Less Crowded Texas Hill Country Towns, Llano

  • It can often be frustrating to visit the more popular Hill Country towns like Fredericksburg and Gruene. Those towns are often very crowded and it can be difficult to find a room. Today I present a town that's usually less crowded and yet still lies in a prime location to visit the many scenic places in this region. In addition, it has some of the best beef brisket in Texas.

Sorry for butchering the Town's name. It's probably my biggest mistake in this channel so far. I would probably take the video down, but it's getting a lot of views. Texas has many names with odd pronunciations that will trip up most people not familiar with it. I've been pronouncing the name like this for years ever since I first saw it on a geologic map, but no one ever corrected me on it. Lesson learned.

The hill country has some of the clearest water you'll ever see. There are some sweet spots within that are incredibly beautiful. Just don't expect Smoky Mountain sized hills. I recommend places like Pedernales Falls, Enchanted Rock, Hamilton Pool, Colorado Bend State Park, Lost Maples, and the Frio River for hiking and outdoors. There are several great small towns scattered around, many with German roots like Fredericksburg and New Braunfels. Just remember these places can be crowded during peak season so plan ahead.

People commenting on geology need understand it's all aged theory. They can't say oh well this rock or formation of rocks is millions or billons years old, they have no clue. A good example is Mt St.Helens in Washington state when it blew it's top in 1980. The shear force of that volcano carved out a canyon in as little as 90 minutes that anyone no knowing how that canyon was formed would say oh this canyon is millions of years old.

Llano is a spanish name meaning plains or flat. The double Ll has the y sound in spanish. It's Hill country and where land was flat, they established little towns. Of course when the Germans arrived and established in these areas, new names were given, like Gruene, Fredericksburg, etc. There is a mixture of architecture both German and Mexican. Anyway, they are very popular towns with lots of tourism and weekends very crowded. Not my idea of a nice peaceful outing away from the big city. The architecture was my interest to visit on a weekday without the crowds.

The geology is truly unique, and the fascinating Enchanted Rock, America’s version of Ayers Rock, is not far to the south. I lived in Llano from 2004-2010. I left as soon as I could sell my house. I wanted to leave after a year or so but it took several years to sell a good house. It's a town that is slowly going away. I'm not sure how it has survived as long as it has. (Probably just because of the deer hunting season). 99.9 % of the people there are very conservative and closed-minded to any sort of change. No places to get healthy food, you have to drive 70 mile round trip to go to a decent grocery store. The public library is very poor. Llano tries to be a 'tourist town' but there are only antique shops that sell junk of poor quality, a couple of low quality BBQ places, a couple of pizza places, a low quality coffee hangout spot, and a couple of "art galleries." There are a couple of BBQ and chili cook-offs a year which are about as much fun as can be had there. If you're looking for rocks, some wild flowers for awhile in the spring and lots of different kinds of snakes it's a great place. Bring your Harley, your pickup and your meth and you'll be happy there.

Sounds like LA or NYC is your place to live and enjoy the benefits of a fascist state.

@@taunaengus4978 So a question pops into my head. Do you mean that you couldn’t see any of these shortcomings before you purchased a house? You didn’t drive around town/research the area? Wow, just wow...

It's pronounced with a y as in Yano. Cool rocks! Dont go too deep on explanations. Were not geologist. Sorry!

Everyone seems to have their own idea on how the town should be pronounced. Though the word is technically Spanish, the town was founded by Anglo and German settlers and they decided to call it Lan-o. I was taught in Geography class that the correct pronunciation of any town is how the locals pronounce it regardless of origin of the word. I usually don't talk about geology but it's very significant to this part of Texas, the core of the famous Texas Hill Country.

Llano in English.. in Spanish is pronounced yano..unfortunately even though my ancestors go back along with native Americans way before Europeans arrived to an inhabited country we're still discriminated against. One reason I balk moving to a state that's rooted in racism.
