I'm on my second MyWeigh. The first one lasted about six years before the power button broke through. I opened it up, cleaned all the years of food out, and made a makeshift power button with tape and printer paper. It now lives in the garage.
The new one replaced it in the kitchen. Yes, it's huge, but it is by FAR the best consumer scale I've ever had. You can turn the speed up so that it responds to changing weight (you showed this but didn't explain), and will weigh something as little as 2 grams.
It also holds its calibration very well. Yes, I'm that guy that calibrates his scales. After years of kitchen abuse, it was only off by maybe 2 grams at 5 kg after an initial break-in period where it varied a bit. Its accuracy is nearly the same as my A&D 6000i professional scale. Both repeatability and precision are top-notch.

Great review, thanks Lisa. I do like it when reviewers give real world reviews like in your case. Yes the MyWeight does it all but day-to-day the OXO is a better scale for most of everyday use. I'm replacing a Salter scale I purchased from Linen and Things in the late 1990's. That scale measured in 4 gram increments, and recently the middle led number died so I figured 20 years of service and better precision today it would be time to replace and not fix my scale. I ordered the OXO through your link so be sure to assure you got credit for the sale as I may have purchased the Taylor if I hadn't watched this video..... what a mistake that would have been. Thanks.

Most of these scales have significant tare issues. Found that out the hard way. Example my needs (Espresso) where you're dealing with +/- 0.1g making an impact, when you lift a tared container off the scale to remove beans and put it back on the scale your entire tare weight can be off by as much as 1g-4g .. not to mention lag on small weight is exceedingly annoying.
If money is no object then I'd strongly recommend the $225 *Acaia Lunar* otherwise the $65 *Timemore B22.* Both are extremely accurate, exceptionally fast and great in the kitchen because they can handle a spill. Clearly in either case depending upon your max weight requirements, the above are approximately 2Kg. Both are USB rechargeable.

You should have considered the type of batteries. The mid-size units might use common and high capacity AA batteries that can be recharged. The scale should never power off with those but seem artificially crippled.
My scale has approximately 1 kg negative weight, and I can get it to weigh 6.2 kg, over the limit, if I put a kilogram on it before turning it on.
For weighing 3 grams you should get another small jeweller's scale for 10 euros, except that it won't be ergonomic, durable and use button cells. The flour and soda pour out of the package in clumps. You poured more carefully for the winner.

Unless you are going to pay thousands of dollars for a lab scale. Being able to have a high weight limit and also reasonable accuracy below 1 g. Is just not feasible. If you are weighing small amounts like 0 to 2 g do you need a high precision scale.

My current ones that have a 5KG limit and weigh in 1g increments, seem accurate at lower weights but when it starts getting past 2.5 KG they read about +60g heavier than the actual weight. All I care about it the accuracy at all weights. If I only use those scales to weigh something that's say 2 KG and I want to divide that into 20 containers then I do end up with 100g per container, so they are accurate "to themselves" but overall on heavy weights, not accurate.

Huh... disappointed that these all only do whole-number grams (which, apparently, they're also allowed to be 1-2 grams off by their own standards). Even the OXO was 1 gram off in the intro apple demo, while the rest were fine. Aren't there any scales that'll show grams with a one-tenth decimal (that also don't suck in other ways too much)?

Step outside the box. Chemistry scales are a bit more expensive but will give you 3 decimal places on the gram scale. They use superior sensors and come with calibration weights.

  • @ZaCloud-Animations___she-her

Uhhh.... under Speed in the micro-weight section, y'all said the Ozeri was a little better.... but it jumped straight up to 7 grams. 😅 Though the person also might have been pouring just too much too fast. Either that scale was the worst, or it should've had a second try with a slower pour. Y'all should micro-weight test from a spoon or something, so you have a bit more control than trying to tap from the box.

What about scales that have facility to remember recipe amounts and allow to make different size amounts

    hello, Lisa Cooks Food,
great review. by far the very best. thankyou.
I am new to the kitchen and am finding out the hard way, the importance of measuring.
between the escali and the ozeri, which would you recommend for home use? (pizza doughs, cookies, cakes, dinner, etc.. )
    thanks,
    rick

Hi Rick, between those two the Escali scored higher in our tests overall. The measuring platform is a bit small though, so before ordering make sure the bottom of your bowls will fit.

Thanks this was fairly helpful. Unfortunately I was considering the 5lb OXO so not sure this information is applicable.

I'm very late to the game here, 2 years late. 😂 But how do these work in reverse? Does anyone do the reverse tare? Which one is best for reverse?
That OXO scale went up in price. Of course! 😒 It's been two years. Inflation! I hate it with the "fire of a million suns!" 😂 it's now close to $56 on Amazon.
