Yet we haven’t heard it really cause nothing has been done. We continue to do the same stupid things. We give a bunch of money to the police for centuries yet here we are crime rising. Why not try something different?
The government is controlled by big corporations. They are allowed to donate as much money as they want to political campaigns. It is legalized bribery. That is why our government does not work. Brandon Johnson's policies (which he speaks to at length) are directly against those special interests. What he advocates for is meaningful change. Not the means-tested, watered-down, "band-aid on an infected wound" policies that Paul Vallas (and any other establishment politician) advocates for.
There were 9 people who ran. Vallas and Johnson were the top 2 (the two candidates that got the most votes), so they advanced to round 2 and a second election is being held on April 4th for them. Lori “Beetlejuice” Lightfoot lost the first election and didn’t win a second term, mainly due to her lack of commitment, crime rising which she did nothing about, her arrogance, and so much more that contributed to her large disapproval rating.
Funny, you wish to trust the city to a man who has so much baggage. Quick Google check, and he been let go more times than my brother. Johnson does not present well at all. These rehearsed empty lines he spits can be weird and distracting. It's like a bad dj that can't transition, lol. He's not ready for prime time. Plus, all these random taxes he wants to raise are not smart. I don't mind taxes where they make sense, but in this city, let's start with working with what we have
Well at least he’s not going to destroy their public school system and run off Philadelphia and other cities to do the same like vallas did after he literally abandoned Chicago in 2001
Both candidates are running as democrats, the city is majority democrat, these news organizations are mostly left leaning (Disney owns ABC and Univision is a Latino focused organization). I’m not sure what you expected.
We need community based programs that are designed so that we are all working together and not divided. We are failing because of division. Some ideas ? My wife and I watched this debate to help make an informed decision on our next mayor. This was very interesting and helped to make a good voting decision.
Paul Vallas is CLEARLY the more experienced, rational and realistic candidate in this race. CTU owns Johnson and will call their loyalty card in the next time the city negotiates a new contract. In the end Chicago needs someone who has a track record of managing. The city is desperate for a mayor who can attract big business and expand our tax base and curtail the epidemic crime spree plaguing every neighborhood.
That’s what Rahm did and a lot of people complained about him. Rahm had a lot of political pull and brought corporations here. City was clean overall too.
So not sure why the city dont vote Republican for a change. The problem is, alot of Democrats dont realize that they are actually Republicans. They just vote Democrat because they feel like they are supposed to.. This is sad. You literally described what a Republican would more likely do.
@@mountainsky4279 You can do both. Chicago is big enough and has enough vacant land around to allow big and small businesses to thrive. I'm not advocating for every neighborhood to turn into West Loop, but it's great to have big businesses like McDonald's and Salesforce here to provide well paying jobs. Concentrate the big businesses in the Loop and put the small businesses in the neighborhoods. Have the corporations partner with our local community colleges, High Schools, and Universities to create programs to build pipelines to allow for economically challenged students to obtain these high paying jobs and create businesses for themselves. A public/private sector collaboration is needed for a healthy economy and thriving city.
Isn't Brandon Johnson a leftist progressive like Bernie and AOC; and Lightfoot and Vallas are Moderate centrist like Joe Biden. So wouldn't vallas be more similar to Lightfoot on the political spectrum?
It was obvious in the debate that Vallas has the knowledge and experience. He was a terrific superintendent when I taught in Chicago in the mid 90's. Teachers were happy because he supported the union. We didn't need to go on strike because we had great pay and benefits and administrative support. Parents were happy because he got the neighborhood schools back to the community. He brought top notch IB programs for students who wanted to excel and summer school programs for those who needed extra help to pass to the next level. Johnson only lasted 5 years in a PUBLIC school Vallas created. What skills does a commissioner have but a "Vote". Another waste of taxpayer's money. He bashed Vallas instead of giving solutions. CTU hasn't helped the teachers since Jackie Vaughn was president of CTU. Karen Lewis sold out to Rahm Emanuel. The young teachers don't realize what a good contract is because they never had one and Johnson as a Union lobbyist hasn't helped. Wake up teachers! Johnson lied about Vallas creating charter schools. Gov. Edgar in the 90s, mandated that Chicago create 15 Charter school. Vallas created many PUBLIC schools and nationally renowned magnet high schools with union teachers in response to this mandate. Don't trust a person like Johnson who bashes and makes up stories because he has no experience or tried and true solutions. Johnson's idea of a 3.5% city tax will never go away once it's in place. That will negate any raise you may receive. Untrue bashing and "Bring Home Chicago" with no explanation are signs of incompetence. Take it from me, a CTU member for 34 years. Johnson clearly doesn't know how to work the city, state and federal systems to get things done. Vallas does. Watch the last debate carefully and LISTEN.
As a retired CPS teacher, I agree with everything you said. The CTU used to be a productive union, but has turned into a political juggernaut. I can't support anyone that is funded and pushed by them. He will tax us to death. Unfortunately, I don't think he understands how economics work, or he just thinks everyone is too ignorant to see that. And, he sure likes to talk about generating billions of dollars from his "magic" programs. He tosses dollar amounts around like he's playing Monopoly. With no clarification on how he will achieve these amounts or goals. I see why the union supports him. He will be their puppet. They don't want Vallas because he has too much successful experience with public education. They fear him and his common sense approach along with a return to basic educational values. The mighty dollar is also what they covet and fear. Vallas wants money to follow the child. The union abhors this idea because it weakens them and takes some of their control away. Don't get it twisted, the union doesn't have children's best interests at heart. It's about power, control and money. This current radical bunch in charge of the CTU is probably the worst and most damaging group ever to run this union. They are destroying education and replacing it with victims while nurturing a generation of nearly illiterate people. Johnson seems to embody this narrative, as well. So, as a fellow 32 year retiree of the same system, I see it the same way you do. Enjoyed your comments. Enjoy your retirement. We stuck it out and didn't run after 5 years. So I value your take more than his, for sure.
Become of lori and people like johnson nobody wants to be the police anymore and liberals like will pay the price because you will end up being a victim of a crime because you are clueless.
Officers left due to light foots leadership and left to suburbs. officers want to come back hoping for the chance that whichever mayor this time around is voted in, will allow them to do their jobs , also due to forced vaccination. that’s what I’m thinking 🤷🏻♀️
Chicago has a bad habit of picking the wrong mayors. If they want to fix the city they need to just vote opposite of who they really want to vote for lbs.
VOTE PAUL VALLAS for a safer, secure, funded, united Chicago. Police are funded. Schools are open. Businesses and job growth. Balanced budgets with bills paid on time.
Workers can't give too much assistance if the local gangs are taking a bunch of the donated goods and scaring off the volunteers. Less cops in an urban area pretty much always results in more gang activity, and less people willing to provide aid in those areas (because well, they don't feel safe).
One is about trying to prevent crime and the other is about calling in mental health care crisis workers in order to prevent crime. If you can't see the difference in them, please do us all a favor and don't vote, period.

He seems with all respect the guy with a plan, better spoken and articulative, Brandon seems to be baiting for nice clips to spread around on social media, which is fine it works but is disingenuous and doesn’t show his real plan and leads to concerns of it, vallas seems upfront but then again you hear and see the vallas destroying budgets Lmao
Police don’t solve nor prevent crime. So you can hire 1000 more and nothing will change. You will continue having car jacking murders gun crimes. Only a small portion of individuals are doing these crimes. Yet they capable of facing no prosecution. If the police don’t catch them in the act it requires an investigation yet we have no detectives. The ones we have is overburdened. It’s like having a chess board full of pawns while you’re opponent has his knight and queen and bishop and rooks. We need to solve crimes or they will continue. Police do nothing to stop crime.
That’s counterintuitive, cops merely respond to crime, hardly discourage or prevent anything. A presence can be useful but like a child when their parents are watching, they’ll wait it out/find a way around. Disincentivize crime by investing in people. Same ol same ol gets you same ol results, insanity!

I'm just a poor working man but I am so shocked that there are no people in Chicago that are interested in running for mayor.

I'm really disappointed in CTU as a parent of two children in CPS. I will never vote for a mayor who hands more power to CTU.
We shouldn't be "attracting big business", we need to be supporting local businesses.

@@sneakyv864 he’s said himself he leans more towards republican
No, you did say defund the police.
Well said👍🏿
As a retired CPS teacher, I agree with everything you said.
