Ep 12 Sailing from the Azores to the UK, closing the loop on our Atlantic Circuit

- Time to sail back to the UK (Plymouth) with my good friend Richard, we sailed the 1254nm of our passage in 9 days, plenty of time under spinnaker but also had to use the engine in the light patches. We had an annoying issue with the engine not starting (resolved once we landed - see next video) but we had a great time out on the water. Sailing two-handed on my Westerly Sealord is much the same as solo sailing but with the addition of sleep - Luxury!

For my day-job I run a small business repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them) I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their sailing boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries and provide consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

Compared to most of the stuff out there, this is far better, you sail them and fix them and the videos are well done, I don't understand it
I did ask a few ppl in the interests of marketing lol and one guy said that because you are professional it's always very expensive and maybe you could offer less expensive options for DIY on a budget? Just an idea 💡
I planned to leave my country and go sailing. Instead Swambo (She who must always be obeyed) thought we should first settle in land, get our new citizenship and then go sailing. With good fortune we will apply for citizenship next year! Your channel is EXTREMELY valuable. Thanks a stack.

Seabirds and lures - always a scary scenario.
And one thing for certain, Bernard Moitessier was definitely an exception to the most common sentiments at the end of a passage - usually having to do with a beer, on land, in a bar, near a bed that doesn't move.

very nice. in the 70's & 80s my grand parents had a house looking out on the Tamar and Albert bridge. I also remember anchoring there and bring the bucket of mackerel up to my grand parents. recent travels down there just a lovely, one heck of a lot more yachts.
Yes I bet there are a lot more boats now than 40+ years ago but it still retains a great deal of charm, I have really enjoyed our visits to the Tamar.

Looking forward to a discussion about CopperCoat. It was applied to my boat by a previous owner and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it.
The skinny version is its performance can depend on how well it is applied, but those that expect it to be the best thing since sliced bread because of its cost will be disappointed because it’s not as good as stopping fouling as a high strength antifouling paint. But if you are happy to clean your bottom regularly then it works and saves applying new AF every year. The performance of all AF is massively dependant on three things, how often the boat is used, how warm the water is and the biological material in the waters (some areas have higher fouling than others).

Just trying to work out what I'm seeing with your mainsheet arrangement (searching for ideas for my Co28). In your trip to Studland Bay from Newtown Creek I noticed a bullseye in the sheet but here on this video the bullseye looks like it's detached and lashed on a strop to the boom. Care to list the parts and route of the mainsheet? Many thanks
It’s a 4:1 purchase between the boom and the traveller (which is not a lot for the size of the main but it is lead to a winch so no big deal), when the sheet leaves the purchase it goes though a centreline block on the deck aft of the traveller and then via a cheek and onto a winch.
I don’t think my arrangement would work very well on a co28, you want somthing similar to a co32 with either a 4:1 or 6:1 purchase (although a 4:1 should be plenty).
If you did a W-E transatlantic crossing again, would you stop at the Azores a second time round? Asking as I plan on the same crossing next year.
Absolutely, well worth the stop, I have sailed to or via the Azores three times now and it is well worth the stop. Not just a good place to stop, rest and restock but well worth visiting as a destination. I had spent about 5 weeks there when making this video.
Is that blue sail an old IOR Blooper?
No, it’s a very old (old design and manufacture) cruising chute, I’m surprised it didn’t blow out but still in one piece. It’s a horrible shape so Christmas present to the boat is a new Asymmetric kite (A2).
