this dish is made with shrimp, but I omitted it because of a severe shellfish allergy.
Yes I know this has nothing to do with baseball. Yes I know I messed up the rice. Someone please buy me a rice cooker for my birthday.

That scene got to me hard because I never had any issues doing so in school, but got increasingly frustrated with how the teacher explained what was happening. Teachers are usually horribly incompetant at their jobs, even for explaining simple shit like pre-calculus math.

I didn't find this movie a slow burn, I loved every single delicate moment. It really captured those intense complicated emotions which bubble up when you're a child. But I very much enjoyed your take on the pineapple scene, and it's true...I always found it a comfort to see her happy-go-lucky adult face after the almost heart wrenching childhood scenes. It kind of ties a link between my own adult self now, with my sad and confused child self.

I agree. Every single second had me enthralled.
I guess I always do end up really enjoying stuff, only to learn later on it was intended for girls >=[

Love this scene especially the facial expressions of everyone's when tasting the pineapple...the drawing truly is lifelike....One of my favorite movies and watched it many times. After I became a parent, and watched again. I can understand more about what her parents did right and wrong to shape how she is as an adult. She has many good qualities as a little girl, who wants to be good and is a cheerful. If her parents could have seen her strengths in the artistic areas such as good writing and drawing and acting, and encouraged her in those areas, she would've found her passions/direction and become a confident woman sooner.
She felt insecure with her ability in math, even in her adulthood because most Asian parents emphasize on science rather than any other subjects. She is lucky to meet the country boy who is more mature but very similar to her so can appreciate/love her sparks.
It's a movie with such depth and warmth and beauty...truly a masterpiece.

it definitely plays differently watching as an adult (and a parent at that) than watching as a kid, both ways equally evocative and thought-provoking

Such a good reflection of the movie! I simply love only yesterday but I didn't quite get the pineapple scene and you explained so clearly... Now I see how this scene summarize the whole movie. How Taiko was that butterfly cocoon with that much potential, it was just about time.

Pineapple is best after serving as a garnish on the outside of baked ham (with a maraschino cherry in the center). After baking, it's sweet flavor now soaked in the salt and smoke cure, shines forth.

How... How could you like mangoes more than pineapples?
Every day, it's a mango. I have a two mango trees in my back yard and lemme tell you, I am tired of mangoes. I'd take pomegranates over mangoes at this point.

    • @V.U.4six
      @V.U.4six Před 3 lety

Are you implying you don’t care for pomegranates?
      Haha
It’s easy for me to get decent pineapple (it’s cut but left as a cylinder, less work and easier to tell if good usually)
And mangos are more of an occasional thing and it’s hard to pick a good one sometimes (or wait too long to eat by accident)

I've seen content of this quality for video essays about video games and live action films, but never for anime, where videos usually are straightforward reviews or recommendations. This coupled with the fact that you're talking about an anime like Only Yesterday and not something more popular like Attack on Titan or whatever, means there's no shot this video would have gotten lots of views. But I'm glad I found it and I encourage you to keep making stuff of this quality and nature, even if it will never get the views of something titled "X anime is a MASTERPIECE" or "Why you should watch the BEST anime of fall 2020".
