I bought used H6 for half of their price (minus the plastic Case but I got SGH-6 instead of MSH-6) and I really love it. I use H6 for recording ambiences, as interfaces, and a lot. They have an issue in Overdub but it doesn't matter for me since I don't use it so much. What an amazing thing of this device : Battery Life, it's just so Incredible that this device can hold up until about 20 hours of use. I use it almost 2 weeks and never change the battery. Anyway, amazing review sir!

Thank you for this! I watched your H6 review and the comparison between this and the H5 a few weeks back when i was deciding to buy either the H5 or the H6 for a "no budget" short film project and i decided on the H6, but the old one is basically no longer exist in my country so i purchased the all black edition a few days ago. I don't need the other mic capsule but a carrying protective case of some sort is definitely needed (like the plastic case that came with the H5) and a third party option cost too much, especially on a budget while also trying to get other equipment. After a few days of searching, i found this semi hard case called Telesin hard case that was originally intended for action cam carrying case but the length is perfect for the H6. It's a bit too wide but you get this adjustable compartment splitter so you can modify it to tightly fit the H6. If any of you reading this deciding to get the H6 black, i highly recommend this one and it only cost around $15 (you can get it cheaper if you look around). I did found another case that better fit the H6 from aliexpress with cheaper price but shipping takes way too long and i needed the case immediately.
    Thank you!

Nice review. I was thinking of upping my game soon from my Zoom H1n to an H5 or H6, but I'll probably hold off and get the upcoming Tascam Porta Capture X8 instead. Looks really nice and according to reviews it's got much quieter pre-amps than the Zoom handhelds. I must admit though, I do love the microphone add-on range for the Zooms. Very versatile and compact for the casual/hobby recordist like myself, who doesn't really want to haul around huge bags of kit.

This is a fantastic video in every way! I currently have a very old H6. It’s been my workhorse since the H6 first came out. It’s been dropped many times and has been taped back together. It still works. Question for you - do you think the H8 has a lower noise floor? Does it seem to have any more gain than the H6? I’m torn between buying a new h6 or an h8. Again, very good work on this video and thank you!

Hello Christian, thank you very much for that helpful and comprehensive review !
I just received a PCM D100 for field recording, haven’t tested it in really quiet location yet, but I have some marks on the cd screen, more visible when the recorder is off, those marks inside the screen are at the bottom, and really visible on daylight… It looks like an lcd failure, but only visible from a certain angle…
When I switch the recorder on, they are barely visible…like they disappear, only visible when the screen is off…

The Dealbreakers for me trying the H6:
    1. XLR line input volume resetting itself to zero occasionally when powering it back on
    2. Lack of XLR push-locks to secure cables from slipping out especially if using phantom power
    3. Ridiculously loose volume dials - constantly having to check they haven't been knocked

Thanks - really helpful, detailed video. I have one question, from ignorance. I'll be recording singing voice with an external mic (Røde NT1) into an XLR input on the H6, then uploading the wav file onto my iMac at home. Is there anything to be gained (in terms of quality of recording) from using an audio interface e.g. FocusRite Scarlett between the mic and the H6? I mean in terms of adding good pre-amps to the chain? I've seen one video review that used this as a set-up: mic to Scarlett to H6.

I've been told something like the Audio-Technica AT875R would be good, but I really don't want to have a rig setup with both the H6 AND an external mic if one of the capsules will do a decent job. Excellent review. A work around for no phantom power to the EXH-6 XLR connections is to use portable battery powered phantom power devices. Rolls makes them. Zoom did their homework on the H6. WiFi would be a great addition for viewing the display on an iPad or iPhone. Even if it didn’t allow remote adjustments, it would be a great way to monitor the levels. If GoPro can do it, why can’t Zoom?

Nice video, and I appreciate that you speak positively of the H6 when in many circles it is considered obsolete and noisy. I have used an H6 for 2 years, having had Tascam recorders prior, and I like the H6. The SSH-6 stereo shotgun is a favorite capsule of mine in church work, but I'd like to point out that your assertion about reflections isn't exactly right. Shotgun mics rely on their interference tube (the physical shaft) to cancel reflections, but this can be frequency specific. Shotguns are susceptible to some reflection interference from the sides (though they're good at canceling most of it) and from the rear (since hypercardioids have a tail of sensitivity). So, shotguns aren't very good in reverberant spaces that have lots of hard surfaces and untreated reflection hotspots. You can get away with them inside rooms with lots of soft surfaces to absorb sound -- and this includes the bodies of the audience/participants/crew! So invite a lot of self-ambulatory sound deadening (serving snacks can help, lol).

This is just the best review of the H6 since your last one. So thanks for it.
After months and months of research and now that I bought a camera to shoot videos (Fuji xt4), I'm seriously looking into audio because it's important to me. I know nothing about sound though.
My main goal is absolutely not ASMR, but I would like to record voice overs and clean and crisp cooking sounds and maybe outdoors in the future.
Do you you think the Zoom h6 + the shotgun would be a good match or/and should I pair it with something like the Rode NTG for more versatility with my camera instead of the Zoom shotgun?
Also, out of curiosity, is it possible in any way to record stereo cooking sounds i.e frying food going left and right in the pan or is this done post?
Thanks a lot if you can answer.

    • @christianskyes
      @christianskyes Před 2 lety +1

Thanks, I'm glad you like it :) The answer does depend on how you want to shoot.
If you want a stereo image of the cooking sounds, you could just get a Zoom H4n Pro, and place it on a stand in front of the pan, or above it. When recording with the built-in X/Y mic, you'll get a stereo image of the sound.
So if you tap the pan on the left, you'll hear that sound coming from the left.
If you do this, remember to press record on both the Zoom, and the camera, and then do a few claps, or snap your fingers a few times. You can then use that sound to sync the sound from the camera, to that of the Zoom.
Does this make sense so far?
Mounting the recorder on the camera can cause issues, such as handling noise making it into the recording. Plus, if you're using the built-in mics on the recorder, you're likely to hear some of the camera operator's breathing.
If a stereo image of the cooking is a must, a shotgun mic won't help, as it records in mono, and that's better for dialogue, sound effects, etc.
If you want to do the cooking recordings now, and the interviews later, probably get the H5 or H6. Use the X/Y capsule that comes with it for the stereo recordings, and then if you want to do interviews later, you can either get the SGH-6 capsule, or an external mic. I've used the Rode NTG-2 on quite a few occasions over the years, and I quite like it.
I hope this helps clarify things? :)

    • @REMY.C.
      @REMY.C. Před 2 lety

@@christianskyes thanks a lot Chris for this answer, it's clearer now.
The stereo isn't a must. I'm just imagining what I'd like to see/hear so it's still a concept in my head :-) I'm sure I'm wrong about what can or cannot be done and your answer is making it simpler.
I want to film myself cooking and integrating other things in videos (still a concept I'm working on) so I'll be the only operator in front and back of the camera and for the voice overs.
I'm still studying the possibilities and the more I think about it the more the stereo recording of the food becomes hard/impossible because as I understand from your answer, the XY capsule need to be close to the sound source to better capture the stereo image, which means it's gonna be in frame. So the shotgun makes more sense unless I shoot a first time, then record sounds independently which would make the process harder and far from the "just do it".
Also, I really appreciate your voice in every video. Just discovered your meditation channel. Are you planning on doing a video on how to get such a good recording and how to do the post treatment to have an even better sounding voice (without being fake of course)?

    WARNING TO MUSICIANS:
I purchased the Zoom H6, thinking that it was capable of doing multi-track recording using only the X/Y capsules (AKA overdubbing), much like the H5 (and, I presume, the H4N Pro).
In truth, for the H6, you are forced to record overdubbing tracks on a new channel every single time. Which means you need to bring an external microphone/XLR cable to overdub, in addition to the H6.
As a musician seeking a method to record overdubbed tracks on-the-go, this reduces the portability drastically.
It's an extra shame, since overdubbing using only the X/Y capsule on the H5 is possible (though finicky), I expected the H6 to be capable of the same, but this isn't true.

Is the voice in this video hypnotising me to buy a Zoom H6?

      @@christianskyes I did buy one 😊
      It arrived today.
Can you help me quit vaping?? 🧐🤔

      @@JamesBermingham Sure. *hypnotic music starts*
In a deep voice: James, you must cease vaping. Chew gum instead.
As it happens, I have affiliate links for gum down in the description 😂
      PS: Enjoy the H6

CapShuul? What the hell is that?! All humor aside, will the H6 do voice activated recording? I'd love to know. Thank you.

To my knowledge it does not, but you could always use the remote?
I tried saying it in the US pronunciation just now, CapSuhl, and it sounds do weird 😂

I was interested in the info, but your whispering voice makes it unbearable to hear (and understand) the whole thing.
