+marshancars I read on a site called 'Big Races' and this renewal was a classic featuring some classy runners. In the 1990 renewal, there was a horse called 'Outside Edge'. I am guessing being filmed in the Midlands either Edgbaston in the Birmingham area or Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
This performance by Carvill`s Hill, Captain Christy in the 1975 King George VI Chase, Crisp 1973 Grand National, and Flying Bolt under 12st 7lbs in the 1965 Massey Ferguson Gold Cup are the most remarkable i`ve seen down the years in National Hunt Racing.
One that gets forgotten is Dessie's win in the Racing Post Chase. G1 placed runner up (rec. 28lb beat 8l) & next years National Winner (rec. 34lb beat 16l) was as good as any especially at that quick course.
It's the tops for me as the others were before my time the King George doesn't count as it's not a handicap.Crisp though if i can go back in time must be the all time weight carrying performance over those (at the time) monster fences such a pity he didn't win and i didn't see it as it happened instead knowing the result of probably the most agonising defeat in history.

Not just once...12-7 in every Handicap!!!.even the king George was a handicap in Arkles day....he gave lumps of weight in that as well!!! To not mention him!!!! Tut. Tut...He would have destroyed carvills hill on levels, and beaten him soundly in a handicap. Gallagher gold cup 1965 Greatest ever performance by a steeplechaser!
@@paulclark4616 But nupsala destroyed dessie at kempton, at levels....when dessie was in his prime... destroyed him!!! was it 15 length?…. Arkle would have given him 2 stone and a sound beating.

Carvills Hill was a great horse & always had a huge reputation. This performance proved how good he could be on his day. I was at Cheltenham in 1992 when he started a short priced favourite for the Gold Cup. There have been conspiracy theories regarding Jenny Pitmans plan to spoil the race by taking on Carvills Hill with her horse Golden Freeze, but the bottom line is that it was not illegal, it was just a tactic & I reckon it played a big part in Carvills Hill defeat. Although Cool Ground won it, he really wasn't in the same league as Carvills.
@@moyajanko6642 Your right, it was also in Peter Scudamore's book that Golden Freeze jockey apologized on the first circuit of the Gold Cup. Golden Freeze was never going to stay the trip and sadly Carvills Hill never raced again. Any respect for Jenny Pitman left me that day.
Whilst I think the tactics employed by JP in the Gold Cup were certainly underhand, I don't think it contributed to his bad jumping. If you look through his races he made mistakes in all sorts of positions. Be it in front or behind.. He also threw in great leaps amongst horses... If anything he might possibly have jumped worse on his own overall.. But she took all the flak because of her clear intentions and ultimately how badly Carvills Hill jumped in the GC. It's whenever he got in too close he couldn't make the adjustment to shorten up be it in front or behind horses IMO.
@@raborian Agreed he wasn't a natural over a fence, largely due to a persistent back problem, however if he's going to make a mistake let it be on his own terms. Can you imagine the uproar from JP if she trained Carvill's!!
Pitman put Golden freeze out a 2 miler who stuck with Cavills Hill. By the time Golden Freeze pulled up Carvill was knackered. She did it to get her other horse to win great tactics but the other one didn't btw.

This Welsh National win earned Carvill's Hill a 187 - I remember thinking that the sky's the limit now... Personally, I think the tactics used against him in the Gold Cup were harsh but fair. The big mistake was moving him from Jim Dreaper in the first place.
Moving to Pipe a mistake?? What rubbish he came from Dreaper with the all problems that he had years to sort out Pipe got basically a second hand horse and this performance under Pipe was light years ahead of what Dreaper acheived and he won another Hennessy Gold Cup as well.

Jim Dreaper knew this, he also knew how to handle a GC winner(How many GCs are on the Pipe CV) .He did it before this, and was well and truly vindicated in his handling of the horse.
