    Thx for the excellent video. Most importantly, thx for emphasizing the importance of stepping back. Many players insist, almost cult-like, that stepping back from the NVZ line is bad strategy. Every situation demands different court positioning to create more advantage for success.

    Great point about how cutting the ball (into the kitchen), to restart the point is NOT intuitive. What a master skill it is to have; to relieve yourself of the pressure to not do too much, and be okay with a beautiful slice into the kitchen off of their good shot.

  • @georgebanker2669
    @georgebanker2669 Před 8 měsíci +13

    Another quick tip for those balls that just dribble over. Instead of going straight ahead dink going cross court. That gives your ball time and space to climb and get over the net, which you wouldn’t have if you tried to dink straight ahead.

    a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Corner to corner is roughly 24.5 feet. Not trying to be a smartass, just want to give the right distance. Good video! Thanks!

    Hey Austin, Great video, all of your content is excellent!
    I have not yet seen a pickleball video about what to do with our non-paddle hand/arm. It clearly plays a role in our form, balance, follow-through, "sighting" the ball, grip switching and paddle angle. Would you enlighten us as to what the pros do with their non-paddle hand/arm? Cheers

    • @pickleballplaybook

      Watch videos 1 through 4 in my how to dink series. This covers what to do with the non dominant arm when dinking.
      I will definitely touch on this more in future videos! Thanks for the awesome feedback Robert!

    For recreational play, I am typically there at least 3 hours. Last night I hit against the wall and practiced serves for about an hour, and then we played doubles and cutthroat from seven until 10 PM when the lights went out. So, yea, 2 hours, minimum is about right.

    When would you ever dink down the line if it’s not a defensive dink? (And even then you would want that more middle to reset)

    • @pickleballplaybook
      @pickleballplaybook  Před 7 měsíci

      Dinking down the line is very valuable. Whenever you can clearly see your opponents and are not in a defensive situation, it’s a good change up.
      I recommend exclusively dinking cross court for certain rec sessions, and then others where you are not. This helps build good habits. Hope that helps!

    If you could use a ball machine to feed you four different shots in height and pace it would make it easier to explain and demonstrate when to attack and when to reset. For more advanced students, you could do a separate video of the same four shot responses and add big spin to shape shots. Keep it up and dumb it down to simple and demonstrate well and your channel will explode.
    I make sure my students know the why of every decision and they are more apt to put what they learn to good use.

  • @Raymundo619
    @Raymundo619 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Great video. I’d love one on how to defend speed ups (my blocks tend to fall into the net) and how to choose when to attack. Sometimes I’ll get a high bounce in the mid court and drive it, hoping to force a pop up. But I’ve seen John Cincola recommend not doing that in favor of just getting to the kitchen. What do you think?

  • @luke9822
    @luke9822 Před 4 měsíci

    11:03 it would be awesome to see specific drills, either with a partner or a machine like the Erne or Titan, that will help develop this decision making at the net. There are a few things to consider here and it's hard to remember all of them in a game. Developing muscle memory for the few different shots you get on this common error would be great. If any of your drills are for this exact scenario, point to which ones they are. I downloaded the Android app but have not used it yet.

    Just watched a pro match between ALW/Parenteau vs the Kawamoto twins. My question is: why do some pros purposely dink to the middle? I watched this video twice and understand everything you've said, but what is their specific strategy when they are dinking to the middle? is it to decrease their opponents angles? hope for a popup?

  • @joshc.6706
    @joshc.6706 Před 6 měsíci +1

    I’m trying to get as good as possible. While I’ve gotten from complete newbie to 3.5 in about 6 weeks at times at the kitchen I find myself lost with positioning in dink battles so I’m getting annihilated by 4.0+. Also great tip on net cords. I did it in tennis because the court was so much longer but never attempted in pickleball in that situation. Also if you see this would it be beneficial if there’s any attempt of a lob to go over the backhand shoulder, or is too difficult of a shot typically that it’s not practical?

    • @pickleballplaybook
      @pickleballplaybook  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes definitely love over the backhand shoulder majority of the time! Very difficult for the vast majority of players to do anything offensive with it, even if it is slightly low!

      Notice how in this video I instruct you to hover over the kitchen line to apply pressure but I also instruct you to take a step back. What it comes down to is the “when”.
      We step off the line when we slightly pop the ball up, and we hover over the line during every other circumstance.
      When you need more time to react, take a step back, reset into the kitchen, then hover over the line again.
      Hope that helps!
