  • A long overdue unboxing of a package that arrived over 3 years ago and got lost during my move into the country!
    Filled to the brim with a fantastic collection of near mint Yesteryear models this package was worth the wait. So glad it was discovered and that I am able to showcase these beautiful models for all to see.
    A big shout out to Charles Bartlett from Christie Downs , near Adelaide in Australia, for donating these gems!

    The American flag "backwards" indicates the direction of the wind. It's displayed that way on anything that would have movement. That's why it is shown both ways on the model, depending on the side it's on and the flow of the breeze. (From Illinois, USA)

    As far as the Heinz 57 I believe that is a dill pickle.

      Yup, it's a pickle. I don't know if it's SPECIFICALLY a DILL pickle, since they made sweet pickles too, but it IS a pickle of SOME kind. I'm guessing they never worried about WHAT kind.

    The sign on the Heinz truck, is a pickle. An early Heinz product. Also, Heinz never actually had 57 varieties of anything - the founder, Henry J Heinz, just liked the sound of it, although early adverts mention '57 Varieties Of Pickle' (there weren't).
    Lledo were a company formed by the chief designer of Matchbox, Jack Odell - 'Lledo' is his surname backwards. His company made some beautiful 'Yesteryear' type models, the original series of which came with some ridiculously good figures. Worth finding and collecting. Odell then produced 1/43 scale 'Vanguards', which were almost identical to classic 1960's Corgi models, but far better quality. Lledo was eventually bought out by Corgi.

      As a school kid in Surburbia outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania you would take a field trip into the city and tour the Heinz Plant- watch them make Ketchup and such and you would get a plastic Pickle pin at the end of the tour. The canton of the US flag is properly displayed in the upper left hand corner, whether displayed vertically or horizontally. However, a flag decal displayed on a vehicle or as a patch on an article of clothing can have a reverse fly configuration, meaning the canton is leading the flag, because the US flag must always advance. Hope this clears it up for you.

    Hi Marty, i can let you into a little secret. I used to work at Matchbox Toy factory in Rochford Essex for six years until they shut it down in 1990/91. I worked in the diecast foundry for 6 months (it was bloody hot in the summer even with the vents and windows open) until i went into the plastics department. They made me redundant three week's before Christmas in 1988 when they were operating on a skeleton shift from 1989 until they shut down to move everything to China. Now i can tell you that all the diecast cars and lorrys that were made never came out of the factory 🏭 with the same colour plastic or paint work. Specially the plastic powder because i was in charge of the plastics store, sending everything onto the shop floor. Whenever we ran out of the colours they wanted, the management would say to us to send over a replacement colour over to complete the order. So that means the same models that came out of the factory did have different coloured plastic and paint work on the models.

    Beautiful batch of models Marty, you're very lucky to have a donor like Charles! My favorite was the blue & white steam engine with the gold trim! Exquisite model! For info, you are correct on the display of the Stars & Stripes! It should be shown as when facing the flag, the blue star field should always be up to the left, symbolically pointing to your heart. A great collection from Charles, thank you Marty for sharing! From Yuma, Arizona, USA, have a great afternoon!

  • @kjamison5951
    @kjamison5951 Před rokem +5

    Marty, you are correct about the orientation of the US Stars and Stripes. In certain situations, the stars portion should always point towards the front of the person or vehicle - specifically military patches and painted emblems.
    This is to symbolise the flag being carried on a standard and moving forward. From the left hand side, of the person carrying the standard, the flag looks correct with the field of stars in the upper left hand corner.
    From the right, the field of stars should appear in the upper right hand corner - it looks odd but it is correct as this is how the flag would appear if it was being moved forwards and the wind was whipping the flag back.
    As for that Trailways coach, it would not be a requirement for the flag to be reversed as it only a bus company.

    • @A_Just.OK_Gamer
      @A_Just.OK_Gamer Před rokem +1

      You are mostly correct. The Union of the flag (the blue square with stars) should ALWAYS be in the upper left corner, whether hanging horizontal or vertical as it is intended to be viewed. The only exception is when the flag is on the right side of a uniform or vehicle. As you said, but I don't think it's limited to official or military vehicles. I'm pretty sure it includes ALL vehicles. It should always be oriented to be seen as it always moving forward. So it would be proper for that bus to have it mirrored.

    aw, so many yesteryears...
    I have an even more pristine version of that renault. it's cast into a block of clear resine and some Renault dealerships gave them out as gifts when you bought a new car I think. it's been sitting here a long time, I guess my dad got it when he bought his last new Renault, a 1975 model R4.
    I could be wrong, but at leats most of the models that sat on ashtrays, coin trays, pen holders, and so on, were either silver- or gold plated. I have a Bentley in silver someone brought back from canada once, mounted on an ashtray, but the tray is gone. I wonder where it went.
    Beck's Bier comes from Bremen, germany. Karlsberg Bier hails from Homburg, between rivers Mosel and Rhine in central western germany. Löwenbräu comes from Munich. Matchbox had some "beer" series from countries, and germany was one of them. :)
    the hame rein is, if I'm not mistaken, the strap around the nose, behind the bite, so the horse can't just open the mouth to release the pressure from the rein and ignore it. it also means it can't breathe through the mouth much, which is important if the horse has to pull a heavy cart up a hill. european cities which are located in vallerys, like Stuttgart, had steam-powered pulley systems on certain streets to help the horses pull their load uphill.
    I have seen the partial corrosion on the roof of that model T truck. I just don't know what causes it, but I assume they didn't clean the mould properly and leftover, oxidized pieces were molten into the new load's surface. it always seems to happen with such corrugated surfaces. not sure if cleaning and repainting really repairs that, it might come back later.

    Hi Marty, the ‘searchlight’ or ‘radio’ on the front of that vehicle is likely a supercharger unit to give it some extra horsepower. They were usually a bolt-on unit and quite ugly. As car engines developed and turbos were introduced, the units were made smaller and fitted in the engine compartment.

    The "mounted" models probably came with transparent cases over them, but crystal clear plastic tends to be brittle, unless it's lexan or something, but that (far as I know) can only be produced in flat sheets, not cast in convenient box shapes. So, I'm guessing they got broken.

    A number of years ago, matchbox did a Beer company series. That is the color the Spiker came in, it's missing it's gear shift.

    Lake Goldsmith is between Beaufort and Skipton in Western Victoria. The Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally is an annual event highlighting Steam Engines. I went there 50 years ago when we lived in Beaufort. It’s on again in November this year. Google Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally.
