    This is one of my favorite videos from you Drew! Thank you for doing it. Teaching people about the history of design is so important not to get trapped in the thought that new is better. Trends are rooted in history and the old can be refinished and refreshed rather than tossed. Please do more of these Drew ❤

    I had a pink boucle suit in the 60s. It wasn't Chanel, but it looked just like one! My mom made it for me because I was a young teenager and wanted something grown up looking for my Easter suit. I remember going with her to pick out the fabric and just loving the texture of it. The lady in the fabric store said "You'll look just like Jackie Kennedy!" I wish!

    You could say wood paneling in general (incl. ship lap as a variation) is Northern European while limewash, arches and zellige are Mediterranean.

    Thanks for your history lesson. I appreciate your research, visual examples and the fast pace you presented the info. I'd love to see more videos like this one.
    My opinion about "trends" is that although they are based on ideas that have been around for a very long time, the way those ideas are used is what causes them to become "dated". There's usually a period of 20-60 years after a trend peaks where it becomes associated with "old and outdated" and we all move on to something "new". After 20-60 years, the trend is often revived with a tweak that makes it look new again. The best way to avoid "dated" decor is to incorporate trendy items with traditional/antique things that aren't trends at the moment.

      Yeah i dont agree with the headline "will never go out of Style" like he mentioned himself, he painted his wood panelling white, so there was a period when this wasn't in style, I don't get it. He takes elements that were modern 20-30 years ago, just like you said, and then says it's timeless because of that. But in those 20-30 years in-between noone liked it.

    Lots of great info here. I always have leaned toward quality classics that stand the test of time for the "bones" of a home and it's interior elements. You can always sprinkle in a few inexpensive trendy items that are easy to change out when they lose their (temporary) luster, but it's a good investment to keep the major stuff timeless.
    Personally, I like all of these classic design elements except for horizontal shiplap on walls - that is one thing I would never want in a home.
    Great video and yes, I would like to see more like this.

    I have always loved wallpaper. The walls of my entire kitchen and dining room are covered in a French wallpaper, where I found a series of patterns that complimented one another. It is over 20 years old, and I still love it. My advice is to buy the highest quality paper you can afford because it lasts for many years!! (The one in the kitchen actually looks like lime wash using muted blue tones.)

  • @kristinbrown5683
    @kristinbrown5683 Před 28 dny +4

    That was fun! I would love to see a video on different design styles. I don’t mean the easy ones like mcm or farmhouse. (It’s been fun to see your house and design style. You mention Spanish Revival for the house with some Brutalist decor.) For instance, here are some confusing ones, Art Deco & Hollywood Glam, Contemporary & Traditional, Modernism & Modern & Stream-line Modern & Post-Modernism, Bauhaus Movement & Scandinavian. Now there is granmillenial and cottage core. I feel like people are making some stuff up as they go on the last two.😂 But, for me, it all gets confusing. So sometimes when someone is explaining something and throws one of these terms out, I don’t always get it.

    L O L! You were talking about wood paneling, and the reason why it was used. Absolutely correct! I inherited my mom and dad‘s rent house after they passed and you got it. They’ve got the wood paneling on the walls in the major big areas, the living room, the dining room, the kitchen! So in my living room, I caulked where of course it’s come away from the wall and I stripped all the sculpting trim on the top of the ceiling or at the top. And I painted over my paneling instead of replacing it. It’s still a work in progress, but much better than that dark woodin my just a little over thousand square-foot home and it doesn’t make those rooms look so tiny!

      Wood paneling was used a lot in the 60"s and 70's in cheaper construction - no need to dry wall, tape, and mud. I once pulled the paneling away in a home I was living in and found they had used newspaper for insulation - if they had used any insulation.

    Loved this video Drew!! ANYTHING history intrigues me. But the history of home decor design with a little sprinkle of fashion on top! Totally sucks me in! Would love more videos like this one! Thank you!
