  • “War destroys all systems that sustain and nurture life-familial, economic, cultural, political, environmental, and social,” Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges writes. “Once war begins, no one, even those nominally in charge of waging war, can guess what will happen, how the war will develop, how it can drive armies and nations towards suicidal folly.” In this urgent, unscheduled segment of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc talks with Hedges about the path that led to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and about his firsthand experience with the horrific, inhumane reality of war.
Chris Hedges is the former Middle East bureau chief of The New York Times, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and a columnist at ScheerPost. He formerly hosted the program Days of Revolt, produced by TRNN, and is the author of several books, including America: The Farewell Tour, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, and War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning.

Chris is a prophet of doom he has been preaching this message for more than 20 years and the end has not come yet. The guy that stands on the corner holding up the sign or going door to door shouting "the end is coming". Then 5 years later he is still there and nothing has changed. For Chris the imminent train has not arrived. He is not disprovable in fact yes america as a country will eventually end this next year or a in a thousand years no country in fact I can say nothing not the earth or the sun nor the united states will last forever so he is not wrong. He is just a prophet of doom that is wearing thin.

War is simply a continuation of business by other means.
My dad decided to become a professional soldier.
He was sent to fight in Yemen in 1967, and I was conceived there.
My mother was traumatised when the block of flats next door was razed to the ground.
I have no idea if she insisted on being evacuated following the explosion or if the government decided to get all non-essential personnel out of there.
It is a tragedy, attempting to start a family in the middle of a war.
I'm 54 and the war in Yemen is still going on.

It's a three party war. Somehow the west needs to embolden some people with a cause into war so they can dive in afterwards. It doesn't work without its military. Sick! So many people will suffer hell but that is not important as long as the west has its way. Ukrainians have been led to believe they'll be supported more in their cause against Russia. I think there will be no winner here among the three parties. There can't be no dignified victory. Crimea had been annexed already. Those regions declared independent. Ukraine is too much of a loser already. Russia can't win all it wants either. Only the military industrialists unbothered with nationalistic or ideological ideals will win.

Nope, Chris Hedges is overtly paranoid, his options are filled with assumptions about the people he doesn't like, namely the conservatives. I'm politically center, so it's much easier for me to spot this. For the liberals watching this, it will be much harder for them to recognize this. I recommend examining each claim he makes, and really think about them. Is it something that is true, or is it something that sounds true, if you believe conservatives are boogie men, out to get everyone. In political polarization each side wants to see the other as people with malicious intent, this pushes our mind to ignore all the things they say, and accept anything said against them. Yes, people do sometimes lie, but they also sometimes tell the truth. If we want to know the truth about anything, then we have got to do the work necessary to look deeper into the subject and find out how things really are. Beware of provocative speakers, who don't feel a need to try to be unbiased. Western democracies are all good countries that are organized well. Yes, they are not perfect, but they are very good when you consider they are all run by people. And all people have flaws. Chris Hedges makes them into the villain of his ideas. It's a basis that leads to so much error in his conclusions.

The eastern European countries joined NATO voluntarily, and improved relations with NATO countries through diplomacy. This is contrasted with Russia invading counties to get them on their side. Of course countries CHOOSE to join NATO, the Russian government is dangerous. Yet all Chris Hedges can see is somehow Putin's insanity is NATOs fault. 2:55 Mr. Hedges likes to repeat the myth of the alleged promise made to the Soviets but where is the evidence? At the time of German reunification 1989, NATO could not have promised at all that the alliance would expand east of Germany. This is propaganda of the Russians. Because at that time the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact still existed. Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary were still in the alliance with the USSR. So it would have been absurd to make such a promise. Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were still part of the Soviet Union at that time. Nobody forced all these countries into NATO. They wanted to join the alliance voluntarily because they were (rightly) afraid of Russia.
Furthermore, it is downright insulting to the Russian intelligentsia to assume that such an important matter would not have been written down and anchored in a treaty.
P.S. Ukraine voluntarily handed over to Russia all its nuclear weapons that were on the territory of Ukraine when the Soviet Union broke apart. In return for a promise from Russia that Ukraine would not be threatened or harassed in any way by Russia. Who is talking here about this broken promise?

That lead to the Nato expansion and the ignoring of all Russian positions regarding it. Russia still being Russia made a point with this war, a very ugly and vicious point. What is not mentioned by Mark Steiner, although it was by Chris Hedges is that the US also has a long history of annexing or purchasing countries around it: Texas, CA, Hawaii, Louisiana, Alaska, for starters, not to mention the 13 colonies. And then there are all the other countries it has effectively and successfully colonized: Puerto Rico, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Also, colonies in effect, whose governments they almost totally control by might and power: Haiti, Columbia in South America, Costa Rica, Panama, etc., and all of western Europe, starting with the UK, the most subservient with Germany a close second. Unfortunately, it did not go well with the US in the Middle East but they tried there too and are still trying to take over and control it, as they do in Western Europe. • @nonianonesuch9375
      @nonianonesuch9375 Před 2 lety +1

Chris is a brilliant man and someone I have respected deeply over the years, and he gets the big picture of war exactly right but time will tell if continued resistance is a truly unwinnable for Ukraine. From the less maximalist ultimatums Russia is proposing, it now appears that Putin may find an occupation of a country ready to fight to the death untenable even if he "wins" by bombing everything and everyone to smithereens and taking a really hard hit on his personal pocket for doing it. That greedy sociopath might just find it necessary to propose peace terms Ukraine can reasonably accept and diplomacy can start for real. A critical mass of Ukrainians have chosen to fight to the last drop of blood or flee the country if possible or resist occupation any way they can rather than capitulate to Russia and we have to respect their choice. That kind of resolve was not manufactured by the weapons peddlers.
This is a unique dynamic and Putin in his current state doesn't represent rational Russian security interests the way Gorbachev and Yeltsin had when they wanted to integrate. Then Russia ceased its attacks on neighboring countries, seemingly, for good. When Ukraine ceded its nukes to Russia, Russia made a formal treaty to recognize Ukraine,s independence and never invade its territory. Not conditioned on NATO expansion or EU membership.
Putin makes it clear in his rambling invasion day speech and pre invasion and "post victory" articles that it's an imperialist dogmatic war for him and he feels entitled to absorb Ukraine into Russian rule like it had been back in the 19th century. That would be an act of obliteration and that,s exactly what he,s trying to accomplish now. If the West baited Putin with anything, it was with an ineffectual response to his other war crimes in Chechnia and Syria and Crimea. He should've been severely sanctioned then, instead he kept amassing his billions.
My other journalistic hero, Masha Gessen has a great insight into Putin and recent Russian social history, so I have to side with her there. NATO expansion was just a pretext, like the "Russian genocide by Nazi Kiev" or "gay pride parades" or any other bullshit excuse.

I wouldn't have a problem with that necessarily, if it was not coupled with complete denial of any moral or legal for the crime of a war of aggression at the Kremlin doorstep

Coincidental ain't it that just as we get out of Afghanistan and end a useless 20 year war there, corporate America finds a place for all those unused weapons to go.

Wow, Mr Chris Hedges consistently shows his unbiased knowledge of worldly matters. A distinguishly honorable man who takes the risk to educate us, the lesser in reading the proper non-propaganda material.

The last time I saw him on CBC was a few years ago on CBC News Network, the business show with Kevin Whasisname from Dragons Den, and that woman who was a rising star business reporter at the time, Whatwashername. Kevin Whasisname called Hedges a leftwing loony on air. The proof for me of who is more important is that I can't remember the names of those two hosts anymore, but I'll never forget Chris Hedges.

Did Russia annex Crimea ... no it did not ... as a semi autonomous state of the ukraine the people of Crimea voted 90%+ to ask Russia to accept it back into Russia. Ukrainian troops were given the choice of remaining or leaving. Not a shot was fired.

Chris makes a comment that few people realise " war is demonic". And the more a war progresses, the more demonic the spiritual dimension becomes. His comment " War controls you, You don't control war" , should be seriously heeded.

    Trump had it right....defund NATO.
I did not know Mark was still around.
He had the best shows on every radio station that he has been on; but he hits too close to the bone (truth), and that can only last so long, if at all.
    Hats off to Mr Steiner.
