Does the Ezekiel Choke work No Gi? (Punch Choke 2020) Brandon Mccaghren - 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

- This is a variation of the Ezekiel, which we have even seen finished in MMA in the UFC many times by Aleksei Oleinik. Aleksei seems to have multiple variations, even in his gripping. You'll notice that the Punch Choke is a specific grip. But most importantly, it's all about Brandon's shoulder positioning. This shoulder position is what makes it a strangle and not a "choke" (apologies to John Danaher for the misstep in nomenclature), though it is the conventional move in Jiu Jitsu circles to call them "blood chokes" and "wind chokes."
Punch Choke AKA Nogi Ezekiel
bmac.mykajabi....
Nekiaya put together this great reel of some of Brandon Mccaghren 's training footage, just looking for good examples of the Punch Choke and its setups and finishes.
Even though we have seen bmac hit this from many angles (even from his back in closed guard sometimes) mount and top half guard are his biggest homeruns.

Just as some internet dork was about to raise his hand and claim that it doesn't really work, you show 10 minutes of it working, and in some tough rolls that required setup and deception! Awesome!
Ha ha that’s the idea. My fave thing it to wake someone up after they say “that doesn’t work on good people.” So either it does work, or you aren’t good 😂😂
There is a difference between a move that can work against your students and a move that works on pro level competitors.
Since this vid dropped I've been hitting it consistently on less experienced guys but still haven't seen a NoGi Ezekiel, Front-Naked or Punch-Choke at the elite level.
@Brandon Mccaghren have you?
This move is a killer. I have managed it even from full guard. Some guys want to tough it out but I’d rather not. Once again, indispensable content. Oss Coach 🤙🏻
Yeah man you CAN do it from full guard.
Though I would recommend only doing that if you’re way better than the other person because they’re gonna try to kill you after that 😂
This has become easily my favorite submission since learning it. Spectacular highlight. There’s also a handsome fella you’re choking at 6:10.
he ha! one of my favorite guys!
are you using this mainly from half guard or mount or what?
@@brandonmcninja definitely from mount 90% of the time. The mount has become my favorite position in the whole game this year. Sometimes I’ll catch it while passing to mount from top half or a dope mount, but usually I try to make ‘em suffer from mount 1st :P
Had a dude do this on me a few weeks ago. No gi, he was reaching for my neck while in mount and I’m thinking “this ain’t gonna work”. Next thing I know, I’m about to black out. 😂
This is great. The last 6 minutes is pure darkness without sound
someone dead
It’s so helpful that you show it while live rolling
Thanks 🙏🏼 I definitely think a lot of people show things that they can’t even do themselves against a resisting opponent.
Best approach to proving a technique works. Was able to get this on a blue belt who is smaller then me. When trying against a blue belt stronger than me I got rolled. No problem, just watch the footage and try again. Thanks for the great instructional!
I love your content. Just watching a couple videos have helped me out a lot survive as a white belt. Can’t wait to try this punch choke today at the gym.
Thanks man. That punch choke takes a lot of good positioning work to make happen. It’s gonna be tough in the beginning. If it fails for you, make sure you don’t lose top position.
Love it! The Punch Choke has become one of my go-to moves!
it's sooooooo good
Absolutely love all your stuff, the specific move complications and the in class instructionals- please come Em coming!
i appreciate that! help spread the word!
I have hit this two different times in tournaments...really like this sub
I bought the triangle choke video and it was great! Well worth the money.
oh man! i appreciate that! and thank you for taking the time to come back and leave some nice feedback. that's good for me, so it means a lot.
Sweeeet Video! Good Instruction Prof!
Thank you!
This and the hand over mouth smother are so effective
The worst part is that sweaty skull rubbing up on your cheek
ummmm, that's the BEST part
@@brandonmcninja that's what I meant
i dont mind the skull part but it makes me reaaallly uncomfortable when someone rubs their actual face into my face/neck.. and not in a fun jiu jitsu kind of way. more like... in a "hey sorry im gonna find a new training partner" kind of way.
Killer move, always get someone with it. But man-o-man, the backlash... Something about this choke pisses people off...
It's the fact that they feel they're safe using two hands to try to escape mount, then all of a sudden, pain!
Love this move! Nasty! And I hit it or at least used to before training stopped.
i hope you're able to get back to training soon. i know that's hard
03:15 from closed guard top (nogi)
rt arm thread through opposite to prevent roll (350)
1015 more details
dont come back up, stay underneath
Thanks for the sliding down detail
That’s the trick. Make it happen and let me know your results. Test test test
Love this choke.
This is actually one of my go to subs these days, its just always there and it needs to be addressed to leads into plenty of other things too.
Fully admit I got this from the Bmac site initially (old school one) :)
happy to hear that! it works so easily
@@brandonmcninja Whoa whoa whoa, hold on now. I didn't say I could actually get it to work, just that it was one of my 'go to' subs lol.
To be fair the details where you've previously described dropping weight back and using head position etc, really upped the % of success, which was very much the same for my head & arm game (at least against other terrible people like me).
The kiss of death
@Brandon Mccaghren can you shed some light on why you prefer the NoGI punch choke (grabbing forearm of choking hand) vs the NoGI Ezekiel (RNC choke grip in the elbow)? I hit Ezekiels often, especially in the Gi, but when training NoGI I sometimes don't finish (using traditional RNC grip in the elbow) and I wonder if I should switch to the punch choke. Curious to hear your view. Thanks!
there are several reasons, but to sum it up it's just way easier to hit because of the positioning of my body and of the arms. punch choke is pure blood when you catch it right. ezekiel in no gi is super hard to finish.
@@brandonmcninja I'll switch it up and see how it goes. Have NoGI at 6am tomorrow. Thanks!
@@engst41 let me know if you need help.
@@brandonmcninja thank you so much! Love the content you put out. Keep it up, please, we all get better as a result!
@@brandonmcninja thank you for the reply, right that is pure strangle if done right
Can you get alot of your students to pull this off?
Or you find it takes the right measurements like arm length shoulder size
Yeah for sure. It’s just about making the right technical adjustments. It’s a pretty finesse move, so it takes a while to dial it in, but the juice is worth the squeeze.
I'm still confused as to if it works or not.
hard to say
@@brandonmcninja Lol! Thanks for uploading this, I'm a huge fan and have been working on getting this sub to land. Hopefully I can get out to your neck of the woods one of these days to train!
@@brandontodd14 come through anytime!
Try for yourself and find out. I cant get the punch-choke to work, but I've put 3 people out with a No-gi Ezekiel
Very cool. I am wondering, in a street fight I guess he tries to punch before you snap something in his throat ?
Thx
Killer
Great videos. Please keep up the great works. Question: I am a white belt and a blue belt always play with me by lying down there with both hands covering his neck TIGHT and elbows tugged in front of his chest. I am in full mount. I do not think I am strong enough to get his arms open. What can I do there to submit him? Thank you.
Hi, habe you figured this out yet? I figure using a cross grip to open up the elbows...so your right arm pushing against his left wrist while blocking his left elbow will force a sort of kimura then you can open him up from there.
Might be a stupid question but wouldn't these work in Gi as well?
yeah definitely, but having the sleeve in gi makes it easier to just use the sleeve grip instead
@@brandonmcninja gotcha.
Thanks!
How do you keep from being rolled off given both your arms can't post? and if I use my leg to post then they get inside leg position on me
Isn't there is a threat of reversal, like at @3:40 ,when he bridges with an underhook and especially if you are the lighter guy on top?
Definitely, especially if you don’t have your weight distributed well and if you are over committed to the choke. The rule is always stay on top. I’ll let go of any sub to keep you on the bottom position
Dude whats the name of tht first instrumental and where can I download it lol
Brandon, just had a question about the mechanics of the punch choke from side control. I was just wondering if the mechanics would be the same as doing the choke from the mount. Thanks
Same mechanics yea, but watch out because you’re not as stable positionally
@@brandonmcninja thanks a lot. It would be great if you could do a video about it. Thanks again
Punch choke and no-gi Ezekiel are similar but different. I've put guys out with the latter. The former puts too much pressure at an odd angle on the wrists. Easy for my opponents to break out of.
I agree they are different. Punch Choke is much more efficient
10 minutes and not one comp footage of this working. Yeah seems legit 🤣
I guess I’m a fraud 🤷
:-O Subscribing.
Thank you!
Title of music @ 8:50 anybody?
This is my shit. No one respects it, they let you have it. Have to get your weight far forward and the pressure is too much especially if you push with your chin.
one of the gnarliest chokes in the game. just takes a lot of patience and understanding of the subtleties
Who's claiming this?
Because Paulson was teaching this in 96.
Who said anyone is claiming it?
@@bringthefresh4094
It seems to be getting a lot of attention lately so I figured someone mainstream has brought it to light.
Claiming what?
